Instructional Class for Students with Autism

Language Arts

Students will be given direct instruction using a functional academic curriculum. Students will be taught how to read and use functional sight words related to real life and vocational situations.

Students will be taught 5-10 functional vocabulary words per week. Students will be evaluated individually and daily, on their ability to identify and use the words effectively. Students will complete daily activities related to the words. A new set of words will be introduced each week.

Math

Students will be given direct instruction related to functional math skills. Students will be given opportunities to practice using calculators to solve functional math problems. Some topics that will be covered are: Banking and Credit Loans, Menu and Food Math, Creating a Budget, Maintaining a Checking Account. Letters will be sent home at the start of each new unit.

Social Studies/Civics

Students will be taught about current event topics and how the topics relate to and impact their daily lives. Social Studies will be taught in a cross curricular model in which the students will complete math, reading and science activities related to the topic on their current level of functioning. The News 2 You curriculum will be used.

Transition Rotations

Students will rotate every six to eight weeks into six different Vocational Rotations. The classes include: Apartment and Daily Living, Office Work and Mail Handling, Hospitality, Cottage Industries and Horticulture, Building Maintenance, Professional Portfolio Development. Students will have the opportunity to learn and practice functional and vocational activities.

Ms. Molly’s Rotation: Apartment and Daily Living

Students will be taught skills needed to live as independently as possible. Topics to be taught include: different types of apartments (studio, standard, duplex), how to budget and pay for apartment housing, how to find an apartment, vocabulary related to apartment living, self-advocacy and skills needed to live independently. Students will learn through direct instruction, modeling, role playing and group discussion and projects. Students will have the opportunity to use the apartment lab located in Room 105 to practice skills they are taught. All activities will be modified to each student’s individual current level of functioning.

Students will also be taught social skills lessons in which they will learn and practice social and communication skills needed to establish and maintain friendships, communicate effectively in school, the community and the work place and learn and practice self-advocacy.

Students will be taught on their current level of functioning with modifications, accommodations and support as appropriate. Students will participate in general education classes as appropriate and in accordance with their Individual Education Plans. Students will have opportunities to participate in extracurricular activities.
