UNDERSTANDING BANK FINANCIAL STATEMENTS

CASE STUDY FOR WASHINGTON BANKERS

The document on the following page is the Washington State Banking Profile provided by the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation. This document provides a snapshot of the financial condition of financial institutions in the state of Washington.

Please Review the FDIC State Profile with emphasis on the sections labeled, Asset Quality; Capital / Earnings; Liquidity / Sensitivity; and Loan Concentration. These sections compare the performance of all Washington Banks in the state by periods of time. The results shown are the Medians for all banks in Washington.

Your assignment is to compare the results in the Third Quarter of 2013 column to your bank’s actual results. In doing so, you are required to retrieve your bank’s performance from the Uniform Bank Performance Report posted by the Federal Financial Institutions Examination Council.

To retrieve this information, visit website and click on Industry & Analysis. Slide your pointer to the left and highlight Bank Data & Statistics. Then view the list below and engage the Uniform Bank Performance Report tab. This will take you to the FFIEC website. At this point, you should engage the highlighted UBPR Reports tab and complete the required information to be submitted. Remember, you are retrieving information about your bank, therefore, peer information is not required for this assignment. If you need help interpreting the information on the UBPR, click on the UBPR User’s Guide in the left column of the FFIEC Home Page.

When you have your bank’s information on the UBPR, please write your bank’s ratios as of the Third Quarter of 2013 next to the results for the Third Quarter of 2013 on the FDIC State Profile for Washington.

Provide a brief explanation in areas where your bank’s ratios vary by more than 50 basis points (or percentage points) from the median percentages in all of the areas except Loan Concentration.

To assist you, Notes to the FDIC State Profile, which explains the calculation and interpretation of each ratio, are included.

Be prepared to present your results during the class session.
