Instructional Activities/Procedures:Opening the Lesson: Watch a short video on static electricity and positive and negative charges. Developing the Lesson: Two Part Experiments:Give each person a balloon to blow up and tie off. Give each person a handful of Rice Krispies and lay them on the tabletop.Hand out one piece of felt to each group. Have each person charge their balloon by rubbing the felt against it. Hover the balloon about an inch over the Rice Krispies and watch as the balloon picks them up. Part II of the Experiment:Now get two students to volunteer to come to the front with their balloons. Have each student tie a string to their balloon. Have the students use the felt to charge their balloons. Let the balloons hang from the strings and try to put them together and watch what happens. Closing the Lesson:Have the students discuss what they saw. What were the differences in part one and two of the experiment? Why did the balloons attract the Rice Krispies, but repel each other when both charged. Extending the Lesson:Have the children complete the worksheet on Static Electricity, positive and negative charges and bring homework back the next day. Assessment: Read the students journals to see if they noticed the differences in the charges from the balloons and understand static electricity.
