Read the book, The Go-Around Dollar to the class. Discuss the book and the decisions being made. Have students write an alternative ending where the dollar gets spent on a need and not a want. Then discuss the goods/services from the book.Have students write their own need/want and good/service to create a class book. Have students create a foldable with images of needs vs. wants using pictures they cut out of magazines. Discussion on good vs. bad decisions when purchasing goods and services. Resources:Books, magazines, construction paper, writing worksheet Day 2: Budgeting (Gina)Topics: What is a budget?Ways to keep a budgetHow people make choices on purchases of wants and needs (prioritizing)Explain how people’s spending choices are influenced by many factors (advertising, spending choices of other, peer pressure).Developing budget plan based upon their job card and income.Lesson Ideas:Have groups briefly study budgeting key terms and phrases and then create a way to present content to the rest of the classIn groups, students will travel along with their job card and visit the 4 budgeting stations (2 of them will have mathematical scenarios and ask students to work together to complete the word problems. 1 station will involve students receiving their pay for the specific job and will be allowed to go “shopping” with their income. Items will be laid out with price tags attached. Students will choose wisely when purchasing. The last station will include tangible as well as word strips with specific items (wants and needs). Students are to place the item or word strip in the correct hula hoop (wants and needs). Have the students read the application carefully to understand the fees and charges that may incur using a credit card. Then have students create a chart of pros and cons of using a credit card. Discuss the findings. Have students fill out a credit card application to receive their own credit cards. Have the students take out a car loan and discover what it takes to pay it back based on their job cards. Then have students work in small groups based on their job cards to discuss what they learned from the video. Come together as a whole class after each section to clear up any confusion students may have. Bring in a collection of stock charts over a couple weeks. Show students where the stock listings are located and how to read the charts. Assign each group one company from either the DOW or NASDAQ to focus on based on what their job card says and compare week 1 to week 2. Does the value go up? Down? How much does the value change? Students will use their stock worksheet to guide them through these calculations.Have a discussion after about who’s stock was the most successful and why?
