How did the Allies win the Second World War?Introduction:The Second World War involved Hitler and Germany fighting against Britain- although you’ll soon see it was a lot more complicated than that. It was also even bigger than the First World War; it involved even more countries and even more people died as a result. Over the next few weeks, you will complete a new topic studying the battles of the Second World War. You will study each battle and by the end of the sequence of lesson you will be able to answer the big question: How did the Allies win the Second World War? ‘The Allies’ is a term used to describe the countries who worked together to win the war (Britain, France, Russia and the USA).Getting ready to do your work:You are going to continue to complete most of your work on the Second World War in your exercise book. This is so that all your work can go in one clear place, rather than lots of individual files online. If you do not have your exercise book complete the work on paper/notebook or on the computer. If you work on the computer save all the work in a folder called ‘The Battles of WWII’.We will though be asking you to do the work at the end of the topic online- that way you can share it with your teacher for them to mark. Don’t worry about that for now though- more information will follow at the end of the topic! You should be completing a maximum of 2 hours history work every week. Once you have completed 2 hours STOP, even if you haven't quite finished. Everyone will be working at a slightly different pace at home.If you are stuck or have any questions, then just email your teacher or message them on teams.Work for this Week:This week you are going to begin to find out about how the Allies won the Second World War. You are going to be using a chapter from the textbook Modern Minds to help you. The chapter is attached to this assignment for you to read- you could either read it online or print it off if you find that easier. You need to complete the 5 tasks in your exercise book. This represents two lessons work- it is up to you whether you do it all in one go or spread it out across the week. You might find it easier to follow your timetable and do the work when you would have had a lesson. If you have completed 2 hours of work but not quite finished all the tasks don’t worry – everyone works at a different pace. Just make sure you put aside the right amount of time for history work each week - 2 hours.Task 1: Big QuestionMake sure you have the big question ‘How did the Allies win the Second World War?’ written across a whole page in your exercise book.Task 2: Early Days 1939-1940Read page 74-75 in Modern Minds and look at the map.Think about the text and the map (where fighting took place, how many people were killed, what types of fighting took place) and write a short answer in your exercise book to the question: Why was the war between 1939-45 known as a World War? Task 3: Timeline Draw a timeline across a double-page spread of your book. There is a copy of what the timeline needs to look like on the 'World War II Timeline' PPT slide attached to this assignment. You are going to build up a timeline of the key battles/events in World War II on this timeline over the next few weeks.Task 4: Adding events to your timelineRead page 76-7 in Modern Minds. Place the following events on the right place on your timeline:Hitler and the Nazis took over Holland, Belgium and FranceDunkirkBattle of Britain Task 5: Battle of BritainWe are going to find out about some of the key battles of World War II over the coming lessons. The first one you will find out more about is the Battle of Britain (Codename Operation Sealion). You need to read the story 'Operation Sealion and the Battle of Britain' attached to this assignment. There is also a recording of Mrs Goudie reading the story if that would be helpful. You might want to read the story at the same time as listening to it. After reading/listening to the story write 2-3 sentences underneath/next to your timeline summarising what happened in the Battle of Britain and how it made allied victory more likely. You could use these sentence starters to help you:The Battle of Britain was when........By the end of 1940 the British Air Force had managed to.......................The Battle of Britain made Allied victory more likely because..........................
