AH240 Surgical Technician Clinical Practice 2

6 Credits

Catalog Description: P-17, Cr-6

This course is the continuation of AH230 Surgical Technician Clinical Practice 1. Students are partnered with experienced Surgical Technicians and are expected to take a more active role during surgical procedures. Surgical specialties include General Surgery, OB/GYN, Orthopedic, Otorhinolaryngology, and Genitourinary. Surgical interventions include special patient care considerations, room setups, anesthesia, positioning, skin prep, draping, incision and approach, supplies, equipment instrumentation, procedural steps, counts, dressing materials, specimen care, and postoperative destination and care.

17 hours laboratory experience

Prerequisite: AH230 Surgical Technician Clinical Practice 1.

Student Learning Outcomes:

Upon successful completion of this course a student will be able to:

• Participate in the preparation for any special preoperative procedures related to each

procedure by specialty.

• Demonstrate the use of surgical instruments, supplies, and drugs by surgical specialty.

• Identify the names and uses of special equipment related to each surgical specialty.

• Define and give an overview to of the purpose and expected outcomes of basic procedures of each surgical specialty.

• Describe the immediate postoperative care and possible complication of the core procedures of each specialty.

• Participate in the first scrub and second scrub roles in a variety of surgical procedures

1. Ophthalmic Surgical Procedures

2. Plastic and Reconstructive Surgical Procedure

3. Cardiothoracic Surgical Procedures

4. Peripheral Vascular Surgical Procedures

5. Neurologic Surgical Procedures

Evaluation Methods:

The students will be evaluated by a clinical instructor that is present at the clinical site or visits the site weekly. The clinical instructor will observe the students performing the duties as a first scrub or second scrub surgical technologist, in the clinical setting. The experienced Surgical Technologist that the student is paired with each day, at the clinical site, will also provide pertinent feedback on the student’s performance. There will also be written assignments due throughout the clinical experience.
