Physical Activity

Two years of a physical activity are required between 6th and 8th grade. All 6th graders will participate in IMS Pre-Athletics. Strength and conditioning will be emphasized along with the Physical Education TEKS.

Pre-Athletics and Physical Education - This course is an opportunity for students to learn the basic fundamentals and skills necessary to help them be successful and ready to compete in 7th grade athletics. After school practices and competitions are not a part of this program. Students will follow the traditional sport seasons; football, volleyball, basketball, and track.

Each student is required to dress out! The athletic department will notify parents of the dress requirements during the first week of school.

Electives - choose one One year of fine arts is required between 6th and 8th grade.

Art - Students will study master artists and their works, understand cultural and historical backgrounds from which to view art, and explore the varieties of media used in art. Possible projects include: pencil drawing, watercolor, tempera, acrylics, markers mixed media.

Beginning Band - Students will learn to read music, count rhythms, and play a musical instrument. Students will perform in several formal and informal concerts. Instruction is offered on flute, clarinet, alto saxophone, French horn, trumpet, trombone, baritone, tuba and percussion. Students will be assigned an instrument based through a tryout process with the band instructor.

Theater Arts - Students will participate in group learning, voice and diction development, theatre games, pantomime, and a variety of performances. They learn the difference between live theatre and film, study story dramatization characteristics and understand the importance of the player-audience relationship.

S.T.E.M. Lab - Students in this course will explore the connections between science, engineering, and math. Students will learn critical and logic skills related to robotics and coding as well as complete hands on projects.

Pathways All students will take a pathways course during 8th period. Through this course students will meet their other curriculum requirements in career exploration and health studies. Students will also receive academic tutoring and interventions, participate in Academic UIL, and find passions through school clubs and organizations.

AVID Students will develop and reinforce attitudes skills, and knowledge to successfully enter and complete a college prep academic program in high school. Students will learn and apply study skills and learning strategies to improve performance in the content areas: Note taking, outlining, writing, speaking, reading, test strategies and the use of technology to improve performance will be stressed.

Honors Courses These advanced courses are available in ELAR and Math. These are rigorous courses designed to build confidence, develop grit, and are aligned with dual course opportunities for their PTECH pathway. Sixth grade math curriculum with include 7th grade math standards.

Qualifications Placement in honors courses is based on previous years STAAR scores, teacher recommendations, and grades for each subject area. Please see the counselor for more information.

8th grade TEKS are required to be completed before Algebra 1. Students in Honors 7th grade math may complete these during Pathways or a summer bridge may be required.

One year of fine arts is required between 6th and 8th grade. It is recommended that this requirement be completed in 6th or 7th grade. 8th grade students are highly encouraged to take a high school credit course towards their PTECH Pathway in high school.

Marching Band? Students in this course will begin learning the basics of marching and will be re-

quired to participate in UIL competitions and performances. This course is combined with high school marching band. Students must meet UIL eligibility requirements for competitions and performances.

What is PTECH?

Ingram Tom Moore High School is a Pathways in Technology Early College High School. So what does this mean for an 8th grader? IMS 8th graders have greater opportunities to enroll in high school credit courses that align with a pathway of interest. These pathways connect students to college level courses, industry certifications and degrees before they leave high school. Students can graduate with their diploma and with the skills necessary for quality employment. Not all pathway options are list in this catalog. Please refer to the High School Programs of Study book on the ITM high school page for more details.

FOUNDATIONS OF CYBERSECURITY Grades: 8 Credit: 1.0 Prerequisites: none College Credit: No This course develops the knowledge and skills needed to master fundamental concepts of cybersecurity. Students in the course will develop a basic foundation for continuing their cybersecurity education and choosing a career in the cybersecurity field. Students will explore the challenges facing information security professionals related to ethics, system security, network security, and application security. Students will conduct risk assessments and develop and implement security policies to mitigate those risks. Students will examine trends in cyber- attacks, common vulnerabilities, and the emergence of cyber terrorism.

PRINCIPLES OF HEALTH SCIENCE Grades: 8-9 Credits: 1.0 Prerequisites: none College Credit: No This hands-on lab course is designed to provide an overview of the therapeutic, diagnostic, health informatics, support services, and biotechnology research and development systems of the health care industry. Students will learn to reason, think critically, make decisions, solve problems, and communicate effectively. Students should recognize that quality health care depends on the ability to work well with others. The student identifies the academic preparation, and skills necessary for employment as defined by the health science industry. Students will research a variety of professions in the healthcare industry and be able to identify academic requirements for professional advancement such as certification, licensure, registration, continuing education, and advanced degrees.

PRINCIPLES OF AGRICULTURE, FOOD, AND NATURAL RESOURCES Grades: 8-9 Credits: 1.0 Prerequisites: None College Credit: No Students will gain knowledge of the agriculture, food, and natural resource systems at the local, state, national, and international levels. Plant and animal systems, principles of food products and food processing systems are evaluated. Students will learn the variety of career and educational opportunities in the agriculture and natural resources systems. They will also expand on personal development, globalization, industry standards, details, practices, and expectations.

PRINCIPLES OF EDUCATION AND TRAINING Grades: 8-9 Credits: 1.0 Prerequisites: None College Credit: No Students will explore careers in the teaching and training program of study. They will be able to summarize the various roles and responsibilities of professionals in teaching careers as well as describe the personal characteristics, qualities and aptitudes necessary for a career in the field of education. Students will participate in job shadowing, interviewing, career interest inventory, researching in various job settings related to education such as; Pre-school, university, middle and high schools. Through group activities, students will also demonstrate and gain interpersonal skills, such as: communication, teamwork, decision-making, leadership, and conflict resolution needed for the education and training fields.

Students are required to have two years of a language other and English for high school graduation. Students may take the first level in 8th grade. SPANISH I Grades: 8-12 Credit: 1.0 Prerequisites: none College Credit: No This is a novice level beginning course for the introduction of the Spanish language. . Students in this course will develop novice-mid to novice-high proficiency in speaking, listening, reading, and writing on topics dealing with people, places, and events they are likely to encounter in everyday life. The cultural products, practices, and perspectives of the target culture(s) are integrated into all aspects of the course.
