Dear Staff,

Dear Staff,

I know that many of you are seeing students with pink eyes. The nurses are following guidelines for sending students home. They believe that many of the students have viral conjunctivitis which is harmless and mildly contagious and they can attend school. Viral conjunctivitis usually lasts four to seven days. Good hand washing is the key to keeping it contained. Viral conjunctivitis is treated by washing with soap and water and irrigating the eyes with warm water.

Bacterial conjunctivitis is contagious and needs medical treatment. These students are sent home until medically cleared. These students are treated with antibiotic eye drops or ointments. The child is not contagious after they have been on antibiotics for 24 hours. The yellow discharge should clear up after three days. The red eyes may persist for several more days.

Sincerely,
