Master Gardener Training Develop & deliver Rutgers Master Gardener training program in Bergen

1987-2016 County for twenty-five years. Bergen’s program was the 1st in the state,

Initiated in 1984 by Dr. Ralph Pearson. Today,19 other

counties have copied our success and recognize the program’s value.

New Undergraduate Curriculum Develop new BS degree curriculum in horticultural therapy

2001. for Plant Biology and Pathology Department. Design three

new undergraduate courses; Introduction to Horticultural Therapy, Horticultural Therapy Techniques and Programming, and Colloquium: People-Plant Relationships. Also worked with Plant Biology Chair to establish linkages with Departments of Psychology and Sociology.

Help to Establish County Brought together the N.J. Department of Agriculture, Bergen

Agriculture Development Board County Government, and the agricultural community in

1999 Bergen County to consider establishing a County Agricultural

Development Board. Facilitated meetings and ongoing

dialogue, resulting in County Agricultural Development Board establishment, September, 1999. To date over 310 acres of farmland have been preserved, More are completing the application process and are being considered for Farmland Preservation in the 2005 cycle.

Japanese Horticultural Therapy Host three study groups of Japanese Horticultural Therapy

Society – 1997-2000 students. Deliver lecture (via interpreter) on People-Plant

Relationships and tour local horticultural therapy programs, farms and accessible parks (September, 2000; August- October, 1996; June, 1997). Lectures translated into Japanese and published 1997.

Management Agent I, equivalent to Full Professor with tenure effective

eq. to Full Professor, July 1, 2004. Responsible for developing and conducting a

Rutgers Cooperative Research Cooperative Extension education program for professionals in

And Extension ornamental horticulture and production agriculture and also homegrounds; including training 700 Master Gardener volunteers. Extension practice includes applied research, conference/workshop planning and coordination, teaching, mass media, publication. Special emphasis on developing programs for individuals with special needs, including geriatrics, youth-at-risk, prisoners, youth mentally challenged and more.

County Extension Department 1991 to present County Extension Department Head and Head liaison to the County Department of Parks. Responsible for overall budget, staffing and marketing of RCRE Bergen.

Rutgers Cooperative Extension Primary function was to provide advice and technical

Therapy, Daughters of Miriam Developed a greenhouse and gardening program for the

Center for the Aged resident population of this skilled nursing home. Served

Clifton, NJ on medical treatment teams and established the position of staff horticultural therapist.

Specialist Primary responsibility was to develop interpretive programs

USDA Forestry Service for national forest visitors. Organized naturalist programs,

California designed trailhead displays, and supervised seasonal staff.

1999-2003 First Jobs Horticulture Training, Bergen County Department of Mental Health, Bergen Vo-Tech Special Needs and Friendship House. Design and deliver year-round horticultural program for at-risk and mentally ill youth funded by a grant from the Department of Mental Health. $60,000 paid to Rutgers Cooperative Extension in 2001 and 2002; $24,800 in 2000; $8,400 in 1999. Expanded in 2001 from summer program to year-round programming.

1996-2000 Landscape I.P.M. Conference; coordinate and chair North Jersey

version of successful Ocean County program; N.J. D.E.P. accredited; 41 attendees in 1996; 94 in 1997; 89 in 1998; 112 in 1999, 75 in 2000.

1998 Careers in the Green Industry and Workforce Preparedness. Juvenile Detention Center, Paramus, NJ. Design and deliver 12-module training for incarcerated youth, age 14-18. Funded by grant through Bergen County Department of Human Services; $7,400.

1996-1999 Workforce Preparedness Training; Hackensack Jail, Hackensack NJ.

Deliver two part training series, helping inmates prepare for post-

prison lives. Classes taught include Resume Preparation and Preparing for a Job Interview. Dates delivered in 1997: July 29,31; August 7,12; November 5,12. Evaluations indicate 100% of participants responding believed they are better prepared to pursue a job or career as a result of this training.

1996-1997 Job Readiness and Green Industry Careers; Phoenix Academy training series; Rockleigh, NJ; for at-risk youth. 14 participants.

1995-1996 Bergen County Jail Training Programs, designed and developed

with RCE Family and Consumer Sciences educator. Classes taught

include:

1992-1996 Careers in the Green Industry. Project team leader, responsible for development, coordination, teaching and evaluation of innovative

training program for correctional youth from all over the state.

Implement a highly structured curriculum lasting 12 to 25 weeks; classes

offered on Cook campus and at correctional facilities. 1992 pilot program

received $94,000 in grant funding from N.J. Department of Corrections; 45

youth participating. 1993 and 1994 expanded programs received

$217.000.00 in grant funding from N.J. Department of Corrections (Division

of Juvenile Services) and N.J. Department of Environmental Protection; 430

youth participating. 1996 limited to two facilities; 70 participants. This

innovative program has received regional and national attention. Our

curriculum has been requested by universities and correctional departments in

twelve other states and three Canadian provinces. Classes taught include:

2011-2012 Survey of Master Gardener Helpline users to determine perceived benefits and values. 100 respondents in 2011, 63 in 2012;articulated changes in lawn and landscape practices as a result of the information provided by Helpline. Less reliance on chemical pesticides and greater reliance on alternative IPM tactics were widely reported. Such evaluation & data validates the RCE

Helpline and gives us valuable data to make claims about its worth.

2008-2011 Using Horticulture for therapy and training with

developmentally disabled youth. Garfield Middle School,

Garfield, NJ, and Douglass Developmental Disabilities Center, New Brunswick, NJ. Evaluations indicate strong

preference for settings that include plants; pride in successes

with plants; retention of new horticultural information; and

teachers note greatly improved attention and behaviors.

2007 -2008 Farmer-Neighbor Survey; in cooperation with NJ Dept of Agriculture. Interview 3 farmers who have successfully faced challenges from neighbors over various issues (noise, dust, traffic, smells, etc.).
