Never Say Never…..
says the ‘new’
kid on the block!
Welcome to my first Chit Chat article! Those of you who know me know I like to talk…but I bet you didn’t know I can type faster than I talk! All kidding aside, I want to thank you for this opportunity to work as the Christian Education Director for the Manitowish Waters Community Church. Let me give you a little history on my background that brought me to this position!
In 1988 I said the infamous “NEVER AGAIN” statement after retiring from 16 years as the church organist at Trinity Lutheran Church in Boulder Junction, along with teaching Sunday School and directing the Children’s Choir. Fast forward to 2014 when I get a call from Lois Bauers asking, in her sweet charming voice.. “could you help out as organist?” And before you know it, I’m back on the ‘bench’! So of course I am drawn to getting involved with the Youth Group. Next – Joan Diozegi retires… and here I am.. full circle, but excited, eager and enthusiastic to ‘try’ to fill her shoes. All things work together for those that love our Lord. You will now have to carry me out of here!!
With the help of our accomplished teaching staff and assistants, I am looking forward to a smooth transition with guidance from them, and hopefully some new ideas and enthusiasm from new volunteers!
I am so exited to share some of my goals for this year which include:
• More student participation in regular services; such as greeting, acolytes, ushers, fellowship serving
• More youth performances throughout the year
• Involve the students in a mission project
• Display student art projects throughout the entryway
• Plan and create a banner for the choir loft
With your help we will all rejoice in teaching the children lifelong relationships with God through fellowship, music and instruction. We all have a commitment to instill a positive and spiritual experience for our Youth Group Students.
Now we need to take care of some upcoming business!
First, the Fleazaar! The Manitowish Waters Community Church Youth Group helps to sponsor the food booth at the Fleazaar, this year being July 19th, and I am looking forward to having an overflow of volunteers. No past experience necessary – will train on the spot – and the rewards are out of this world! Don’t be bashful… we’d love to have all moms/dads/kids/relatives join in this crazy but fun day! See or call Margo Perkins (715-686- 2035) or myself (715-329-0009 or 543-2402) for more info.
Next, more Fleazaar… the Saturday drop off at the barns would love to see as many of us as possible – from 9:00 am to Noon any Saturday before Fleazaar. You won’t believe how much fun we have and how many people you get to meet and work with!
And finally.. the last of Fleazaar requests…. Donations of name brand soda cans for the beverage corner of the food tent. (Example; Coke, Pepsi, A & W Root Beer, Sprite… etc..)
The 2017/2018 Youth Group Calendar will be in the next Chit-Chat issue. Please note the first day of Wednesday classes will be September 20. Spread the word and bring a friend.
I am looking forward to sharing God’s good news with you this year, and can’t wait to launch some new and fun projects, and we want you all to be involved! If you have any suggestions/questions, see me at church or call/text me at 715-329-0009.
In gratitude,
Adele Duranso

Great are the warm days of summer, gentle rain, green all around and colorful landscapes. Now move ahead to November. This is when we focus on Winnebago Mental Health Institute located at Winnebago, WI near Oshkosh. We, members of MWCPC, purchase items suggested by Volunteer Coordinator, donate money and gift cards for Christmas and special activities during the year in support of WMHI.
WMHI: Healthcare for Today and Hope for Tomorrow
Mission: The safety net in Wisconsin’s health care continuum.
Vision: We strive for a high degree of customer satisfaction in an injury free environment.
Guiding Principles and Values:
Dignity and Respect, Consumer-oriented Treatment, Health and Wellness, Trauma informed Care, Cultural Competence, Customer-Focused Operation and Quality Environment.
WMHI - Civil Services:
Sherman Hall North and Sherman Hall South are coed, minimum security units that serve an average daily population of 40 patients for psychiatric assessment, stabilization, medication management and treatment.
Forensic Services consists of four units:
Petersik Hall North is a 29-bed, all male, admission, assessment and treatment unit in a medium security setting.
Petersik Hall South is a 29-bed, all female unit.
Choice is a 44-bed, gender specific, minimum-security, general psychiatric unit.
Gemini is a 22-bed, coed, minimum security treatment program that serves patients with a dual diagnosis of mental illness and alcohol and other drug abuse (AODA) issues.
Treatment malls in Petersik Hall and Gordon Hall utilize multidisciplinary staff to provide treatment groups designed to meet the specific needs of the patients.
Youth Inpatient Services Unit is a 3-bed, gender specific, assessment/treatment unit for children and adolescents. Short and long term treatment is available with a focus on comm
unity reintegration. The average age is 7 with the youngest being 3 years old. Recently they had 70 youth with the average about 45 youth ranging in age from 3 to 18. The average stay is 2 weeks. Most cases are behavioral due to no structure at home, depression/anxiety and mental illness. Sexually abused as young as 3 years. Recent weekend patient count: 212: 103 men, 109 women (151 adults and 61 children.)
WMHI – Waterwood School
Waterwood School is a K-12 school serving the patients of WMHI. Youth who are admitted as patients and have an expectation of remaining in the hospital for a period of time are enrolled in the school. Typically, youth patients with a legal status of ”14 day”, “Commitment”, “Settlement Agreement” and “Voluntary” are enrolled and attend school.
Waterwood professional staff members are properly trained and licensed as teachers in Wisconsin. All are accomplished managers of youth who possess unique difficulties with social behaviors and /or extraordinary learning challenges. Because the school serves youth from throughout Wisconsin, it is diverse both in culture and learning need.

Welcome to summer! I hope you are all planning a bang up Fourth Of July Celebration. It is a time to enjoy the outdoors with friends and family, eat lots of picnic foods, watch fireworks with wonder and wide eyes and give Thanks and Praise for the wonderful country we live in.
Very soon, we will be welcoming our newest member, Denise Goldsworthy. Seek her out with a warm hello and hopefully I will have her introduced in the August Chit Chat. By now, our 2016 new members, Tom and Julie Rued, will have been formally installed. They are two very busy people, still maintaining two homes and traveling back and forth. Last year, they were wonderful Fleazaar helpers and we all hope to see them pitching in this year.
As much as we love to welcome new members, we are sadly saying farewell and best wishes to our longtime member, Joan Dioszegi. She is aggressively approaching an entirely new chapter in her life. In fact, by the time you read this, she will have officially moved to Neenah, Wisconsin. She will be close to her daughter, son-in-law and precious grandson, Charlie.
Joan has been with us for 16 years, 10 of those years as our Christian Education Director. I began teaching Youth Group the same year Joan began her position and we have learned and grown during this time. In fact, I remember the first time I saw this shy, wall flower sitting quietly in the pew at our Sunday Worship Service. When I found out that she was a Logan, I knew that she was connected to a lot of people I knew in the Presque Isle/Winchester area. Slowly and without being very visible, Joan began actively making Manitowish Waters Community Presbyterian Church her home. She stretched out of her comfort zone and began taking on leadership roles. You may not know all of the ways that Joan has been an influence in the development of programs and activities in our church. If you have participated in and enjoyed the Ash Wednesday Soup Supper, know that this was Joan’s idea and she chaired this event for many years. —yum! It added a homey, family atmosphere to a somber evening as we entered the Lenten Season. If you are enjoying listening to our Bell Choir, Angelus, know that it was Joan’s idea to pursue forming this new musical dimension to our Worship Services. As Judy Erickson, with her willing assistant, Tom Erickson, took on the task of acquiring the bells, recruiting the ringers and directing some people who had never see
a hand bell, Joan stepped in and rang with a big smile on her face. If you are among the women in our church who had the privilege of attending one of the Women’s Retreats, know that this was Joan’s idea, organization and leadership that made this a reality. I attended each one and was amazed at the fluidity with which it ran, the loving fellowship we all experienced and the new ideas and activities that Joan introduced us to. These were truly enriching times that I will treasure forever. In the 10 years that Joan has been our Christian Education Director, our Youth Program has grown through many stages. This past year was wonderful and we have happy, enthusiastic teachers. We feel confident that she will be leaving us with the ability to maintain and extend this program to fulfill all that we hoped it would be.
There have been many times that you may have entered the church during the course of the week and seen Joan sitting at Lois’s desk. When available, she was always willing to help out and relieve Lois when needed. Of course, there are others who have served in this capacity as well, but it is one more thing to thank Joan for. In the past couple of years, Joan has taken the time to join our Women’s Guild and become an active and valuable member. There were LOTS of times that you might have seen her sitting at her computer, concentrating hard and typing away. She, along with others, spent countless hours entering recipes for the beautiful cookbook that the Westminster Guild has so lovingly published. As Joan has been a subtle, “behind the scenes” worker, I am sure that there are many ways that she has enriched our church that I am not aware of.
This was not an easy decision for Joan. Moving away from her “Beloved Home”, that being her church home and all of us, took a lot of thought and preparation. She feels confident that this is the best plan for her life at this moment in time. Please wish her all the best in this new life transition. I am sure we will all see her back for visits and especially Fleazaar!
Joan, please know that we are all grateful for your contributions to our “family” and our Blessings go with you.
As always, please be aware of friends or people you meet who may be looking for a church home that will welcome them with open arms for a Blessed experience and Spiritual growth. Just steer them toward Lois and she will be sure to get them connected.
Respectfully submitted.

WHAT HAPPENS TO ALL OF THE STUFF AFTER FLEAZAAR?
We are often asked this question and we have several answers. First, we hope most of the items are gone. Metal and cardboard are recycled. Each area decides on whether or not they want to hold over items for next year and a large number of items are taken by non profits.
Each year we invite a number of area non profits to take items their organizations can use. The individuals will have from 3:00-4:00 on Fleazaar Day, July 19th to select and pack their choices. They are expected to take all items with them that day. We have several groups coming with volunteers, trucks and trailers to haul away furniture, building materials, and other assorted items. Currently, we have about a dozen groups coming for leftovers.
We have several church members gathering materials for non profits. If you have a group you would like to represent, please talk with Nan Bloch, 715.356.6410 or daniel.bloch@. All groups and individuals representing groups will need to sign in at the entrance at 3:00 after the Fleazaar sale.
Wouldn't it be wonderful if the dumpsters weren't so full?

WESTMINSTER GUILD
During the month of June and the first half of July, Westminster Guild meets EVERY Thursday
in preparation for Fleazaar! You will find busy groups all over the church – Jean Eales and her group are cleaning and pricing many antiques and treasures down in the basement; Bobbie Behnke and crew are in the kitchen, making pies for the bake sale; Mid Sharpe and Kathy Vogt are working on all those wonderful lunches we serve to the Fleazaar worker bees. In fact they already have all the desserts DONE – no problem with their priorities! Others are putting together “gifts in a jar,” specifically jars of cookie mix, to sell in our “Country Store.” Helyn Woolf and hope Dougherty will be in charge of our Giftware area, and they are in need of special things, which YOU may have in your attic, basement, or closet! Still others are getting our cookbooks ready (inserting the category dividers) for what we hope will be a BIG seller!
Speaking of our COOKBOOK, we celebrated our cookbook “launch,” “Taste and See,” on Sunday June 11, following our church service. With over twenty items to sample, it was a very successful and FUN event! Thanks to all of you who helped us with this event – and especially THANKS to all of you who contributed recipes for the cookbook. We are so pleased with the final product, and it is all because of you!
One final Fleazaar plea for the Guild’s BAZAAR side – please scour your nooks and crannies for any items that we could sell in our Giftware Country Store, Jewelry, Treasures and Antiques areas, as well as art (which will be INSIDE this year) and plants (which will move OUTSIDE). Items you may no longer need could be just what someone else is looking for! And finally, please don’t forget to plan your baking to include items for the bake sale. That area sells out FAST on Fleazaar day, and we could always use more yummies. Thanks so much

“Live each day as though it were the first day you had ever lived and the last day that you would ever know, as if it were the only day you had, as if there were no tomorrow. Nothing is worth more than this day.” Goethe
We all shift gears as summer moves forward. The season changes, the light expands, and it seems as if we all have more time. As school ends for the season, and family vacations begin, those of us here in Manitowish Waters Community Church often find ourselves swept forward into the exciting tsunami of sweaty activity, loving labor, rich friendships, and organized chaos in that experience we know and love as the Fleazaar. In the midst of all this frenetic activity, however, I challenge each of you to take some time each day to shift from the ‘busyness of doing’ into a new appreciation of just being. W.H. Auden’s famous line says it best: “… to redeem the present from insignificance.” The “worth” of a day is often obscured in the rush to accomplish and the feeling that there is not enough time. Take the time this summer, to make moments of leisure in each day … a daily Sabbath of sorts. Take some time each day to get your bearings, so that at the end of the summer you can look back and say of today: “Nothing is worth more than this day.”
I’ve never forgotten the words of a friend after the death of her husband. Speaking of their last day together she said, “I wouldn’t trade anything in my life for that day. We had no idea, no warning it was our last day together, but it seemed as if God had given us a perfect day and we took every advantage of it.”
Each of you know what an incredible gift the first day of an infant’s life is, and although we cannot remember or recreate the first day of our own lives, a friend of mine insists, we are capable of imagining a day that is a pure gift. To allow yourself to live one of those days again is to fulfill Goethe’s advice: “To live each day as though it were the first day you had ever lived.” Live it well my friends.
Your Pastor, Chips
