Coach Watkins is no stranger to Yates Football. He played football, graduated from the School of Communications and began his coaching career at Yates.On May 13, 2016 Coach Watkins was named the 12th Head Football Coach at the historic Jack Yates High School. After missing the playoffs for the first time in 38 years, Coach Watkins was faced with the monumental task of reestablishing the PRIDE, rebuilding the EXCELLENCE and restoring the TRADITION!!! With only one teaching position available on campus, Coach Watkins was able to hire one assistant on campus and assemble the rest of the staff from around the district. With the last assistant being hired in August, they began the journey to get the Mighty Lions back into the state playoffs. With three months until the first game, the program adopted the motto “9 months’ worth of work in 90 days of preparation”. Seventeen returning seniors led the Mighty Lions as they worked tirelessly throughout the summer to gain the necessary edge to be competitive. As the 2016 season approached, many Texas High School publications had the Lions slated to win only three games and miss the playoffs for a second consecutive season. The Lions began the season with a loss to Furr but finished non district with a 2-2 record. With momentum, the Lions completed district play with a 5-1 record and playing for the district title. The Mighty Lions finished the season with a 7-4 record and returned to the state playoffs losing to the Bay City Black Cats.Prior to Coach Watkins arrival, he served as the offensive line coach at Cypress Ridge High School on Coach Gary Thiebaud staff in Cy Fair Independent School District. Coach Watkins mentored one of 17-6A and the states most feared rushing attacks. There, the offensive line paved the way for all state running back Trelon Smith to rush from more than 2000 yards and have 3 straight 300 yard rushing games while being name Houston Chronicle player of the week. Five offensive linemen received all district selections with fifteen receiving selections to the all-state all-academic team. During Coach Watkins first tenure at Yates in 2004 with Head Coach Ray Evans, he helped guide Yates to a quarter finals appearance in the Class 4A State Playoffs, its first since 1997, with a 10-3 record while winning a share of the district title. While guiding the offensive line, this unit had eight young men receive All District selections, four First Team selections and two Second Team selections, along with two Honorable Mentions. Three of those young men received scholarships to play collegiate football at Prairie View A&M, Texas Southern University and Air Force Academy. After a successful stint at Yates, Coach Watkins accepted the position as Assistant Head Coach/Offensive Coordinator at Jesse H. Jones High School under the direction of Coach Wayne Taylor. There, Coach Watkins helped lead Jones to its first playoff victory in 20 years. He coached the Gatorade and Old Spice Player of the Year, Remus Nembhard, who was the Houston area’s only 2,000 yard rusher. While at Jones, Coach Watkins mentored an offense that consisted of three Offensive Linemen receiving First Team All-District Selections, two Second Team selections, District 23-4A MVP, ranked first in offense yards per game and first in points per game. In 2006, Coach Watkins joined Coach Ron Holmes’ staff at Galveston Ball High School as the Strength & Conditioning and Offensive Line Coach. At Ball, Coach Watkins implemented a blocking scheme that would see an offense rank #1 in rushing, #2 in passing yards, #1 in total offense and #2 in points per game in District 23-5A. Coach Watkins developed a Strength & Conditioning program that established Galveston Ball as one of the strongest and most physical teams in the Region. Coach Watkins also chaired a committee that oversaw the design, development and construction of a new state of the art 5,000 sq. ft. Sports Complex for student athletes.?In 2008, when Ray Evans was named Athletic Coordinator/Head Football Coach at Eisenhower High School, Coach Watkins rejoined him. At Eisenhower, he was responsible for the Offensive Line and named Co-Offensive Coordinator. The high octane Eagle offense averaged more than 375 yards per game and 41.6 points per game.After Coach Evans retirement in 2010, Coach Watkins role was shifted and was named Special Teams Coordinator While at Eisenhower, 21 young men received college scholarships, two District MVP’s, two offensive player of the year awards, six First Team Offensive Linemen and three Second Team Offensive Linemen. Coach Watkins is married to his lovely wife Ashley Watkins, whom he met while attending Yates. She is also a proud alumnus of the historic Jack Yates High School.
