Within these standards frameworks, course objectives are defined as a compilation of the skills and knowledge herein. The Critical Benchmark Skills List at Paragraph 4 (below) constitutes the learning standards of this course.Course DescriptionThe second year Spanish program at CMA-B is designed to reinforce and increase students’ linguistic abilities necessary for basic communication in Spanish as well as broaden cultural knowledge of areas where this language is spoken. Students will engage in a variety of communicative activities that focus on developing reading, writing, speaking and listening skills in Spanish. In addition, the student will develop cultural awareness and become prepared to encounter real life situations outside of the classroom through discussions of cultural customs and behavior and by reading authentic materials written in Spanish and English. The course is taught in English and Spanish. The material presented contains basic Spanish vocabulary, listening/speaking and writing activities, grammatical structures, and instructions and explanations mostly in English. Students are expected to listen, read, write, and speak in Spanish to complete both benchmark assignments and assessments. Themes, learning activities and benchmarks will vary by quarter. At the end of this course, the successful student will develop a novice-low to novice-mid proficiency in the language.PrerequisitesSpanish 1Course ResourcesTEXTBOOK: There is no required textbook for this course.MATERIALS: 3 Subjects Notebook or 3 Ring Binder/ Pencils /Blue or Black Pens/ Loose-leaf paper/Spanish-English dictionary (optional)Course RequirementsPARTICIPATION & PREPAREDNESS: Students are expected to use the Spanish language to actively participate in all learning activities including reading, writing, speaking and listening activities. Active class participation is an integral part of language acquisition and participation grades will be a part of the quarterly grading process. The Social Emotional Learning Standards will be used to assess students’ academic behavior.FORMATIVE & SUMMATIVE BENCHMARK ASSIGNMENTS / ASSESSMENTS: Students are expected to practice and improve upon their Spanish reading, writing, listening, and speaking skills. Students are to complete various assignments throughout each unit to enhance and reinforce these skills. All skills are built upon from previous units so it is imperative that all assignments be completed in class by the student for immediate feedback and should then be studied at home for added practice. LATE Assignments/Assessments will end result in loss of 10% of points per day. After five days from the due date will end result in failure grade. Except medical reason accompany with a Doctor’s Note. ESSAYS / EXAMS / PROJECTS / ORAL REPORTS: Students are required to use the Spanish language to complete various assessments which include and are not limited to original writing and presentational speaking. Assessments will vary by quarter according to the topic/theme studied. Students will also be assigned research projects based on cultural topics to develop cultural awareness.
