GOCCP Awards Crime Lab Grants to 7 Agencies

Funds Total $315,675 for Forensic Improvements

The Governor’s Office of Crime Control and Prevention (GOCCP) today announced awards totaling $315,675 to Maryland crime laboratories. The federal funds come to the state through the Paul Coverdell Forensic Science Improvement Grants (CFSI) Program.

Under federal guidelines, applicants were encouraged to assess all aspects of evidentiary forensic sample examination. This could include crime scene through laboratory analysis, identifying efficiencies that could be implemented with CFSI funds. The result of CFSI funding should demonstrate improvement over current operations in the quality and/or timeliness of forensic science or medical examiner services provided.

The grants are meant to help forensic laboratories enhance performance in the analysis of forensic science evidence involving firearms examination, latent prints, toxicology, controlled substances, forensic pathology, questioned documents and trace evidence. The funds can also help crime labs to achieve national accreditation and can be used to train, assist, and employ forensic laboratory personnel as needed.

“Maryland has reduced violent crime to its lowest rate since 1975, and this did not happen by chance,” says Governor Martin O’Malley. “It happened because of the work of our courageous police officers, their partners in local communities, and the use of sophisticated technology such as we are funding today. These grants demonstrate that Maryland is moving forward, and carrying out our most sacred duty as elected officials: protecting the public.”

“Our state and local law enforcement work around the clock to keep violent crime in check and our children and communities safe,” said Senator Barbara Mikulski, Chairwoman of the Senate Commerce, Justice and Science (CJS) Appropriations Subcommittee, which funds the Department of Justice. “I am committed to giving them the tools and technology they need to clean up the streets and protect our families. I’m pleased this funding will be used to reduce untested DNA evidence backlogs in Maryland’s crime labs, effectively solve and prosecute crimes, and make sure we put the right bad guys behind bars.”

“Thanks to the tireless work ethic of law enforcement officials and innovative forensic technology, we are better equipped than ever before to investigate violence crime,” said Senator Benjamin Cardin.  “These grants will further advance public safety and the swift administration of justice in Maryland.”

Applicants for these grants are limited to crime labs within local law enforcement agencies or Medical Examiners’ offices.
