PRINCIPAL'S MESSAGE Thank you to our wonderful parents, students, and staff for helping us kick off a very successful first year at Honeygo Elementary School. This is my thirteenth year as a school principal in Baltimore County Public Schools and my twenty-seventh year in teaching, and I can truly say we have all of the right ingredients to be one of the very best schools in our county and state. It is not an exaggeration to say that I have never been prouder of students and teachers! As the parent of three children, school safety and improved student achievement are my two primary concerns. Each year we refine the practices and procedures that allow us to keep all of our children safe at school. We are committed to providing a secure and safe environment for our children at Honeygo Elementary School. We do recognize that this may mean that adults are slightly inconvenienced in order to increase the level of security and keep all of our children safe, but it is worth it. With over 600 students at our school, it is very important that everyone is aware of our safety procedures. If you were unable to attend our Back to School Nights, please take a few moments and review the PowerPoint presentation posted on our school website as it identifies new safety drills that will be in effect in all Baltimore County schools this year.

Some of the important procedures: ? In the event of an emergency at Honeygo Elementary School, and there would be a need to relocate away from our school site, we will use Soukup Arena on Joppa Road or Snyder Park. ? All Baltimore County Public Schools are using the Raptor system. Any adult wishing to enter the schoolhouse during the school day must present a valid government issued identification that will be scanned. All adults must enter the front door of the school and not use side doors or approach any classrooms without first coming to the office. ? Parent and teacher communication is vital to student success. Please contact the teacher to schedule a conference this school year. If you would like to see a teacher or your child during the school day, a school administrator will assist you. It is our intent to limit disruptions to the students' instructional program. ? We recognize that it may be disappointing, but we are not able to accommodate adult visitors for lunch in the cafeteria.

? If your child has an early dismissal for any reason, please send a note. Persons arriving to pick up a student for an early dismissal without a note, or school contact by phone with a parent the child resides with, will not be able to take the child. If the parents have joint custody arrangements or no custody paperwork on file, the school will release a child to either parent. We will attempt to contact the parent that the child resides with, but we will not withhold a child from their parent. In the event of a school emergency or illness of the child, any person listed by the parent on the emergency dismissal form will be permitted to sign out the child. All of our security measures allow us to ensure the safety of all of our students.

? Our bus drivers are terrific and work quickly to get to know our students. Please note that, bus drivers are not required to wait for an adult to meet students at the bus stop. Please make sure that your child knows who they are permitted to go home with at the end of each day.

? Effective communication with parents is vital to the work that we do at school. While email is a great vehicle for some questions, it is not the best way to communicate about behavior or academic concerns. We will communicate about behavior or academic issues either by phone or in person.

? To communicate effectively with parents about school-wide events, we will use the program, School Messenger. This program allows us to reach every family by telephone, or email in a matter of minutes. This will be used to keep you informed of important school events, report card distribution, and emergencies. If you have not received a phone message or email from school that was computer generated, please notify the school office so that we can check the phone numbers and emails that we are currently using.

BCPS ONE SYSTEM BCPS uses a computer system called BCPS One. This online resource allows you to check your children's grades and assignments in Grades 1-5 through Schoology, review curriculum, access educational resources, and link to school websites. Teachers are asked to provide students and parents feedback and/ or grades within the system at least every two weeks. In order to create an account please visit, . If you already have an account, you may need to login and add your child by selecting their school and inputting their birthday in order to gain Schoology. If you have any questions regarding creating an account, please contact Jessica Osipowicz at josipowicz@ for further assistance.

EARLY CLOSING INFORMATION From time to time, Baltimore County Public Schools will close early. If the early dismissal is countywide (all BCPS schools), you will be notified through the media. If it is just Honeygo Elementary that will be closing early, we are required to notify each parent. In the event that we do not get in touch with you, your child will remain at school until he/she can be picked up by a designated adult. In addition, when Honeygo Elementary alone closes early for any reason, Open Door closes as well. For all of these reasons, it is imperative that you complete and return the Emergency Contact Form as soon as possible.

ANIMALS AND PETS Due to the possibility of danger to children we cannot allow pets onto the school grounds. Please do not bring your pets onto school property at arrival or dismissal times. Even pets on leashes can be dangerous when frightened by the presence of crowds of children and adults.

RAPTOR VISITOR SIGN IN SYSTEM The safety of all students and staff in Baltimore County Public Schools is of utmost importance to all of us. All schools are utilizing a system for checking in all visitors. The system is called V-soft by RaptorWare or Raptor. When you visit our school for the first time, you will be asked to present a government-issued photo ID or a driver's license to a staff member in the school office. The ID will be scanned, and the following information will be collected: your photo, your name, and your date of birth. This information will be utilized to check you in, create an ID badge, and compare your information against sexual offender databases throughout the country. If a person does not want their identification scanned, the staff will need to see your ID, verify your first name, last name, and date of birth and enter the information into the system manually. However, this method does not store the information, and you must do this each time you visit the school. If you have your ID scanned, you will be asked to show your ID only on future visits, and your name will be selected from an existing list of previous visitors. You will also be asked to check out with the office staff upon leaving the school so that we know you are no longer in the building. The information collected will not be shared outside of school and is kept on a secure server. Your assistance in keeping our students and schools safe is appreciated.

MSDE ATTENDANCE RULES: The MSDE Maryland Student Records System Manual defines "full-day" and "half-day" present as follows: "A full-time student must be present for at least four hours to be marked present for a full day; a full-time student must be present at least two hours to be marked present for a half day; a full-time student present for less than two hours must be marked as absent."

LATE ARRIVALS When students are late, parents must come into the office and sign students in.

CHANGES IN TRANSPORTATION To ensure the safety of your child, please

notify the homeroom teacher in writing of any change in your child's arrival and/or dismissal procedure. This would include changing from a bus rider to parent pickup, parent pickup to a bus rider, or enrolling your child in a before and/or after school program. If you have any questions, please contact Honeygo Elementary at 443-809-8700.

HONEYGO PHYSICAL EDUCATION Honeygo Physical Education Friends! We are so excited for the opportunity to teach and nurture your active students. All grades in the school will receive physical education twice a week except for 4th grade (once a week PE and the addition of instrumental music). Please make sure that on your student's physical education day they are wearing their tennis shoes and comfortable clothing for physical activity. We will be covering a wide range of units and activities this year and will always let you know what we are doing in our Physical Education world.

3:35 EARLY DISMISSALS On occasion, parents will arrive at school and ask that their child be dismissed for a doctor's appointment, etc. Children are normally dismissed at 3:50 p.m. To locate a child and have him/her pack up and gather homework supplies takes several minutes. By the time the child arrives in the office to leave early, it's 3:50 p.m. We would appreciate parents not requesting that their children be dismissed after 3:35PM. We appreciate your cooperation.

One word that you will hear a lot of in our school and gymnasium is mindfulness. Mindfulness is paying attention to the present moment without any judgement. We are concentrating on becoming mindful learners and being comfortable and aware of our immediate surroundings.

We look forward to an exciting and active school year. Please encourage your student to be physically active for at least 60 minutes every day.

VIDEOTAPING ON SCHOOL BUSES AND SCHOOL PROPERTY Please know that the safety of our children is of utmost importance whenever they are in our care. BCPS possesses the ability to videotape students and visitors on school property

and to videotape students (including audiotape) while on school buses. At the discretion of the superintendent or his designee, videotapes may be used for disciplinary purposes.

2018-2018 STUDENT HANDBOOK All students (Pre-Kindergarten thru 5th Grade) will receive a copy of the Student Handbook. Ms. Behnke and Ms. Lynch will meet with all students to review the document with them.

All students and parents must sign and date a statement verifying that they have received the Student Handbook and discussed its content. This statement is found in the back of the Student Handbook and must be turned in within 5 days of receipt of the handbook.

INSUFFICIENT CHECKS Issuers of dishonored checks presented to Baltimore County Public Schools will be given 10 days to submit full payment of the amount of the check, plus actual bank charges incurred by BCPS, by means of a money order, cashier's check, or cash. If this payment is not received by the end of 10 days, the issuer will need to submit full payment of the amount of the check plus $35.00. If payment is not received at the end of the 20-day period, BCPS will turn over the dishonored check, and all other available information related to this check, to the State's Attorney for criminal prosecution. If the dishonored check is turned over to the State's Attorney for collection, the school will not accept restitution from the check issuer. The funds will be remitted to the school by the State's Attorney's Office.

Counselor Connection - Message from Mrs. Carver Welcome to Honeygo Elementary! I am Wendy Carver, your child's school counselor. This week, I will be starting my monthly classroom guidance lessons. From now through the end of the year, I will be seeing each class every month and following the BCPS Counselor Core Curriculum. Each month will focus on specific topics geared toward teaching Honeygo students the various skills they need to have a successful school year socially, emotionally, and academically. Our first lessons are an introduction and orientation to my job and the ways I can support students. Each lesson has a short parent note that I send home that tells you what we learned. For these first lessons I am also sending home a green brochure with information about me, my program, and how to contact me. It also includes information about services that I offer to students. Please check your child's folder or backpack for this green paper. During the month of October, we will be learning about bullying. Students will learn to identify bullying versus teasing, and strategies to help them handle these situations. Look for new information each month in the Counselor Connection section of the school newsletter! Here are some tips to use at home to help your child be the best student he or she can be! 1. Know, Communicate and Support School Rules--The parent handbook is a great place to look for any questions you might have. 2. Ensure Good Attendance--Children learn by being present each and every day! Don't forget to let your child know that attending school daily and on time is a priority in your household! 3. Make Homework a Priority--Try removing distractions and creating a designated homework area and time. 4. Read Often and Early-- Have a daily reading time, show your kids that you value reading too!
