Unit 8 ScriptCardiff, the capital city of Wales.Over the years the city has acuminated a vast range of attractions that not only appeal to visitors of all ages but has a continues influence on welsh culture in such areas as fine art, delicacies, performance arts, politics and historical heritage.Today however, we’ll be looking at only one area in particular, that being the performance arts.Everyone knows about the theatre, a place where people where people of all ages go to watch live shows being performed by very talented actors and actresses on stage.Cardiff has three well known iconic theatres that have produced the finest, high quality theatrical production ever seen in Wales.So without further ado, let’s get this show on the road with our Cardiff Theatre tour.We begin with our first stop at Cardiff’s most recognized theatres known as the New Theatre.New TheatresThere were two original theatres that were built in Cardiff during the early 1800s, the first theatre was built in a loft over a stable in 1825.Three years later a second theatre, which named the Theatre Royal was built in Crockerbtown and became quite popular among the local residents.Sadly theatre was struck by a terrible fire in 1877 that completely destroyed the building.Despite the tragedy, the theatre was rebuilt in 1878 at its new location in Wood Street, it was renamed the New Theatre Royal.Which would later shortened to the New Theatre and that is the name of the building standing behind me.Today the New Theatre has become a popular attraction that has shown a large verity of touring plays, musicals, dance recitals and pantomimes from major theatrical companies, including several productions from the East End.With A wide range of all types of plays to offer, the New Theatre is an ideal place to see the most amazing shows ever made.Making this theatre Cardiff’s answer to the London Palladium.Now on to our next stop.Sherman TheatreHere we are at Sherman Theatre, a place that while isn’t over a hundred years has manage to garner praise and recognition for producing the theatrical shows in Cardiff.The Sherman was first built in the year 1973 as a twin-auditorium venue with financial backing from Cardiff University and co-founder of football pools, Harry Sherman.Once the building had been completed, the theatre was named after Mr. Sherman.Between 1990 and 2006 a tv show made by HTV entitled “The Sherman Plays”. Broadcasted plays that been recorded at the theatre.Over the past years the Sherman Theatre has managed to win several theatrical awards for best acting and plays.The awards the Sherman have won include.The Edinburgh Fringe Award and the Herald Angel Award for Deep Cut in 2008.Two Stage Awards for Best New Play and Acting Excellence for Iphigencnia in Spiott in 2015.Additional Sherman also won the Regional Theatre of the Year award, as well as an Oliver Award for their production of Killology in 2018.The Sherman Theatre is another one of Cardiff’s best theatre that continues to entertain generations of audience members, it’s the city’s answer to Broadway.Time to head to our final stop of the tour.Chapter Arts CentreOur final stop takes us just west of the New Theatre to Market Rd, Canton. The home of the Chapter Arts Centre or simply Chapter for short.The centre has a bit of an interesting history to it, the building that would eventually become Chapter was originally a learning establishment from 1905 called Canton High School.Years later in 1971 the building was taken over by two Welsh artists called Christine Kinsey and Bryan Jones and a journalist named Mike Flood.These three would transform the former high school into an art centre, known today as Chapter.Chapter has since become an ideal place for creative groups and independent artists to express themselves. There are two theatres that show a verity of plays and performance that were produced by some very talented and creative minds.Chapter doesn’t just show plays, the centre also has two cinemas that offers a wide range of main stream, independent and foreign films to watch.Chapter also has a café and two bars for visitors and resident artist go and have something to eat and drink, there is also a shop that sell some Chapter merchandise for anyone looking to buy some souvenirs.While it not a traditional theatre, Chapter is another great place to visit and to watch some amazing performances and films.As you can see, Cardiff has a great deal of theatres and venues for anyone to enjoy, so why not play a visit to any of these theatres.You won’t be disappointed. ................
