Babies go through several stages of language development.

Birth to Six Months:

• Infants whose parents talk to them more frequently will develop better language skills.

• Babies listen to words even though they cannot speak.

Six to Twelve Months:

• Babies begin to point to things and name them.

• This is a great time to read rhymes and sing songs.

• Babies love to “read” books about babies doing everyday things.

Twelve to Thirty-Six Months:

• Babies enjoy books where they can look for surprises, such as a lift up book like Dear Zoo.

• Babies’ attention spans are variable.

• The child demands story over and over again.

• They “read” to dolls or to self.

• They begin to “write”. (It looks like scribbling to others.)
