Galati, Principal The first quarter will come to a close (November 9th) with an expected release of first quarter grades to be provided to families on the Parent Portal on/about November 17th. Prior to the conclusion of the first quarter, I encourage you to make contact with your child’s teacher and guidance counselor if you have any questions pertaining to your child’s academic progress. Parent/teacher conferences are scheduled for November 21st (Grades 7-12). Please contact your child’s teachers to block time to meet on these dates. Specific information related to parent – teacher conferences was mailed home as well as posted as a memo to parents on the website.Effective November 15th, we welcome Ms. Balcacer as a new member to the ELL instructional staff instructing students in ELL as a bilingual specialist. As always, appreciation is extended to our PTA for coordinating, planning and running the Scholastic Book Fair. The book fair was a huge success. Proceeds were given to Ms. Dougherty-Johnson to purchase books for our library. Appreciation is also extended to our PTA for providing lunch to our middle school students during spirit day.Our Middle School students enjoyed their first dance on Friday, October 13th. The theme for the dance was Halloween – students enjoyed themselves dancing and bonding with their peers. Students now have their own access to the Portal to track and assess their grades. Parents should retain a separate access code from that of their child’s. Advanced Lifestyle, and they will attend their first event at LIU Post on?Friday 10/27.? There, they will compete in a live elevator pitch competition, network with other VE firms on Long Island, attend breakout sessions in administration/human resources, sales/marketing/graphics/IT, and finance, and hear from entrepreneurial keynote speakers and facilitators.Mrs. Rich and Ms. Mincieli, ScienceMs. Mincieli and Mrs. Rich recently attended a workshop entitled "Fundamentals of the New York State Science Learning Standards" presented by Glen Cochran at Eastern Suffolk BOCES. The workshop included information to help prepare science educators for the shifts in teaching and learning expected with the NYSSLS along with practical applications.? For example, the new three-dimensional approach includes science and engineering practices, core content, and cross cutting concepts and involves less memorization and more inquiry-based learning.Ms. Dougherty-Johnson, LibraryThe library program is undergoing some exciting changes this year! Due to the upcoming construction, the library is temporarily closed, but instruction is still taking place. Some current examples include student projects on: creating book trailer videos, exploring the online Oxford English Dictionary, researching papers on environmental sustainability, making word clouds to depict visual self-images, and developing presentations comparing national economies. While we won’t have access to our whole collection of books, periodicals, and reference materials until we open in our new spot, we will still have many wonderful learning opportunities! Right now, the library’s home base is in the Career Lab (Room 205). There is a small cart of books and magazines, which are rotated routinely to keep readers reading new books. We all want to make sure our community has access to great books!Ms. Rizzo, Family and Consumer Science7rh grade Home and Career Skills students are working on a Food Shopping budget project on their Chrome books using Pea Pod with Mrs. Johnson our librarian to assist us with the project.College Culinary Arts I: Students are preparing a seasonal zucchini quick bread this week to practice learning the functions of ingredients in a recipe.Ms. Mincieli, ScienceOn October 17th, the Marine Biology and AP Environmental Classes took a trip to Stony Brook Southampton Marine Station where the students took a trip out into the Shinnecock Bay aboard the RV Peconic to conduct water testing as well as biological sampling via net trawl. Some of the animals that were caught were: a seahorse, juvenile black sea bass, pipefish, stickleback fish, squid, spider crabs, lady crabs, and mud crabs. Students also observed several seals that had made their way back to the Shinnecock Bay for the winter.On October 20th, the AP Environmental and High School Research classes took a trip to South Harbor Beach for the Annual Day in the Life of the Peconic Estuary field study program. Students collected water samples and completed chemical analysis on the current water conditions as well as collected physical data on the current weather conditions. Students also used a seine net to collect animal species. Some of the animal species that were collected were: killifish (various species), thousands of shrimp, mud snails, silverside baitfish, and comb jellyfish.?Mr. Gosnell, Art, Grade 7 ArtGrade seven art students just finished a unit on drawing. Students created self-portraits with sunglasses and cell phones. After finishing their self-portraits students were asked to draw a place they like to go or would like to go to in the reflection of the sunglasses and an object they like on the cell phone screen. An emphasis on this assignment was on the use of shading and light and shadow. We focused on drawing the features of the face and achieving light and dark values. Students then applied what they learned to create self-portraits. Ms. Gilmore, FrenchFelicitations to Evelyn Helinski who placed in the American Association of French Teacher's logo contest last spring.? Evelyn designed a logo to be reproduced by the Association; the theme was:" French, a global language."? She received a letter of commendation and a medal over the summer.? Congratulations to Evelyn.Mr. Pfister, TechnologyOne year ago the Southold Technology Club began working on building two duck boats from scratch. This project was the culmination of an ongoing work study venture between students and teacher to build on their technology skills after school. On Tuesday the 24th of October members of the club, parents, and supporters gathered at Founders Landing in Southold to christen the two boats. This project was a huge undertaking for the students involved and they are looking to show the two boats in an upcoming competition?November 5, 2017?at the South Shore Waterfowl Association's Duck Boat Show at Cedar Beach in Babylon, NY.? ................
