Names serve several purposes. Most importantly they help distinguish us from one another. Imagine how difficult it would be if we did not use names. Instead of saying Bob, one would have to say something like the short, red-headed man who lives down the street. The story behind your name is what you need to explore for this assignment.

Purpose: To introduce yourself, practice your research skills, make connections with your family, and get to know other students you will be creating a writing assignment, a speech and a visual

Due Date: Speech Length: 2-3 minutes

Type 3: In a multi paragraph essay, please explain what you know about your name, any stories about how you were named, and how you feel about your name. Please use the essay writing techniques you have learned so far, including an introduction and a conclusion.

Essay and Speech Content: Listed below are items to consider when putting your essay and speech together. Once you have completed your research, decide which aspects are the most interesting. As you practice your speech, try to hit your target time of 2-3 minutes. If you are coming up short, could you explain something more thoroughly? Add in other information you found? If you are way over your time, what could you take out without hurting your speech?

• What are the literal meanings of your first, middle, and last names?

• What is the story of how you were first named?

• Is there anything common or unusual about your name?

• How do you feel about your name? (Do you like it? Does it stand out too much or not enough? Does it seem to fit you? Why or why not?)

• Do you have any nicknames? (How did you get it? Do you still have it? Do you like it?)

• Is there anything else associated with your name? (Famous person or place? Company name? Historical or Biblical references?)

Visual: You must also bring some sort of visual you INCORPORATE into your speech. Suggestions: photo of person you were named after, photo of famous person with your name, family crest, family tree, a collage of images that relate to your name in some way, something interesting that bears your name or surname, etc. See me if you are struggling with ideas or are not sure if your idea is acceptable.

ancestry, etc.
