News by Fantastic 5th Graders By: Jacob Moncada and Diego Hernandez

We are focusing on state reports in Social Studies. Each student has picked a state (for example Florida) and is researching specific information about their state to help us understand our country. We are using our laptops and online resources to gather information about the history, geography, and economy of our state. Here are some sample questions from our research:

History: When was your state admitted to the union? Was it part of the original 13 colonies?

Geography: What are some of the major landforms in your state?

Economy: What major industries are in your state?

When we finish researching our state, we will be creating an essay, e-book, or brochure to teach others what we have learned about states.

TITLE 1 PARENT NOTIFICATIONS

Title I Program information: Did you know that Roosevelt Elementary is a Title I school? Title I federal funding is allocated to

schools based on the amount of students who receive free or reduced school lunches. We are one of six schools in Bellingham that receive this funding. Title I funds at our school pay for our outstanding K-5 literacy intervention programs to support students who need extra help learning to read and write with proficiency. The salaries of our literacy intervention teachers, Lisa Aucutt, Carmen Avila, and Melissa Peterson, as well as instructional assistance time from Penny Will, and Shelly Mc Kay come from this funding. This summer, Title I funds paid for a summer reading program, sending books to qualifying students to help them continue their practice reading over the summer. Throughout the year, we use Title I resources to support our school improvement plans. If your child qualifies for or exits from Title I intervention support, our Title I staff send written notification. These programs include small group instruction with programs such as Leveled Literacy Intervention, Barton, Wilson, and Read 180. If you have any questions about this wonderful program or would like to request a meeting, please call 360-676-6440.
