In its fifth year, the workshop offers advanced video production training to military, veterans and government media professionals.This year’s guest speakers include: District 7 Media’s Drew Geraci & Arthur Breese, who recently produced work for the Netflix series, House of CardsBill Gentile, Emmy Award winning filmmaker and film professor at American UniversityLance Ing, news photographer for FOX 5 and the current WHNPA (White House News Photographers Association) Video Editor of The YearArun Chaudhary, VP of Communications at Revolution Messaging and the first official White House videographer in historyBethany Swain, currently on the journalism faculty at The University of Maryland and the first woman to be named Video Photographer of The Year by the WHNPAThe video training workshop starts with a day and a half of guest speakers and panel discussions consisting of award winning filmmakers and industry leaders. Topics include pre-production, lighting, camera techniques, editing and storytelling fundamentals.Immediately after the training seminar, attendees will be divided into several teams and the “Shoot Off” begins. The theme is selected at random from participant suggestions. The teams then have 42 hours to conceive, shoot, edit and produce a short video documentary or feature due on the final day of the event."Each team is assigned a mentor who will guide them through the video production process," workshop producer Juan Femath said. "It's one of the critical elements of the workshop. Participants are given training and mentorship throughout their Shoot Off experience”On the final day of the workshop, the completed projects are screened, judged and compete for the following awards: Editing, Cinematography, Viewer's Choice and Best in Show and Online Competition winner. At the completion of the workshop, all submissions will be uploaded to YouTube. The Viewer's Choice Award will be given to the video with the most combination of views and likes. This year’s prizes include Adobe Creative Suite software and GoPro video cameras.“The success of the Shoot Off depends on the passion of our volunteers and the generosity of our sponsors,” workshop producer Maureen Stewart said. The video workshop is open to all military, civil service, government and veteran media professionals. Registration costs $80 for full participation, or $40 for those wishing only to observe. Observers may attend all training and lectures, but will not produce a competitive video product.The DC Shoot Off Video Workshop is a not-for-profit event hosted by the National Association of Naval Photography.
