General Statement: Under close supervision of the Research Data Supervisor (RD Sup) II, the Student Assistant (Engineering and Architectural Sciences) [SA (E&A)] performs computerized drafting, printing, laminating, and binding duties necessary for the development of examination materials for 46 of the CSLB’s 47 licensing examinations. Duties include, but are not limited to, the following:

A. Specific Assignments [Essential (E) / Marginal (M) Functions]:

50% Computerized Drafting (E)

Create and revise blueprint and drawing files using AutoCAD, Adobe Photoshop and related software. Define and document standards for assigning properties to, placing, and organizing AutoCAD objects within drawing files. Prepare draft booklets for workshops. (40%)

Scan information from books and other source materials as necessary to complete projects. Insert information from Internet sources as appropriate. (5%)

Maintain electronic and paper files of examination materials in accordance with security guidelines. (5%)

25% Booklet Preparation (E)

Print, collate, and laminate booklet pages and covers. Assign unique identification numbers to booklet covers for tracking purposes. Punch booklet pages with binding machine and insert binding coils. (15%)

Prepare Booklet Distribution Form indicating booklet numbers sent to each test center. Package booklets and Booklet Distribution Forms for overnight mailing to test centers. Receive outdated/damaged booklets from test centers and destroy booklets in accordance with security guidelines. Ensure records of sent, received, and destroyed booklets are provided to Testing personnel for inventory control. (10%)

15% Quality Control Review (E)

Verify the accuracy of AutoCAD drawings produced for each examination by working closely with Exam Specialists assigned to each examination. Attend examination development workshops with Subject Matter Experts when necessary, to clarify information required for drawings. Research symbols and/or other information on the Internet to ensure the accuracy of drawings.

10% Special Projects (M)

Complete special projects as directed by the Examination Development Unit supervisor. Projects may include drawings related to expansion of test centers, graphic materials provided to Subject Matter Experts (e.g., maps of hotels and restaurants), Internet research related to construction, special laminating, binding, addressing, folding, and inserting projects, and preparation of banners using plotting equipment.

The SA (E&A) is directly supervised by the Examination Development Unit supervisor, a RDS II.

E. Personal Contacts

The SA (E&A) works cooperatively with Exam Specialists and with contractors serving as Subject Matter Experts. The Student Assistant communicates with test center staff at the CSLB test centers by phone and/or email.

F. Actions and Consequences

This position requires confidentiality and discretion due to the confidential nature of the examination materials. Incumbent will be required to sign a Security Agreement. Security breaches of confidential information could result in immediate termination. Security breaches can cause significant costs for the CSLB.

G. Functional Requirements

No specific physical requirements are present: the incumbent works flexible hours (10-20 hours per week) in an office setting, with artificial light and temperature control. Incumbent may work up to 30 hours per week during the summer if the workload requires it. The incumbent can work no more than 1,500 hours in a calendar year. Daily access to and use of a personal computer is essential. Movement is consistent with office work and requires the incumbent to frequently remain in a stationary position and move about inside the office.

H. Other Information

Incumbent must possess good communication skills, work independently, manage time and resources effectively, and be responsive to CSLB management needs. Incumbent must learn to use laminating, binding, and addressing equipment. Incumbent must provide proof of application for or enrollment in a college curriculum preparing for upper division status in an engineering curriculum leading to a bachelor's or advanced degree.
