The summary should include a clear statement capturing the central premise of the book, as well as additional points and concepts developed across the various chapters that you think best capture the gist of the book. Discuss one story or concept or chapter that you found particularly striking or meaningful. Summarize it (the story/concept/chapter) and explain why it resonated with you. What is your or your family’s attitude toward aging and mortality? How are they discussed? What does ‘good death’ mean to you or to your loved ones? And what do you fear most about the end of life? The questions of this last part should be viewed as just a general guide for you to think about how you view mortality and dying and what feelings, preferences, or assumptions you have about the end of life. Finally integrate this personal reflection with the ideas developed by Gawande. Some discomfort may be expected when we ponder our mortality but you should absolutely not feel forced to do it or experience any real distress. If for whatever reason you are unable or unwilling to think and/or talk with your loved ones about mortality, please let me know – we will figure out an alternative assignment specification for you.
