Dear Kenmoor Family,

Welcome to the 2016-2017 school year here at Kenmoor Middle School. Our academic program challenges and prepares students to be college and career ready. Our project based

classroom instruction promotes problem solving, higher-order thinking and skill development in

all students while keeping them engaged.  We also offer advanced classes for our highly motivated, well prepared students that earn them high school credits.  Kenmoor Middle School was the first school to receive the Maryland State Department of Education recognition “Excellence in Gifted

and Talented Education” (E-Gate) award and the first school in Maryland to be recertified this year.

Every teacher that stands in front of your child is certified and has high expectations

for your student.  Every student is required to be respectful, well behaved and exercise self-discipline at all times.  Successful students complete two (2) hours of homework, reading and studying every night, attend school daily, are well rested and ready to put forth their best effort.

In 2012-2013 we introduced a new “Positive Behavior Intervention Support” (PBIS) program that rewards students for good grades, regular attendance, respectful attitudes and excellent behavior as well as compliance with the student dress code.  Opportunities abound for the “whole child” at Kenmoor Middle School.  We offer interscholastic sports, and a variety of clubs, as well as a Rose Chapter of the National Junior Honor Society, Student Government Association and Destination Imagination teams.  We host winning debate, science bowl, geography bee, spelling bee, robotics, math hoops and future cities teams.

New sixth, seventh and eighth grade student orientation will take place on Monday, August 22, 2016 this will be a full day of school. This will be a great opportunity for students who are new to Kenmoor to become familiar with the school building, their teachers and their daily schedule.  Any student that brings in PTA membership money (individual is $12 and family is $20) will receive a free Kenmoor agenda book. This initiative will keep going until the 6th of September. After that, students will have to pay for their agenda books at $5 each. It is our hope that everyone supports the PTA this year and becomes an engaged partner. You will receive information by mail about your students’ bus schedule from transportation or you can call 301-952-6570.  The first official day of school for all students will be Tuesday, August 23, 2016.  Our school hours are 9:30 am – 4:10 pm and our doors open at 9:00 am daily for students eating breakfast at which time adult supervision begins.  Breakfast and lunch are served daily at a cost of $1.50 for breakfast and $2.85 for lunch. Please complete the free and reduced lunch applications online or pick up the paper applications from the main office as soon as possible. The county will not provide free lunches to students who have not completed an application. These prices are subject to change. We hope to see you at Back to School Night on September 6, 2016 from 7:00 pm – 9:00 pm. Our fall fundraiser will kick off on August 26, 2016, please support our fundraiser, as our school funds are limited.

I am excited to tell you that Kenmoor has an outdoor classroom, gardens, rain barrels and a stream ecology program to promote environmental literacy skills, which will benefit all of our students. Last year Kenmoor was recognized as a Green school. This year we partnered with Camp Schmidt and North Bay to provide our students with trainings in stream ecology as well as composting and recycling. If you have any particular skills that you can contribute to these projects please contact Ms. Beth Novick, we can always use your expertise.

We believe that every student can be successful at Kenmoor MS and we look forward to working together to ensure the success of our students.

We are great by choice and GRAND by design.

See you soon!

With great anticipation,

Maha Fadli,

Principal
