Intro to the Arabic AlphabetSummer HSSP 2020 (remote)Intro:The main goal of this class is to introduce students to Modern Standard Arabic (MSA or FusHa). MSA or FusHa, as opposed to the spoken dialects of Arabic (e. g., Egyptian, Saudi, Lebanese, Moroccan, Iraqi, Palestinian, etc.), is the only form of Arabic taught in schools throughout the Arabic-speaking world (from Morocco on the West coast of Africa to the United Arab Emirates on the Arab-Persian Gulf). It is the only form of Arabic held in common to all the Arabic-speaking countries and is the language used in literature, formal public speaking, print and broadcast media (including newspapers, magazines, television, and radio). Mastering MSA offers the great advantage of providing the fundamental core on which any attempt to approach the dialects must be based. In this class, the students are trained to recognize the Arabic alphabet, become familiar with its sound patterns, understand basic elements of grammar, and master the basics of everyday conversation. The course is laid out in such a way as to facilitate the integration of the two skills of reading and writing. Some practice with speaking will be done, but all of this is taught in the spirit that it’s pre-Arabic 01, preparing students by giving a head start in the script.Goals:In reading, a student will be able to: ? scan authentic texts on related subjects, ? extract from them the general ideas or simple details, ? achieve comprehension with speed and with NO use of dictionaries (using reading strategies and guessing.) In writing, a student will be able to: ? master Arabic alphabet and letter connections, ? write, with accurate spelling and structure, short compositions dealing with the self or the immediate environment and general interests.
