PIKESVILLE HIGH SCHOOLPHYSICAL EDUCATION AND HEALTH DEPARTMENT2019-2020WEIGHT TRAININGCOURSE DESCRIPTIONWeight Training is a course where students use previously learned skills from the required physical education course, Fitness Foundations/Fitness Mastery, to provide the foundation for this elective course. Selecting this course means that students will be placing emphasis on personal improvement of muscular strength and muscular endurance. The Introduction to Weight Training course utilizes the Bigger, Faster, Stronger program in order to provide students the opportunity to pursue a personal fitness plan that enhances all health-related components of fitness. Grades in physical education are based on three domains (cognitive, psychomotor, and affective). The three domains are aligned to the national standards for physical education. Balancing points in each domain will ensure a complete “body of evidence” in which no one domain will make or break a student’s report card grade. Minor Assignments may consist of items including, but not limited to, classwork, homework, and learning checks. Major assessments may consist of items including, but not limited to, tests, quizzes and projects. For all standard and honors courses, minor assignments will account for 70% of the overall grade for the marking period; major assignments will account for 30% of the overall grade for the marking period. For all GT/Advanced Academic and Advanced Placement courses, minor assignments will account for 60% of the overall grade for the marking period; major assignments will account for 40% of the overall grade for the marking period.Academic dishonesty (cheating on tests or grade assignments, copying term papers or essays, or forging signature of teacher and/or parent/guardian) and plagiarism is unacceptable at Pikesville High School and disciplinary action may result if students are found in violation of the BCPS Student Handbook. Students will receive a 0 on the assignment and must participate in a required parent conference with teacher and department chair to discuss an alternative way to demonstrate mastery. If a conference is not held, the 0 will stand in the gradebook. Students cheating on BCPS created assessments will not be afforded the opportunity to redo the assessment. Gradebook notations:The following notations may be used in the gradebook by teachers. “LS” indicates that a student has made an effort to complete an assignment, but their effort resulted in a grade of 50% or lower. “M” indicates that a student has not submitted the assignment or has submitted responses on an assignment that are not content relevant. This could be the result of the student choosing not to do the assignment OR it could be because the student was absent from class. Regardless of the reason, it is the student’s responsibility to work with the teacher to make up the missing work. Failure to make up the work by the required deadline will result in the student earning a grade of “0” on the assignment.Redo Protocols at Pikesville High School? One of the foundations of the BCPS Grading and Reporting Policy is that students are given multiple opportunities to demonstrate mastery of learning.?? At Pikesville High School, we acknowledge that students learn at different rates; therefore, we encourage all students to take advantage of the Redo Policy.?? Students will be given two (2) weeks from the date of their return to school from an excused absence or two weeks after the return of an assignment from the teacher to complete a redo assignment.?? The only exception to this procedure is at the end of the marking period.? It is the responsibility of the student to secure the make-up assignment from the teacher utilizing the established PHS make-up form for each assignment they would like to redo.???Students may not redo county issued exams, benchmarks and PBAs as per curriculum office policy.? Teachers also have the flexibility to determine which teacher-created major assignments may not be redone.? This will be communicated to students prior to submission of the assignment.?????As stated in the BCPS Grading and Reporting Manual for the 2018-2019 school year, page 21 indicates the following: “BCPS believes adhering to deadlines is an important skill and behavior for student growth. Due to the current structure of BCPS grading periods, there still remains a need for cut-off dates for additional learning opportunities. Deadlines for turning in additional learning opportunities will be determined by grade-level or content teams. It is recommended that students submit any additional learning opportunities at least one week prior to the end of a marking period.”?????Therefore, please take note of the deadlines for submission of missing work and redo work at the end of the marking period:?????1st Marking Period:? Providing students with their missing work is at the discretion of the classroom teacher.? In order to ensure access to missing work due to absences, students are reminded to provide their period 1 teacher (either A or B day) with a note explaining the reason for the absence. Upon providing the note and if the absence is excused, the student will receive a pink excused absence note which should then be shown to all teachers to retrieve the missing work. Notes should be submitted to the school within three days of return from illness. After three days, the absence will have to be approved by an administrator.???Academic Dishonesty?Academic dishonesty (cheating on tests or grade assignments, copying term papers or essays, or forging signature of teacher and/or parent/guardian) and plagiarism is unacceptable at Pikesville High School and disciplinary action may result if students are found in violation of the BCPS Student Handbook.?
