?Course Overview: Welcome to 8th grade language arts! Throughout this year we will be continuing our study of grammar, vocabulary, speaking, listening, writing, and various literary genres. I am excited to begin this rigorous, yet rewarding study of language arts with you this year. It is important to apply yourself and focus on your daily tasks in order to best prepare yourself for your high school career. Always remember that the effort you put into your studies reflects in your output.Course Objectives: Objectives are based on the Alabama Common Core Standards.Student Quarterly Guide:First Quarter:August 8th – October 6th Themes:Truth, Perspective, SignificanceSecond Quarter:October 9th – December 15th Themes:Conflict, Conscience, LearningThird Quarter:January 4th – March 16th ThemesCommunication, Identity, ConvictionsFourth Quarter:March 20th – May 24th ThemesHeroism, Legacy, Facing ChallengesResources: Language Network, 6+1 Traits of Writing by Ruth Culham and Prentice Hall Literature are the texts used in this course. All students need to have an accelerated reading book with them EVERY day in class for reading. Two QUIZ grades are generated from A.R. each quarter. One for the percentage of the goal met, and the second for the average score of tests taken. Please read and test early and often each quarter. No A.R. tests may be taken when a substitute is teaching the class. At the end of each quarter, as an incentive, those students who make their A.R. goals by the date I specify, will be rewarded with a pizza party (or breakfast, depending on the time of day). Grading: Most grades are based on a 100 point scale (100-90=A, 89-80=B, 79-70=C, 69-60=D, and 59-<=E). Each quarterly grade is based on class performance, grades on quizzes, tests, homework, projects, bellringers, weekly summaries, and other activities. Points will be deducted for each day that an assignment is late. Please note that the grades are weighted according to the following scale:Major Assignments (major assessments, tests, writing and projects) = 60%Minor Grades (observations, journals, minor projects, quizzes) = 30%Homework (homework assignments and bellringers) = 10%As many opportunities are given for grades each week, there will be no extra-credit assignments created or accepted. Each student is encouraged to produce his/her best work in a timely manner for each and every assignment. Absences/Make-Up Work: Students are responsible for their own incomplete/make-up work. If a student is absent or has an incomplete assignment, it is his/her responsibility to acquire information about the assignment and make it up as soon as possible. Incomplete/make-up work needs to be completed within ONE WEEK of the assignment or absence. If assignments are NOT COMPLETED within that given week, the highest percentage of points the student can earn will be 70%. Make-up work may be obtained directly in class or online from the Semmes website. Failure to make-up any work will result in the grade of a zero. Our weekly notes, assignments, and much or our classwork will be available and completed using pencil and paper or via Office 365.Expectations: Come to class prepared to learn dressed in proper school uniform. Appropriate colors and no hoodies.Have your supplies with you. TreatsDiscipline assignment or detention3. Privileges(essay, silent lunch, PE Detention)Administrative referralClass time is very valuable. Students who do not come prepared or who are disruptive waste their time as well as the time of others. This will not be tolerated, and parents will be contacted if a student violates the rules of good classroom behavior. We look forward to an enjoyable, meaningful learning experience with all of our students this year! Parents will be notified via email and/or text mostly. Parents will also be notified if there are any changes to any of the information listed in the syllabus.Bellringers/Chapter Summaries:Both are due on Fridays! There are four or five (4 or 5) Bellringers and chapter summaries each week. You will be provided a pre-printed Bellringer sheet and Chapter Summary sheet each week (excluding EQT testing weeks) that contains a block for each day. Each Bellringer sheet must have the student’s name, date, and class period on the appropriate lines. Each individual bellringer block must be dated. There should be no doodling or artwork along the margins of the page. This is a graded document and should, therefore, look clean and professional. You will have approximately 5-7 minutes to complete each daily Bellringer. They will be displayed on the SmartBoard each day with instructions as to what you should do. Each chapter summary has a space for the characters, setting, and conflict to be stated. Please complete each for every chapter, daily.Homework: Homework is any work that the student does not complete in class. The student should bring the completed assignment to class the next day. Written Work: Written assignments should be submitted in plain blue or black ink on the front side of the paper only OR typed in Times New Roman, 12 font. All submitted assignments should be legible. Work not meeting these standards will be given a zero, returned for resubmission and a late grade. Each page should be headed with your first and last name on the top left side. You should stay inside the margins with the exception of item numbers. Handwriting that is normally too large or too small should be adjusted for legibility. Essays: Essays are typically three to five (3-5) paragraphs long. You will be informed as to the length of the essay. Paragraphs are five to seven (5-7) sentences long as a MINIMUM. You may include as many sentences as necessary to cover your topic. Be careful to stay on topic. The addition of adjectives, adverbs and descriptive clauses, as well as figurative language (similes, metaphors, onomatopoeia, alliteration) will help you reach this goal. Sentences begin with a capital letter and end with the appropriate end mark (punctuation). Editing Marks: There will be times you will be required to edit your writing (yours or someone else’s). These marks should be used to indicate the changes you feel that person should make. They are time and space savers. Editing marks should be made in an opposite color from the text on the page.Graphic Organizers: There are many different graphic organizers that we will use during the school year. Make sure to complete all organizers in their entirety.On-Line and Learning: Traits Writing and Pearson Literature books are used in class very often. While I do not have enough copies of the Traits Writing books, these assignments will be completed in class. If you are not able to complete any assignments in class, you should complete as homework and turn in the next day. Traits Writing has a Benchmark Paper due approximately every three weeks. The student is informed of this paper at the beginning of the three weeks and it is due at the end of the three weeks. The papers will differ in type and length. All requirements will be posted in the classroom, online on my school page and via remind. These papers are a major grade. However, Pearson Literature has an online version of their text. Your student will be able to login using the following information. Please allow a couple of weeks to get these into the system as I have to do them individually. Be sure to use the access code for your student’s grade level. Please do not depend on the online text to do all of your work as a very small percentage of the stories are not available online due to copyright issues. Make sure you read the stories a couple of times in class. All questions and activities are available online.Progress Reports: Please check iNow for your child’s grades and any missing assignments.Office 365: As a student in Mobile County Public Schools System, you have access to Office 365 by clicking 365.. The student should enter his username and password that he/she uses to logon at school on the computer. Remind: This application will be used to remind students and parents of upcoming assignments, homework, or school-related events. BYOD: Bring Your Own Device. Students will be using their devices when informed by the teacher to participate in class instruction and to complete their assignments.Kahoots!: This is an online tool, which will be used to assess students in class via their devices. The students will be informed when their device is needed for this activity.Student Email: Also, in addition to Office 365, the student also has an email account available for his/her use. It is important for students to check this email often. Students may type mail. and access their emails. Please remember that student email system is hosted by and monitored by MCPSS and is, therefore, subject to all rules and policies of the Mobile County Public School System. Abuse of the site or inappropriate emails will be subject to disciplinary action.Procedures:When you come to class: Sharpen pencils, take out a sheet of paper, bellringer sheet, and chapter summary sheet. When the bell rings: Sit down quietly, review the Bellringer, while I call roll. Write the day’s Sonday word and meaning via the Frayer Model. Complete Steps 1 and 2 in your Notebook. After you have started the bellringer, we will read/listen to a chapter from a novel. This is done to assist you with your A.R. You will take out your chapter summary sheet and complete the characters (new characters), setting, and any conflicts that have arisen in the chapter. Finally, we will review the unit, essential question, course of study standards, unit vocabulary, objectives, and the day’s lesson. At the end of class: Pick up any papers or trash and throw away as you exit. Place any textbooks in the basket under the desk. Return any other materials to the book shelf. You will be dismissed by the teacher!Planning and Conference Time: In order to request a conference time, please email the teacher at tbarnes1@ to determine availability.
