Six Ways To Find Your Latin Name

Throughout history, people have often had to have a Latin version of their name in order to communicate with people from other countries or with other Latin speakers in general. We will be using Latin names in class because it’s fun and because it will actually help you learn Latin faster—you’ll see how!

There are several ways to get or find out your Latin name:

1. You might already have one!

Lots of modern names are actually Latin or are Latin versions of other names. You can look up your name at a baby name site or ask the teacher to see if you already have a Latin name.

Examples: Sara (Latin version of Sarah), Alexa, Alissa, Anna (Latin version of Hannah), Lisa…

2. You can make your name sound Latin.

This is usually done by changing or adding some letters at the end of your name. In Latin, female names usually end in –a and male names usually end in –us, but they don’t have to. Sometimes changing a letter in the middle of the name can make it sound more Latin, too. Talk to the teacher if you want to tweak your name with a Latin ending.

Examples: Quentin → Quentinus; Celene → Celena; Monty → Montius/Montellus

3. Your name might already have one or more Latin versions.

One place to check is this site: (Note: “Christian name” on this site just means “first name.”) To find your own name, press Ctrl-F and type in your name. You may be presented with multiple options! You can also try your name in the Latin name generator on the left side of the page.

Examples: Emery → Emerica, Ameriga, Almarica; Nicolas → Nicolaus; Jasmine → Isamina

4. You can use the Latin name that means whatever your name means.

If you know what your name means, you can look it up in a Latin-English dictionary or ask the teacher how to say what it means in Latin.

Examples: Aimee (meaning loved) → Amata; Devin (meaning poet) → Poeta

5. You can pick a completely new Latin name!

Don’t like your name? Like your name so much that you don’t want to change it? You can pick a whole new name from a list of Latin names. You can find many Roman Latin names here:

Pick one that you like! (You can also pick a name you like from the website under point 3.)

6. You can also make your Latin name a Latin word that has a meaning you like.

Want to be called Thunder? That’s Tonitrus in Latin. Eagle? That’s Aquila. Little Oven? That’s Furnulus. Froggie? Ranula. Have fun with this one!
