What are the school colors?

• There will be a spirit day once a month where students and staff are encouraged to wear red and white, the school’s colors.

Does Rodgers Forge have a school mascot?

• Yes! Our school mascot is Rodger, the colt.

What are the school’s hours?

• Students enter the building between 8:45am and 9:00am. At 9:00am, instruction begins. Kindergarten classes are dismissed at 3:25pm and the remaining grades are dismissed at 3:30pm.

What if my child is late for school?

• Parents are responsible for accompanying their child to the front office to obtain a late pass if a child arrives to school after 9:00am.

What do I do if my child needs an early dismissal?

• Please send a note in with your child if he/she needs to leave early. Parents must come directly to the school office to sign their child out. The child will be called to the office when the parent arrives.

What if there is a change in my child’s dismissal routine?

• If there is to be a change in the way your child travels home from school, please send in a note that morning to inform the school of the change. E-mails are not acceptable notifications of a change. If a change of dismissal is needed during the middle of the day, please call the office.

If my child is absent, what do I do?

• A written note of excuse for your child’s absence should be sent to the homeroom teacher upon your child’s return to school. Work requests (for the day your child is absent) may be made by e-mailing his/her teacher(s) at the beginning of the day. The work will be sent to the office for you to pick-up at the end of the day. Teachers are not required to give missing work to a student prior to him/her being absent.

How does my child pay for breakfast or lunch? How do I know how much money is in his/her account? How can I add money to my child’s lunch account?

• Your child will learn a four-digit code that will allow them to access their cafeteria account on the days they choose to buy breakfast, lunch, or a snack. To replenish your child’s account, you may: 1) send cash/check (made payable to Rodgers Forge Cafeteria) in an envelope marked with your child’s name, or, 2) you may add money on-line at .

How do I know what is being served for breakfast or lunch each day?

• Menus are sent home with students each month. Additionally, the monthly menu can be found at: offices/ofns/menus/.

Can I volunteer in my child’s classroom?

• In addition to volunteering, there are many other volunteer opportunities available throughout the year. Please remember that in order to volunteer in any capacity at RFES (even chaperoning a fieldtrip) you MUST complete the on-line BCPS volunteer training module. Please contact the VP of Volunteers at rfesvolunteers@ for more information.

Will my child get a school picture and how do I pay for it?

• Individual school portraits are taken in the fall and spring. Order forms are sent home prior to each Picture Day. There are instructions on the order form as to how to pay for the pictures and the amount for each package.

Do the winter and spring concerts include all grades?

• Our winter and spring concerts involve all fifth grade students. In the spring, the third grade students perform their recorders at a separate concert. The concerts are presented to the entire student body during the day. In the evening, families and guests of the students performing in the concert are invited to attend.

How does the Book Fair work?

• Prior to purchasing their selections, each class is given an opportunity to browse the materials to see what is available. Students will then have an opportunity, later in the week, to make a purchase. In addition, one day is set-aside after school for parents to browse and purchase books with their children.

What is PARCC?

• The Partnership for Assessment of Readiness for College and Careers (PARCC) is a consortium of 12 states plus the District of Columbia working together to develop a common set of K-12 assessments in English and Math anchored in what it takes to be ready for college and careers. The PARCC assessments will be administered during the 2015-16 school year to grades 3, 4 and 5. A link to our school’s prior assessment scores is .

How will I know what is going on at school?

• We have several ways that we communicate with the families at Rodgers Forge. Each month, a school newsletter, a PTA newsletter and a classroom newsletter are sent to all families via e-mail. A paper copy of the newsletters is available upon request.

What is the Buzz Book and how can I get one?

• The Buzz Book is a voluntary school directory that families purchase through the PTA. It gives great information that is helpful when trying to plan a playdate or birthday party! Order forms will be sent home in the PTA Back-to-School packet.

Does RFES have before/after school clubs? How can I sign my child up for a club?

• Extracurricular clubs occur both before and after school. The PTA will notify parents when it is time to sign-up for a club. Often times, clubs are so popular that the participants are selected through a lottery. Those students who are selected to participate in a club are notified of the date, time and location of the club.

Does Rodgers Forge Elementary School provide before or after school care?

• Although Rodgers Forge does not provide before or after school care, there are private companies that provide before and after care. Please contact the school office for additional information.
