Aug 1790: succeeded the rector of Great Choptank Rev. Dr. Bowie whom he had served as an assistant.

1802: received a Doctor of Divinity degree from Columbia College.

1813: became an assistant rector of St. Paul's parish in Baltimore.

1814: elected assistant bishop to the Right Rev. Thomas J. Claggett of Maryland. His jurisdiction was the Eastern Shore (now the Diocesan of Easton) which included one-third of the parishes in the state.

1815: elected Provost of the University of Maryland.

2 Aug 1816: at death of Bishop Claggett he succeeded to the episcopate of Maryland.

28 Oct 1827: died as a result of an accident at New Castle, Delaware. Pm a return journey from Philadelphia, his coach overturned and he was so seriously injured internally that he died within three days.

Presbyterian. Became interested in the Protestant Episcopal church which was at this time orgainizaing its scattered parisheds into a more efficient national and dioscesan system.

28 July 1746: purchased 303 acres for16½¢ per acre. He named this tract "Schifferstadt" after his hometown.

Upon his land Joseph built a substantial stone house. The walls of the house were two and one-half feet thick with hand-hewn timbers of native oak, pinned together without nails or spikes. With its kick-up roof and center chimney, the building reflected the appearance of farm houses along the central Rhine River near Speyer and Mannheim in Germany. The house also had a large wine cellar. The house has been fully restored (at least one the outside) by the Maryland Historical Trust and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. One of finest features of the house which helped to warrant its restoration is its 1753 vintage square iron stove, still in its original position. It is also one of the oldest homes in Frederick, Maryland, located on Rosemont Avenue just of Route 15 (to Thurmont) from Routes 70 or 40 West.

An earlier name for this area was Falckner's Swamp German Settlement, which later included New Hanover, Pennsylvania. He relied upon the title obtained from the Indians, but ascertaining that a Mr. O’Neal had obtained a patent for about 1000A on the eastern part of his land, his eyes were opened to the necessity of obtaining a better title to his possession. On this date he applied for a patent and succeeded in obtaining in securing a patent for 930A, on a part of which his original settlement had been made.
