1 World Fest Music Coming to our Neighborhood

1 Le Vent du Nord- First Concert

Sat Oct 26, 7 PM- RLHS

Cumberland ETC is excited to announce our participation is a new concert series featuring music from around the world! The program, Arts Midwest World Fest, features four concerts over two years performed by international groups. The first visiting group will be the Canadian folk group Le Vent du Nord the week of October 20-26. Other groups will be from Israel, China, and Brazil.

The World Fest Concerts are performed in only one venue for each Midwestern state for a two-year period. Cumberland ETC is working with the University of Wisconsin-Barron County, Barron Area Community Center, and Shell Lake Arts Center to feature the concerts. Area schools will also be involved.

(continued p. 2)

The program is sponsored in part by the 3M Foundation, the National Endowment for the Arts, and the MetLife Foundation. Additional generous

support is provided by our own local 3M plant right here in Cumberland. ETC is also helping fund the program and helping with the organization and planning.

Each group will be in the area for one week, during which they will meet local folks at a public reception, perform and provide workshops in area schools, and perform at a public concert. Tickets are $10 for this concert or $35 for the four concert pass. You can get tickets at Peter and Annie’s or at 715-236 PLAY or online at barron.uwc.edu. You won’t want to miss this exciting musical opportunity.

2 Community Choir Christmas Concert

Sunday December 8, 2 and 4 PM

You don’t need to drive to The Cities to hear a powerful and moving Christmas concert; you can come to our ETC concert at First Lutheran Church and find a superb helping of Christmas. Those of you who have made this an annual tradition know this to be true, and if you haven’t enjoyed this concert before, make this the year you do.

John Westin again directs the Mixed Chorus, Colleen Erb the Women’s Chorus, and Ron Ruppel the Men’s Chorus. Laura Lindquist and Sandi Miller are the accompanists. The concert program begins with the season of Advent and continues through the miraculous birth and the praise anthems, including the Halleluiah Chorus from The Messiah. The male quartet, Higher Vision will also sing several selections.

There is a suggested donation of $5.00. If you can’t afford that come anyway, we want you to enjoy this tradition. On the other hand if you can afford a bit more, be generous. ETC uses the offering from these concerts to provide music scholarships. This year we were able to offer Micah Weltzin and Josh Dorn $400 scholarships to Wisconsin Honors Band Camp. Through its 45 years of existence the Christmas Concert has provided $18,015 in scholarships to Cumberland young people.

3 Deathtrap

Oct 25-27, Oct31-Nov 2

Just in time for Halloween, ETC presents Deathtrap, directed by Phil Amundson and Mike Clay. Veteran actors Dan Hoffmann, Ann Kysely, Meg Atkins and newcomer Jim Tempesta make up the talented cast. One New York critic called it two thirds thriller and one third comedy, and overall a great story. Deathtrap is so full of twists and surprises it’s difficult to write a synopsis without giving a spoiler. Seemingly comfortably ensconced in his charming Connecticut home, Sidney Bruhl, a successful writer of Broadway thrillers, is struggling to overcome a “dry” spell, which has resulted in a string of failures and a shortage of funds. A possible break in his fortunes occurs when he receives a script from a student in the seminar he has been conducting at a nearby college—a thriller which Sidney recognizes immediately as a potential Broadway hit. Sidney’s plan, which he devises with his wife’s help, is to offer collaboration to the student, an idea that the younger man quickly accepts. Thereafter suspense mounts steadily as the plot begins to twist and turn with devilish cleverness, and with such an abundance of thrills and laughter, that audiences will be held enthralled until the final, startling moments of the play.

All shows are at 7 PM except the 2 PM matinee on Sunday, October 27. Tickets are $8 and available at Peter and Annie’s World Market.

2 Shotgun Johnson & the Mississippi Seven

4 Friday November 8, 7 PM

Shotgun Johnson & the Mississippi Seven play a clever, high-energy mix of Old-Time, Folk and Rock. You’ll hear old favorites as well as catchy original tunes.  Mr. Johnson himself is an accomplished musician, seasoned performer and gifted songwriter. Or so he claims. His repeated failures to show up for gigs he himself has booked has forced his band, & the Mississippi Seven, to furiously write dozens of original songs to fill out the contingency set list. Which they did. In one sitting, fueled by a high octane punch mixed of equal parts Mountain Dew, Red Bull and Swedish coffee. Black. Many of these songs may have been rehearsed. Enjoy! Tickets $7 at the door.

1 Thanks to retiring Board Members

Three members have stepped down from the ETC Board (although not from ETC involvement!). Mike Clay served most recently as President and Meg Atkins and Jim Kerr as board members. We thank them for their service time on the board, and know that as time goes on we will see them in plays, choir and helping where ever they can. Thank you, Mike, Meg and Jim!

3 Opening Night! It’s Opening Night!

Opening night! There’s electricity in the air backstage! And there’s excitement in the audience as they are the first to see the latest offering. This year we gave the audience of The Music Man a special opening night party to raise the excitement level. We need to thank Dr. Tom and Joan Mears for sponsoring this gala, and the Mears and Todd and Lisa Barrows for hosting the party.

This was a great example of the strength of our three-parted ETC organization. With many of the theater and music people involved in the cast, pit band or in technical roles it was great to have the Mears and Barrows, who are most associated with visual arts branch, step forward. The next day some of the music and theater people joined with visual arts folks to set up for Celebration of the Arts. Cumberland is blessed to have so many good people.

Again- Thank You, Tom and Joan and Todd and Lisa for underwriting and hosting our first Opening Night Gala. We hope it won’t be the last!

Chris Johansen, Eva Srubar, Brian Keeler and Mike Clay as the grandparents listen in on Ryan Mathison and Dana Warwick in Over the River and Through the Woods. Rumor has it the cast is trying to do an encore over the Holidays, to allow those of you too busy with Rutabaga to see it. Lots of logistics and schedules, so it may not happen, but we hope it does.

4 Thank You for Your Donations
