Baltimore County Public Schools

Student Absences for Vacations

There are occasions when families have the opportunity to take vacation during the school year. At these times, keeping up with the schoolwork their children will miss is a concern for parents and teachers alike. While teachers plan in advance according to a long-range scope, planning for daily instruction is an ongoing process that requires frequent adjustment due to the assessment of student needs. Therefore, instruction and planning is often rearranged or revisited. In order to provide your child with the actual missed work due to a vacation, it is more effective to collect it on a daily basis as the instruction takes place within the classroom. Please keep in mind that there is a great deal of learning that takes place through discussion and other activities that cannot be made up in the form of a worksheet or textbook pages. While teachers may be able to give some make-up work prior to taking a family vacation, your child’s teacher will continue to collect the work he/she misses to give to the student upon his/her return to school.

Absent Notes

When students are absent from school, it is important that upon their return they bring an absent note informing their teacher of the date of their absence and the reason for the absence. When absence notes are not received, absences will be coded as unexcused.

 Be Prepared for School!

As the cooler weather approaches and there is a need to heat the school building, it’s important to know that Baltimore County Public Schools maintains room temperatures within the range of 68 to 70 degrees during the heating season. It is recommended that your child store a sweatshirt or sweater in his/her classroom to wear in the event he/she becomes cold. Please be sure to label the item with your child’s name, and listen to the weather report each morning so your child selects clothes to wear to school that match the weather. Please remember that students must have tennis shoes in order to participate in physical education class. Tennis shoes can be carried to school in a separate bag if needed, and students may keep a spare pair in the classroom.

BCPS ONE COMMUNICATION CENTER FOR PARENTS

As of Friday, November 4, 2016, when parents log into BCPS One, a Communication Center will appear in the upper right corner of the landing page. This new feature will be used as a tool to share BCPS One related announcements with parents. The picture below is a sample of how it looks on the page.

Music Notes

On Friday, November 18, 2016, our Kindergarten students will perform “All About Autumn”. The concert is a 10:30 in the cafeteria. The students have been working on songs and poems in music and library about Autumn. Please encourage students to wear fall colors. All students should wear tennis shoes since they will be performing on risers.

This year students in the First Grade will perform a “Winter Wonderland” medley for the annual community tree-lighting tradition here at Perry Hall Elementary on Tuesday, December 7, 2016 from 6:30-7:30. We are asking for first graders to dress up for the occasion. All are welcome.

News from the Administration

Dear Gator Families,

It’s hard to believe, but we are already in the second quarter of school. Report cards will be distributed on Thursday, November 10, 2016. Conferences will be held on Friday, November 11th. If you have not already scheduled a conference and desire to have one, please contact your child’s teacher. American Education Week is scheduled for November 14th-18th. We have arranged the following dates and times to visit our school:

Monday (11/14) Fifth Grade

Tuesday (11/15) First Grade & Fourth Grade

Wednesday (11/16) Second Grade

Thursday (11/17) Third Grade

Friday (11/18) Pre-K and Kindergarten

Our PTA invites you to the cafeteria for refreshments prior to the classroom visits, beginning at 9:30 and ending at 11:00.

We arrange the dates and times in order to maximize parking and monitor the number of visitors in the building. However, if the date and time for your child’s class is not conducive to your schedule, please call or email your child’s teacher to arrange a time that is agreeable to both you and the teacher.

All parents/grandparents/visitors who have not already been scanned into the RAPTOR system, and are planning to visit, must be scanned in by Friday, November 11th. All un-scanned visitors will not be able to enjoy their full amount of time in the visitations due to the amount of time it takes to scan your license for the first time. We will be organizing visitor’s badges based on who informs us of their planned visit during American Education Week.

PHES is thankful to have such a wonderful community that supports our students. We hope that you are able to spend time enjoying family and/or friends during the Thanksgiving holiday.

Sincerely,

Donna Bergin, Principal

Security at Perry Hall Elementary School

The safety of all students and staff in Baltimore County Public Schools is of utmost importance to all of us. Our school, as well as all Baltimore County schools, is utilizing a visitor check-in system. The system is called V-soft by Raptor, otherwise known as Raptor. The information collected will not be shared outside of the school and is stored on a secure server. Registration of all visitors is necessary so that in the event of an emergency in the school, a record of all people currently in the building will be available.

When you visit our school for the first time, you will be asked to present government issued photo identification (ID) or a driver’s license to a staff member in our main office. The ID will be scanned and your photo, name, and date of birth will be extracted. This information will be used to log you in and compare your information against the national sex offender database. Once your ID is scanned and you are cleared, a visitor pass will be printed for you. The visitor pass you receive must be worn on your outer garment. You will need only to show your ID on future visits. You will be asked to log out with office staff upon completion of your business so that we know you are no longer in the building.

If you refuse to have your ID scanned, you will be denied access to the school. The only alternative to this process is to allow staff to see your ID to verify your name and date of birth so that this information can be manually entered into the system. This method does not store information. Therefore, you must go through the process each time you visit the school. You must have a government issued ID or a driver’s license to be manually entered. Other forms of ID will not be accepted. If you are matched to the sex offender database, you will be denied access to the school. Only the principal can override this decision and identify conditions under which you may visit. Your assistance in keeping our students and staff safe is appreciated.

Our Passport Program: Spanish

¡Hola! ¡Saludos de la clase de español! The fourth and fifth grade students continue to make huge progress in learning Spanish. In fourth grade, the students have been practicing their conversation skills in Spanish by asking and answering various questions that they have learned with their classmates. Additionally, the students have started to learn about their family members in Spanish and how to describe themselves. With all the Spanish they have acquired, it is hard to believe they have only had nine classes this year!

In fifth grade, the students have been working on their first Spanish project. They are recording videos talking about themselves in Spanish and creating a website! It is so exciting to see how the students apply the Spanish vocabulary they learned in fourth grade and the skills they have acquired in their ELA class to writing in the language.

Are you looking to practice some Spanish at home? Ask your child to teach you what they learned in Spanish class each week! Also, here are some Spanish phrases you can practice at home during November.

|La frase en español |English sentence |

|¿Cómo estás? |How are you? |

|¡Estoy bien! |I’m good! |

|Estoy cansado/a. |I’m tired. |

|Más o menos. |I’m okay. |

|¡Feliz día de acción de gracias! |Happy Thanksgiving! |

¡Hasta luego!

Señorita Kaiser

Thank You

The PTA would like to thank all of our Gator families who participated in the 2nd Annual Trunk or Treat event on Friday, October 28th from 7pm-8pm! Fun was had by all who attended the event. The families that donated their time and efforts to decorating their trunks were creative. Whether the trunks were spooky or funny, the children enjoyed getting treats. This year there were over 40 trunks decorated! The administration, teachers, staff and parents appreciate all that the PTA does to create such an awesome event for our students! Thank you again! Here are just a few of the trunks:
