Bible Point

God is always fair.

Bible Verse:

If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will

forgive us our sins and cleanse us from all

unrighteousness. I John 1:9

Bible Passage

Psalm 51:1-4 II Samuel 11, 12:1-23

Overview

God is just. He cannot do anything that is unfair. This can be both a comfort and a warning. We are comforted that we will always be treated fairly. However, it is a warning to those who think they can get away with sin. There are consequences for our

actions.

(Dr. Beaker enters the room in deep thought. Shakes his head, wrings his hands, and shakes his head again. Seeing everyone, he is startled.)

Oh, good morning. I am sorry. I am quite preoccupied today. Last night, I found my lab assistants, Erlenmeyer and Dynamo, having a party in the laboratory. I have been quite clear with them that parties are not allowed in the lab. Pop was spilled all over the floor. Cake crumbs were even in the Bunsen burners. I had no choice but to make them miss their day off of work to clean the lab. They are upset with me. They think that I am not being fair.

Speaking of being fair, my experiment today is on the characteristic "just".

Let me give you my best scientific PP definition of just.

Just means always being fair.

PP (Voice from lab says "Dr. Beaker, we are finished.")

Ok, I will come and inspect your work.

What Color Will You Get?

Supplies Red cabbage Water Pan Five clear drinking glasses Vinegar Baking soda Lemon juice Soda pop Alka-Seltzer?

Make cabbage juice by boiling 6-7 leaves of cabbage in water until the water turns bluish-purple.

In each drinking glass, place one of the following:

? cup vinegar, ? cup water mixed with 2 tablespoons baking soda, ? cup water mixed with ? cup lemon juice, ? cup clear soda pop, ? cup water with one tablet of Alka-Seltzer? dropped in the water.

I am going to pour this purplish-blue liquid into each of these clear glasses of liquid. Watch carefully to see what happens.

Pour the cabbage juice into each glass. Each glass will turn a different color.

You know, they made the mess. It is only fair that they had to come and clean up the mess! Actually they are just lucky I didn't fire them!

What happened? Each time we got a different color. Were you able to predict what color came next? Did you know what to expect next?

(Dr. Beaker exits)

Does God treat us like this? Do we know what to expect from Him? God will always be just. We do not have to wonder if He will love one person but not the next. We do not have to wonder

if He will let one person get away with sin but punish the next. That does not mean that we will always have the same thing happen to us as the next person. What it does mean is that we do not have to worry that God will be unfair.

consequence. Because God is just, he cannot allow us to "get away" with PP sinning. However, when we repent of our sin, telling God that we are sorry, He forgives our sin.

Our memory verse today says, "If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and cleanse us from all unrighteousness."

Put Out The Fire

Fill the film canister about 1/4 full of water. Place one of the pieces of the tablets in the film canister and push the cap of the canister down quickly. Place the canister on a flat surface and stand back.

Safety: Do not stand over the canister looking down at it! The top will pop off of it and it could hurt your eyes.

Rocket Launcher

Supplies: Plastic juice bottle (these come in packs of six with a twist off top) Modeling clay Two straws: One large and one small (the smaller one must fit into the larger one)

Light the candle. Pour two teaspoons of baking soda into the glass. Cover the baking soda with vinegar. As the baking soda and vinegar bubbles, lift the glass and "pour" the broken bubbles over the candle. Do not pour out the liquid solution. The candle should go out.

Jesus died on the cross for our sins. He wants to snuff out the sin in our lives. When we ask for forgiveness, Jesus forgives us, blowing out the sin from our lives.

Clean out the juice bottle. Put the larger straw into the opening of the bottle. Use the clay to seal any leaks between the straw and the hole in the bottle and to keep the straw in the bottle. Put a small amount of clay on one end of the smaller straw. Place the smaller straw inside the larger straw. Squeeze the bottle and the straw rocket should go flying.

Both rockets showed that every action produces a reaction. When we sin, there must be a reaction or

Psalm 51:1-4 II Samuel 11, 12:1-23

David and His Sin

God sifts us just like the filter. He has to filter out the sin in our lives. When we repent and ask for his forgiveness, He makes us clean, leaving the sin behind.

King David wrote this psalm after he had committed a terrible sin.

war with his army. However, for some reason, he stayed behind. While he was at home, he saw a woman that he thought was beautiful. King David decided to take this woman, named Bathsheba, as his girlfriend even

though the woman was already married to another man.

What did you notice when you held the magnet over the container of objects?

(Some things attached to the magnet and some did not.)

The container of objects is like our lives. The magnet represents Jesus. When we ask Jesus to forgive our sins, He pulls the sin out of our lives.

That was bad enough, but when Bathsheba's husband came home, King David wanted to hide what he had done. He tried everything he could to cover up his sin. When nothing seemed to work, he did a horrible thing. He sent the man, Uriah, back to battle. He placed him in a position where he knew that Uriah would be killed. And that is exactly what happened.

4

Week 6 God is Always Fair

After Uriah was killed, King David brought Bathsheba to his home and married her.

Now, God is a just God. He would not let David get by with this kind of behavior. So, God sent a prophet named Nathan to David.

Nathan told David a story. This is what Nathan told David:

"There were two men in a certain town, one rich and the other poor. The rich man had a very large number of sheep and cattle, but the poor man had nothing except one little ewe lamb he had bought. He raised it, and it grew up with him and his children. It shared his food, drank from his cup and even slept in his arms. It was like a daughter to him. Now a traveler came to the rich man, but the rich man refrained from taking one of his own sheep or cattle to prepare a meal for the traveler who had come to him. Instead, he took the ewe lamb that belonged to the poor man and prepared it for the one who had come to him."

David became very angry. He said that the man deserved to die for this and should repay the poor man four times over what he had taken.

Nathan looked at the king and said, "You are the man!" Then, he delivered the words of the Lord, "I anointed you king over Israel, and I delivered you from the hand of Saul. I gave you the house of Israel and Judah. And if all this had been too little, I would have given you even more. Why did you despise the word of the Lord by doing what is evil in his eyes? You struck down Uriah with the sword and took his wife to be your own."

David cried out in repentance, "I have sinned against the Lord."

God forgave him for what he did. However, David would have consequences for his actions.

God is just and will punish sin. But if we ask Him, He will forgive us. He will erase our sin. Often there will still be consequences, but, we are forgiven.

Prayer

Take some time to present the plan of salvation if you feel led to do so. Give the children an opportunity to ask forgiveness for their sins.

Modern Day Story

Corrie ten Boom

Supplies Picture of Corrie ten Boom (page 10)

During World War II, the leader of Germany, Adolph Hitler, had all the Jews put into concentration camps. These were terrible places where few people came out alive. People who helped the Jewish people were also put into these camps.

One of the families that decided to help the Jewish people by hiding them was the ten Boom family. This family had a watch shop in Holland. They were a Christian family and showed God's love to many people. However, one day the police found out what they were doing. They arrested Corrie ten Boom, her sister and her father. All of them were sent to a concentration camp where Corrie's sister and father died.
