In the first of today¡¯s semifinals, Rafael Nadal will look to return to the Australian Open final for the first

time since 2019 when he plays Matteo Berrettini, with the Italian bidding to reach his 2nd Grand Slam

final and his first at the Australian Open. Nadal is now just 2 victories away from claiming sole ownership

of the all-time record for most Grand Slam men¡¯s singles titles ¨C but he was forced to dig deep to overcome

Denis Shapovalov in the quarterfinals, recording his first victory in a 5-set match here since defeating

Grigor Dimitrov in 5 sets in the 2017 semifinals. Very much the veteran among the 4 semifinalists here,

Nadal will become the 4th-oldest man in the Open Era to reach the final here if he wins today and will

become just the 5th man aged 35 or older to reach a Grand Slam final in the Open Era. Berrettini, who

also survived a 5-set quarterfinal match after resisting a fightback from Gael Monfils, will need to record

his first Grand Slam victory against a Top 10 player on his 7th attempt if he is to advance this afternoon.

?

The 2nd semifinal is a repeat of a last 4 clash from last year, with Daniil Medvedev up against Stefanos

Tsitsipas ¨C and Medvedev will hope for a similar outcome this time round, having beaten Tsitsipas in

straight sets at this stage here in 2021. Medvedev came perilously close to exiting in the quarterfinals on

Wednesday, recovering from 0-2 down and saving a match point to defeat Felix Auger-Aliassime in 5

sets. He will become just the 5th active male player to reach multiple Australian Open finals if he wins

again today ¨C after Novak Djokovic, Roger Federer, Nadal and Andy Murray. Tsitsipas, meanwhile,

enjoyed a comfortable victory over Jannik Sinner in the quarterfinals and will hope that triumph can propel

him to his first win in an Australian Open semifinal. He has lost in straight sets on both of his previous

appearances in the last 4 here.

?

The Australian Open men¡¯s singles semifinals are being played on the same day for the first time since

1999. Between 2000 and 2021, the men¡¯s semifinals were split across 2 days, with the first semifinal

being played on Thursday evening and the 2nd semifinal taking place on Friday evening.

By reaching his 2nd Australian Open semifinal, Medvedev has become the 3rd Russian man to reach the

semifinals here on multiple occasions ¨C after Kafelnikov (who reached the semifinals here in 1999-2000)

and Safin (2004-05).

?

By reaching his 5th Grand Slam semifinal, Medvedev has claimed sole ownership of 3rd place on the Open

Era list for most Grand Slam semifinals reached by a Russian man, ahead of Nikolay Davydenko. Safin

(7 Grand Slam semifinal appearances) and Kafelnikov (6) are the only Russian men in the Open Era to have

reached the semifinals at a Grand Slam more often than Medvedev.

?

Last year here, Medvedev reached his first Australian Open final, where he fell to Novak Djokovic in straight

sets. It was his 2nd appearance in a Grand Slam final, having also reached the final at the 2019 US Open

(l. Rafael Nadal). He became the first Russian man to contest the Australian Open final since Safin won the

title here in 2005.

?

Medvedev won his first Grand Slam title at the US Open last year, defeating Djokovic in straight sets. He

became the 3rd Russian man in history to win a Grand Slam title ¨C after Kafelnikov (who won the titles at

1996 Roland Garros and 1999 Australian Open) and Safin (2000 US Open, 2005 Australian Open).

?

Elsewhere at the Grand Slams in 2021, Medvedev reached the quarterfinals at Roland Garros

(l. Tsitsipas) and the round of 16 at Wimbledon (l. Hubert Hurkacz) ¨C his best performance at both events.

?

Medvedev¡¯s other 2021 highlights were winning the titles at Marseille (d. Pierre-Hugues Herbert), Mallorca

and the ATP Finals (l. Alexander Zverev), reached the semifinals at Cincinnati-1000 (l. Andrey Rublev) and

the quarterfinals at Miami-1000 (l. Roberto Bautista Agut) and the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Tennis Event (l. Pablo

Carreno Busta).

?

Medvedev topped the list for most Tour-level match-wins in 2021 with a 63-13 win-loss record for the

season ¨C ahead of Zverev (59-15) and Casper Ruud (57-17).

?

Prior to the Australian Open, Medvedev represented Russia at the ATP Cup, winning 3 of the 4 singles

matches he contested as the team reached the semifinals before falling to Canada. He fell to France¡¯s Ugo

Humbert in his opening singles match of the event, before recording victories against Australia¡¯s Alex de

Minaur, Italy¡¯s Matteo Berrettini and Canada¡¯s Felix Auger-Aliassime.

?

Medvedev¡¯s 5-set victory against Auger-Aliassime in the quarterfinals improved his win-loss record in 5-set

matches at the Australian Open to 2-1. It was also his 2nd successful comeback from 0-2 down, having

recovered from 0-2 down to defeat Marin Cilic in the 3rd round at Wimbledon last year. He has a 3-7 win-loss

record in 5-set matches at Tour-level overall.

?

If he wins the title here after saving a match point in his quarterfinal victory against Auger-Aliassime,

Medvedev will become the first man to win the Australian Open after saving a match point since Safin in

2005. Safin saved a match point in his semifinal victory against Roger Federer before defeating Lleyton Hewitt

in the final.

?

Medvedev reached a career-high ranking of No. 2 in March last year and plays here at the same ranking. He

is guaranteed to remain at No. 2 when the new rankings are published on Monday, regardless of the results
