REMINDER TO ALL MEMBERS

Lockheed Martin's Workplace Security policy, CPS-565 is strictly enforced. One provision of the policy is a workplace free of weapons, which includes Firearms, Ammunition, Bows and Arrows. The club must emphasize this policy to our members. Additionally, a state issued CCW permit does not supersede nor over ride this LM policy. Members wanting to store firearms or archery equipment during the day ONLY, must contact Gene Adamson (303-971-1531) for access instructions.

Call Plant Protection (7-4646) if you have an incident or injury on the range.

ADDITIONAL REMINDER TO ALL MEMBERS AND RANGE USERS

• Please be sure to observe the speed limits on the range access road.

• Please be careful when driving on the roads, the horses may not move out of your way.

• Gate signs are in place indicating when horses are in the pasture – it they sign says “horses in pasture” they need to be kept closed. New signs have been added to help make sure it is clear if the gate should be open or closed.

• Archery Hunting boundaries have been significantly constrained due to hazardous propulsion testing – adherence to restrictions are MANDATORY – see Archery Section and your Archery representatives for more info!

• Watch out for Rattlesnakes at the range!

President’s Corner

We’re into the “dog days” of summer but nothing seems to be slowing down. The club events continue to draw more and more participants and the weekends are seeing lots of folks using the ranges. If you haven’t come out to one of the club events, you really ought to try to get out there. We have some great people running the events and everyone will happily answer questions that you might have.

Everyone seems to be getting comfortable with the operations at the range. One of the biggest issues that we are still having is people getting their gear out of the vehicle before checking in with the RSO. When the range is open, the VERY FIRST THING you must do is sign in with the RSO! However, if the range is not open, you can mow grass, set up for events, or any other non-shooting work without signing in, calling Plant Protection, or putting out range flags.

There also seem to be questions about whether there is a separate RSO for shotgun. The answer is NO! There is only one RSO for the whole range.

As we have pointed out before, weekday RSO support of the club events need to come from the events themselves. If there is more than one RSO, you can trade off so that both participate. The club is working to get additional RSO support scheduled. If any RSOs want to volunteer for weekday support, the help is very welcome.

Coming up on Sunday, August 21st, at the recreation area pavilion is the annual Bull Roast and Swap Meet. The cost will be $2 per head for delicious BBQ, baked beans, potato salad, and other goodies. In conjunction with the Bull Roast, we’re holding the Varmint Shoot on Saturday, August 20th. More details are contained later in this newsletter. The Arcade Shoot will also be held at the range the morning of Sunday, August 21st. Bring the kids out and try some of the events then come over to the Bull Roast. If you are like most of us, you’ve got plenty of stuff around that you are no longer using, bought too much of, or have lost interest in. There are lots of folks in the club who can make use of your items. Bring ‘em out to sell or swap for somebody else’s stuff!

We are continuing to make improvements to the ranges. You should be seeing some changes in the areas around the Pistol House and the RSO shed. There is now a shed for the target stands just outside the door to the pistol house. Please treat this just like the other sheds. Use a bit of care when taking target frames out or putting them back in. If they are damaged beyond repair but have some salvageable pieces, set them to the side. If they are completely trashed, put them in the dumpster. We are also working to provide additional parking. The grading is done but we need to put some crushed rock down before it can be used on a full time basis.

We finally have the voicemail ready to go on the phone in the Pistol House. You should be able to call (303) 971-3798 and listen to a recorded message concerning the status of the range and how long the RSO will be there. There will be detailed instructions on how to change the message posted by the phone. Hopefully this will provide a convenient way for folks to make sure they don’t drive all the way out to the range just to find out there is no RSO.

We still need to slow down on the road to the range. The road is very narrow in places and the vegetation growth is making it even narrower plus, with all the rain, we’ve got some pretty good washboards going. Please watch your speed! Nobody wants to see club spending money on speed bumps, additional gates, or any other sort of enforcement.

If you notice something at any of the ranges that is worn out, broken, or just needs some improvement (and is not an immediate safety hazard), please let me or any member of the Board of Directors know what is going on and we will do our best to address it. We want to continue to keep the ranges in good shape and make sure that everything is operating the way it is supposed to be.

We still need a lot more membership participation to run the club and the ranges with this new method of operation. We’ve identified even more new jobs that need doing. Keep an eye on the emails for some of these announcements! If you are really anxious to get some hours in, Norm Viste (normviste@) is our Workbond Chair and has a list of tasks that need to be done.

new rso hotline and website

• Hotline: (303) 971-3798 (Recorded message about range and RSO status)

• Website: (RSO calendar accessible by all of the membership from both inside and outside the LM and ULA Networks)

• In the coming months look for many more improvements to the club’s website and electronic communications!

REQUIRED MANDATORY MEMBER TRAINING SESSIONS COMPLETED

If you are an existing member and you DID NOT attend any of the myriad of training sessions over the last few months you will be required to rejoin the club as a new member if you wish to continue your membership.

If you have questions – please contact: Gene Adamson (gene.adamson@) or Jim Cathcart (james.a.cathcart@).

**Annual bull roast BBQ – august 21st**

The 2011 SHFC Annual Bull Roast BBQ will be held on Sunday August 21st. Just before the Bull

Roast, we'll be again holding a shooting' arcade at the range for club members and their families/guests to

learn the fun and excitement of some of the current club events. The actual dinner time will be the

traditional High Noon at the recreation area, by the clubhouse. We are inviting club members to bring

hunting, fishing, or outdoor equipment to hold a swap meet around 11 am, after the shooting'.

Starting at 8am till 10:30am, so you have plenty of time to get back to the clubhouse/recreation area

to join the swap meet/bull roast and instructors can clean up the range, we will have stations set-up at the

Range to try out some of the most successful and FUN events the club holds.

The club will provide all rifles, pistols, shotguns and ammunition. All you need to bring is your hearing

and eye protection, and smiling faces. We will require all youths under 16 to have their Hunter or Family

Firearm Safety cards to participate in the shooting, in accordance with existing club Range Rules.

The club will have instructors and helpers at each station to guide and instruct you in every way. At the

200 yard range, the club will have a Silhouette Shooting station set-up so you can try and see how many

of them little metal critters you can bring down at different distances. Also at the 200 yard range, we'll

have a station for you to try your mountain man, or woman, ability to shoot a Turkey, paper of course,

Alvin York-style. This event will allow you to learn how to fire a flintlock or percussion cap rifle.

At the “plinking area” we will have a genuine bowling pin tournament shoot with .22s. Down in the Pistol/Small-bore House we'll have a special session to allow the older shooters to participate in the club's practical pistol shooting mindset. We will have some of our NRA-certified instructors walk you through and have you shoot a pistol stage similar to one of our practical pistol events held during the

week.

And last, but certainly not least, for those of you that have always wanted to get out and try Trap shooting,

but either haven't had the time, energy, or equipment, we'll have instructors down at the shotgun range to

let you try some trap shooting of clay pigeons from the electric trap thrower. It’s all in FUN, and to show

you some events the club holds all the time that YOU and yours can be part of. The instructors for each

event will keep tally of the "results" of how everyone did. We will award prizes at the dinner session for

those who did the best "shooting' ", improved the most, had the most fun, or whatever the instructors

come up with.

So come join us for a wonderful BBQ, shooting' arcade, swap meet, door prizes and fun times at this

year’s Bull Roast, Sunday August 21st. Cost for each person, including all the shooting', is $2 per person,

kids under 12 free. Call Gene Adamson (303-971-1531) with any questions.

Budget Discussion

Budget reviewed line by line.

Significant items:

• Budget allocated for range improvements not already spent: new pistol house storage shed for target/stands to alleviate the mess that typically accumulates in front of the benches; gravel/road base for filled area at 25 to 50 yard on pistol range; RSO shed roof repair.

• Budget allocated for Bull Roast and related events. Control costs by asking for RSVP to get approximate head count to avoid over ordering food.

• Minimal budget allocated for annual banquet. Plan to get private room at Country Buffet and have members pay own way to avoid club pre-paying for no shows like in recent year due to un-predictable attendance. Discussed other options such as advanced ticket sales.

• Agree to set aside $5000 annual capitol reserve for future replacement of capitol facilities and equipment such as range buildings, trap and skeet machines etc. Agreement could not be reached on what should already be set in a reserve account for already depreciated structure and equipment.

Motion to approve 2011 budget $46,000. Vote 8 to 1 for. Motion passes. Publish budget in next newsletter.

By-laws revision discussion. Jim to make final changes and schedule a reading to members in time to allow vote at August 21st Bull Roast/members meeting (post meeting update – vote will occur at October membership meeting).

Summer 3-gun

Summer 3-Gun this year will be held on the first and second off-Fridays of the month through October (August 5th and 19th , September 2nd and 16th, and October 14th and 28th). Start time of 3:00 pm with setup starting at 2:30 pm. For those new to 3-gun, it is similar to our Wednesday night practical pistol except we shoot the pistol, shotgun and semi-auto carbine/rifle for a combination of accuracy and speed. Since the Summer 3-Gun runs concurrent to practical pistol, we’ll have a heavier emphasis on the rifle and shotgun. Getting bored sitting at the bench shooting paper targets? Want to develop your action shooting skills, shoot on the move, handle shooting under physical and mental pressure, add new dimensions to your shooting skills, refine and test your shooting gear? Summer 3-gun is the game for you. Shooters of all levels are welcome. Summer 3-Gun’s goals are safety, skill development, fun and challenge. Shooters new to practical action shooting should call ahead to arrange a safety briefing. Contact Walter Tang at 303-977-6474 or email walter.w.tang@ to get on the mailing list. I usually send out the stage description before the shoot so you’ll know what to expect and how much ammo to bring.

Practical Pistol - classic

Every Wednesday night through November 2nd, weather permitting. We will leave the gate area at 4:30 and try to fire first shots at 5:00. Every 4th Wednesday of the month is 22 pistol – no draw from holster – speed drill night. Every 3rd Wednesday one or more stages will be shot with a shotgun.

Events are loosely based on USPSA/IDPA competition matches. Safe gun handling is stressed as it is everywhere on the SHFC range. Shooting from cover, around, over, through concealment, on the move, out of position, weak hand only, strong hand only, reloads, target identification drills, number of shots on target and voice commands are a few of the things covered (usually, not all on the same night!) Expect to shoot around 50 rounds for record each night. For more information call Mike S. 7-3478.

Practical Pistol Ladies Only

Ladies Only group activities started on Monday, June 13th and goes every other Monday thru Sept. Meet at the entrance gate just off Wadsworth by about 4:30pm, then we will caravan up. Remember to bring your “semi-automatic” pistol, holster and 3 magazines, about 100 rounds, your eye and ear protection, pants, layered clothing (never sure about the weather until mid June), hat with a bill, flat soled shoes (no heels or wedgies), minimal jewelry (leave bracelets and other hanging bling in the car). All guests will have a new liability form to sign each visit. Remember to sign in at the RSO shed before going to the Pistol House. This should be a great year. Call Tom Frickell (720-202-6502 cell).

Practical Pistol – Lite

Practical Pistol Lite started Monday, June 6th and goes every other Monday through September. For those of you who are new to Practical Pistol, this affords less experience shooters and opportunity to come out with a group of like-minded shooters and practice defensive skills. As always we will first and foremost focus on range safety. This year we are limiting participation to semi-automatics pistols in the effort to speed up the courses and get more shooting for everyone. Make sure your equipment (Pistol, Holster, Mag pouches) is in good repair and good working order. Carbine and shotgun nights will be less frequent this year to concentrate on pistol shooting and to allow everyone to get in more shooting. We meet at the gate around 4:15, and head to the range no later than 4:30. There has never been a better opportunity to tune your defensive pistol skills, and create a defensive mindset . Remember to sign in at the RSO shed before going to the Pistol House. Call Dave Norris at 303-204-6735 (cell) or Tom Frickell at 303-971-5493, or email at david.w.norris.jr@.

SUper tuesday Competition pistol (STCP)

This event is held every Tuesday night and is more closely aligned with USPSA style competition. However, we also plan to throw in tactical defensive scenarios once in a while to keep everyone on their toes. If you think you are interested in this type of competition contact Brian Sompayrac (brian.w.sompayrac@)

MUZZLE LOADING NEWS & SCORE SHEET

Muzzle Loading News and Score Sheet

The Muzzle Loaders held their monthly shoot on Saturday, 9 July with a start time of 9:00 AM. The next match will be August 13 starting at 9:00. This is a good time to come out and see if that old rifle will shoot before the start of the hunting season. If interested, come on out and shoot. Remember all are welcome, Percussion, Flint, In-line. For additional information, call Ken Ruiz at ext 7-7827.
