ERAD is an evidence-based pathway for patients undergoing a cesarean delivery. It involves many aspects of your care (before, during, and after your delivery). It is designed to optimize your care and help you recover as quickly as possible after your delivery. Brigham and Women’s Hospital uses the “ERAD” pathway for all scheduled cesarean deliveries, like yours. What can I do to best prepare for my cesarean delivery? Starting a month prior to your delivery, increase the protein in your diet: We recommend at least 75 grams of protein a dayIncrease your physical activity: We recommend at least 30 minutes of walking a day. Increasing your protein and activity will get your body in the best state for recovery Wash your abdomen: We recommend that you use HIBICLENS (special soap) to wash the area where your incision will be for three showers (1 shower per day for 3 days) prior to your cesarean. You can get HIBICLENS in your pharmacy or order on Amazon. Antibacterial soap such as Dial is also fine to use. Do not apply lotion on the day of your surgery. Get your CLEARFAST: This is a special drink to enhance your body’s healing ability. You need 2 bottles of CLEARFAST to drink the morning of your surgery, which you can buy at the BWH Outpatient Pharmacy (2 bottles for $10) or you can order on Amazon. If you do not have CLEARFAST, you could use Ensure Clear, Ensure PreOp, Gatorade Thirst Quencher or apple juice. If you use Gatorade or apple juice mix it with water. If you are diabetic JUST DRINK WATER. At home on the morning of your cesarean delivery: Stop eating 8 hours prior to surgery Drink your CLEARFAST: Start drinking the first bottle 3 hours before your scheduled surgery time and finish your second bottle by 2 hours before your surgery (which is also the time you are asked to arrive at the hospital). For example, if your cesarean delivery is at 9:30AM you should start drinking the first bottle at 6:30AM and finish both bottles by 7:30AM Do not eat or drink anything after you have finished your CLEARFAST During your cesarean delivery: We will pretreat you with nausea, pain, antacid and antibiotic medication We will minimize the amount of IV fluid you get and keep your blood pressure steady Recovering in the hospital: Start eating and drinking as soon as possible: We will encourage you to eat and drink regular food (even a cup of regular or decaf coffee if you want!) or to chew gum within the first 2 hours after surgery, as this helps your bowel function after surgery Get out of bed: We will encourage you to get out of bed and start sitting in a chair and walking as soon as possible after surgery. ................
