Research log for FMPWeb searchesPrimary Research I am going to do a questionnaire for primary research to find out things about Secondary research Practitioner ResearchPeople just do nothingInfo about Rob McElhenney and Always Sunny (02/023/17)Robert "Rob" McElhenney (born April 14, 1977) is an American actor, director, producer, and screenwriter. He is best known for playing Mac on the FX/FXX comedy series It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia. He is also one of the developers, executive producers, and the creator of the show, which has provided him with writing and directing credits on various episodes.Review: While I am typically not a fan of television, I can't get enough of It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia. As a resident of Philadelphia and one who enjoys the more scenic and luxurious aspects of life here, 'Sunny' doesn't exactly shine a great light on the city, but it IS without a doubt one of the most brilliant works of ensemble comedy I have ever seen. It's irreverent, self-serving characters without a doubt suggest a bit of a naughty Seifeld. Yet dare I say it, it's more than that. The subtle interplay of class politics, ivy-league pomp, and south-philly street smarts go far beyond Seinfeld's tried-and-true edy on It’s Always Sunny In Philadelphia is filtered through so many layers that adding one more for an episode is exponentially more challenging, for the creators and for us viewers. A hangout comedy where the people hanging out are collectively and individually the worst people in the world makes for humor that, from the outside, can seem like an endorsement of the very thing it’s satirizing. For one thing, the cast and writers of this series—now beginning their 12th season—are astoundingly adept at mining incredibly shitty behavior for laughs that should by all rights have gone stale in a quarter of that time. The Gang, as ever comprised of Sweet Dee, Dennis, Mac, Charlie, and Frank, and played by Kaitlin Olson, Glenn Howerton, Rob McElhenney, Charlie Day, and Danny DeVito, have a Globetrotters level of mastery of shenanigans, crudity, comic violence, and all-around awfulness. My opinionIn my opinion I think that Rob McElhenney is a brilliant writer an actor and writer as well as a great producer and directorMy favourite piece of work that he has done is always sunny in Philadelphia as I think the comedy is simply brilliant and written like nothing I have ever seen before. It really is different from anything I have ever seen before and being on the right level of offensive. As well as contently having something new for the gang to do. I really do take inspiration from Rob because of his unique storylines and characters. I think that the comedy he writes for this show is so funny and it really does appeal to me because you see things in this show what you’d never see in any other TV show because nobody is brave enough to do the things they do and simply without caring. I think he is a really good parishioner to research because of his very interesting scripts and the fact that he literally can do anything in the creative industry, write, act, direct and produce. WorkQualifications/Career McElhenney scored his first major role with a small part in The Devil's Own, followed by small parts in A Civil Action, Wonder Boys, and Thirteen Conversations About One Thing, though his roles in The Devil's Own and Wonder Boys were cut out of the final edits. He later had more substantial parts in Latter Days and The Tollbooth, and a small role in the Law & Order episode "Thrill". At the age of 21, a debut script by McElhenney was optioned with writer-director Paul Schrader attached to direct, before the project fell through after one year of edits and rewrites.Initially based in New York City after his graduation from high school, McElhenney moved to Los Angeles at the age of 22. In 2004, McElhenney was waiting tables between acting jobs when his idea for a sitcom was pitched to many cable networks. After receiving offers from many of the stations, McElhenney chose to sign with FX as they allowed him more creative freedom. McElhenney was contracted as It's Always Sunnys showrunner. He met Glenn Howerton through his agent, and Charlie Day in New York while shooting a horror film. Both Howerton and Day were listed as executive producers.McElhenney claims that 50 weeks of each year are consumed by acting, producing, and writing for the show, but he did find time to appear in the third season of Lost in the episode "Not in Portland". This was a result of McElhenney meeting Lost co-creator and executive producer Damon Lindelof, who is a fan of It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia. McElhenney continued the role in Lost, featured again in the sixth season for a single episode. Rob is a fan of Game of Thrones and was thrilled that the series' writers asked to write an episode of It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia. He and his co-producers accepted the offer. The episode was called "Flowers for Charlie" and can be found in season 9 of the show.On July 21, 2015, McElhenney was confirmed by Mojang as the director of the upcoming Minecraft movie. Research CHRISTINE ROBERTSON Agent: Christina Pickworth christina@imaginetalent.co.ukChristine’s first script won the Funny Women Comedy Writing Award in 2011. She has since worked in the writers’ room for series five and six of Trollied, had a comedy feature shortlisted for iFeatures and been selected for BBC Writersroom’s 2015/16 Comedy Room. She was recently commissioned to write sketches for David Walliams and Tracey Ullman, and is currently being mentored by AndyThe Heist. This short film based on two men who decide to rob a Jewry warehouse and get the wrong warehouse. This film is Competition for me because it is about a robbery, which my pilot will also be. The strong points of this film was the scripting and the camera shots. The scripting was funny and thought through well. Especially with the use of awkward silences and name-calling. In addition, I really liked then shaky shots throughout even though sometimes they were very, very noticeable the previous winners of this festival (01/03/17)TearawayThis short film was about a girl who does competive running with an over active imagination. And her couch says that she is distracted and wont win if she continues and because of this no longer wants to be her couch. But on race day she concentrates and wins the race proving her couch wrong. I think that the message that this short films is really clear and would help inspire anyone to achieve their goals. audience Research demographic (01/03/17)Always sunny in Philadelphia I want to make my show predominantly a male audience, as I will find it easier to appeal to them seeing as I am one myself and because of my age I will probably try to appeal my age and possibly a bit older so I am thinking ages 18 to 25, this is because I could find it easier to make a comedy for my own age rather than people a lot older than me. Always sunny is also a very left wing show because of the humour and how the characters are as people. I feel like if I was to be make this show kind of left wing as well I could appeal to a similar audience.InbetweenersThis show also appeals to a predominantly male audience and is left wing just like Always Sunny but not as left wing. But it does not really appeal to my target audience according to YouGov. However, I do understand the humour, which is in the show, and it follows a similar style of show as Always Sunny. Brooklyn Nine-NineBrooklyn Nine-Nine is one of my favourite comedies on TV. The characters are hilarious and relatable for everyone and every episode is different and always so funny. The Show is also very left wing and appeals to the same sort of target audiences that I am looking for. (02/023/17) and ethical issues related to your ideaThe language surrounding disability used within mainstream media is often still negative. This is especially true regarding hidden impairments, possibly due to a lack of understanding. When dealing with mental and learning disabilities, the media often uses very strong negative language. One example of this (amongst many) was a March 2006 article in The Sun, reporting on a dyslexic postman. The article used the following words "fool", "barmy" and "struggling", and included two separate quotes stating that the dyslexic postman "can't read" and "can't read properly", despite the postman himself saying earlier in the article that he can read, but has difficulties with certain combinations of numbers. Ethically, this is quite damaging and has strong implications for dyslexic people. The Sun has a very wide readership, and language such as this presents a false, negative image of dyslexics to a very large number of people. Research (02/023/17)What is the watershed?Protecting children from harmful material on TV and radio is one of Ofcom’s most important duties. Our Broadcasting Code sets standards for television and radio shows and broadcasters must follow its rules. There are strict rules about what can be shown on TV before the 9pm watershed. But what exactly is the watershed and how does it work? The watershed means the time when TV programmes, which might be unsuitable for children, can be broadcast. When is it?The watershed begins at 9pm and material unsuitable for children should not, in general, be shown before 9pm or after 5.30am.What do you mean by unsuitable material?Unsuitable material can include everything from sexual content to violence, graphic or distressing imagery and swearing. For example, the most offensive language must not be broadcast before the watershed on TV or, on radio, when children are particularly likely to be listening. Frequent use of offensive language must be avoided before the watershed, and must always be justified by its context. Can TV channels show whatever they like after 9pm?No. The transition to more adult material must not be unduly abrupt and the strongest material should appear later in the evening. But even then Ofcom’s rules protect viewers from offensive and harmful content. What happens if broadcasters break the rules?Since 2003 Ofcom has taken action on more than 300 occasions when broadcasters have scheduled unsuitable content before or immediately after the watershed. In two recent cases inappropriate music videos — including Rihanna’s S&M — were shown early in the afternoon.Does the watershed still matter? The watershed continues to help parents protect their children from material that might be unsuitable or even harmful for them.Twice a year, every year, we ask parents and the wider general public what they think about standards on TV. Almost everyone (93 per cent) understands the watershed and 74 per cent think 9pm is the right time. If you just ask parents, that number rises to 76 per cent.Research (02/023/17)Concepts, ideas and topics related to your idea OCDIf you have OCD, you'll usually experience frequent obsessive thoughts and compulsive behaviours. An obsession is an unwanted and unpleasant thought, image or urge that repeatedly enters your mind, causing feelings of anxiety, disgust or unease.A compulsion is a repetitive behaviour or mental act that you feel you need to carry out to try to temporarily relieve the unpleasant feelings brought on by the obsessive thought. For example, someone with an obsessive fear of their house being burgled may feel they need to check all the windows and doors are locked several times before they can leave the house.Very good outline of what the condition does to someone.Choices, N. (2016) Obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD). Available at: (Accessed: 1 March 2017).2.At 15, I started experiencing intrusive thoughts like this. They were quite mild at first - but now I get them frequently. They are my ‘obsessions’ - the more you try to forget what you’re thinking, the more they appear in your mind.I started doing rituals to try to get rid of these thoughts - my ‘compulsions’. I had no awareness of what was going on. I spent years thinking I was some kind of horrific serial killer who just hadn’t been caught by the police yet.As I got older, I began believing that my family and friends would get harmed if I didn’t do something ‘right’.A childhood fear of rejection, and that fear of contamination, led to me feeling like I had control over anything in my life.I thought being skinnier would solve my all problems and help get back the feeling of control I desperately wanted. In fact it made things a million times worse. I restricted my food intake massively and began exercising at every opportunity. And I started spending less time with the people I liked, because I was scared I would do harm – hurting someone is my worst nightmare, so that’s what my OCD revolved around. My compulsions became weirder and more frequent. Trying to write was the absolute worst. I would constantly write and rewrite notes until they looked ‘right’. My various compulsions included avoiding cracks in pavements, repetitively counting tiles, buttons and lines, walking on the side closest to the traffic, checking the news 3 times a day, making sure things are ordered symmetrically on my desk and hand sanitising after touching pretty much anything… By 19 I was, at last, diagnosed with OCD.Anyone who says that having OCD is ‘helpful’ couldn’t be further from the truth. I may spend hours cleaning dishes and making sure my things are organised/symmetrical - but when will any of these compulsions benefit me? NEVER. I do these compulsions because if I don’t, I truly believe my family and or friends will be hurt in some way.Charlotte (2013) Mind, the mental health charity - help for mental health problems. Dennis also has an extreme temper (most notable in later seasons) and will blow up in rage whenever his image is called into question, he doesn't get what he wants, or just plain gets irritated’Dennis has chronic feelings of emptiness that distress him and cause problems in his interpersonal relationships ("Charlie's Mom Has Cancer"). He states that he combats this (dubbing it his 'God hole') by having sex with a lot of women. ("Sweet Dee Gets Audited")Dennis has a scheme in which he manipulates women into having sex with him, scaring them and threatening them, and having sex with them again only to leave them once again. ("The D.E.N.N.I.S. System").Dennis insults and demeans his friends on a regular basis, particularly Dee and Charlie, and never hesitates to draw attention to their flaws, shortcomings, and past failures while remaining oblivious to—or rather in denial of—his own. When Dennis was 14, he had sex with his 50 year old librarian. Dee correctly identifies this as rape, but Dennis is in denial about the whole thing saying that you cannot rape a man. ("Dee Made a Smut Film") This has some unfortunate-in-hindsight implications due to Dennis in an earlier episode saying that he has not had feelings since he was 14. ("Mac Fights Gay Marriage")He earned good grades at the University of Pennsylvania and minored in psychology ("Charlie Got Molested"), though his original ambition was to become a veterinarian ("Dennis and Dee Go on Welfare"). Later on Dee suggests he wanted to be a veterinarian so he could keep the skins and he does not deny this. ("Frank Falls Out the Window") However, he does seem to sometimes like cats as he had a cat as a child and showed fondness for Agent Jack Bauer (a cat he found in a dumpster). ("Dee Made a Smut Film") ("Bums: Making a Mess All Over the City") He has no problem suggesting that Dee let her cat die in a wall rather than rescuing it so she would pay attention to him, so clearly his views on them are situational. ("Mac and Dennis Break Up") MorganDexter Morgan is the titular character and antihero of both Showtime's DEXTER and the Dexter Book Series. Until he faked his own death and resorted to isolation, Dexter was a Serial Killer that went after other killers (to control his "Dark Passenger"), rather than harming innocent people. By day, he was a blood spatter analyst within the Miami Metro Police Department, working closely with the detectives and other forensic specialists, while maintaining a jovial personality. He is the biological son of a stripper and Joe Driscoll and the biological brother of Brian Moser who was also known as the The Ice Truck Killer.Dexter was the husband of Rita Bennett (who was the mother of his child), the adoptive brother of Lieutenant Debra Morgan, and the adoptive son of Doris and Harry Morgan, the police-detective who taught Dexter a legitimate code to operate under and survive with (however, it was revealed in Season 8 that Dr. Evelyn Vogel partook in this) his urges."My name is Dexter. Dexter Morgan. I don't know what made me the way I am, but whatever it was left a... hollow place inside. People fake a lot of human interactions, but I feel like I've faked them all and I fake them very well. And that's my burden, I guess."Dexter suffered from schizoid personality disorder, which was evident throughout the series. Dexter seemed to consider himself emotionally separated from humanity. In his narration, he often referred to "humans" as if he was not one of them. Dexter made frequent references to an internal feeling of emptiness. In his youth, this lead to many attempts to "feel alive" (this was shown much more in the show than in the books). Dexter claimed to have no feelings or conscience. He thought his emotional responses were part of a well-rehearsed act to conceal his true nature (which was later revealed to be incorrect). He had no interest in romance or sex. He often considered his relationship with Rita to be part of his "disguise". In the show, he showed considerably more attachment and fondness for Rita than in the books. For example, in the first season, he was afraid to have sex with her because he might lose her as a result. In the books he seemed to view her more as a pet. There are chinks in Dexter's emotional armour. He acknowledged loyalty to his family, particularly to his dead adoptive father; "If I were capable of love, how I would have loved Harry." After Harry's death, Dexter's only family was his sister, Debra Morgan, Harry's biological daughter, who was always there to "enlighten" Dexter's human side. When he lost her in The Finale, he became emotionally desolate and he even faked his own death to prevent himself from "harming" others around him. This showed that Dexter may have retained much of his humanity, as he was willing to mercifully kill his sister and expressed empathy, unlike what Dr. Vogel was alleging. Further, he used his remaining vitality to contribute to the world and create a livelihood for himself. At the end of the first novel, Dexter admitted that he couldn't harm Debra (something that was followed in the television series). In one episode, he comically repeated in his head "I will not kill my sister" (as she regularly left his apartment a mess when living with him). Dexter wouldn't allow Brian to harm Debra, as Dexter was "fond of her." He also appeared to care more for Rita than he admitted.Schizoid personality disorder (SPD) is a personality disorder characterized by a lack of interest in social relationships, a tendency towards a solitary or sheltered lifestyle, secretiveness, emotional coldness, and apathy.A person with this disorder may appear to lack a desire for intimacy, and will avoid close relationships with others. They may often prefer to spend time with themselves rather than socialize or be in a group of people. In laypeople terms, a person with schizoid personality disorder might be thought of as the typical “loner.”Neither desires nor enjoys close relationships, including being part of a familyAlmost always chooses solitary activitiesHas little, if any, interest in having sexual experiences with another personTakes pleasure in few, if any, activitiesLacks close friends or confidants other than first-degree relativesAppears indifferent to the praise or criticism of othersShows emotional coldness, detachment, or flattened affect (emotion)Researchers today don’t know what causes schizoid personality disorder. There are many theories, however, about the possible causes of schizoid personality disorder. Most professionals subscribe to a biopsychosocial model of causation — that is, the causes of are likely due to biological and genetic factors, social factors (such as how a person interacts in their early development with their family and friends and other children), and psychological factors (the individual’s personality and temperament, shaped by their environment and learned coping skills to deal with stress). This suggests that no single factor is responsible — rather, it is the complex and likely intertwined nature of all three factors that are important. If a person has this personality disorder, research suggests that there is a slightly increased risk for this disorder to be “passed down” to their children.A key difference between a psychopath and a sociopath is whether he has a conscience, the little voice inside that lets us know when we’re doing something wrong, says L. Michael Tompkins, EdD. He is a psychologist at the Sacramento County Mental Health Treatment Centre.A psychopath doesn’t have a conscience. If he lies to you so he can steal your money, he won’t feel any moral qualms, though he may pretend to. He may observe others and then act the way they do so he’s not “found out,” Tompkins says.A sociopath typically has a conscience, but it’s weak. He may know that taking your money is wrong, and he might feel some guilt or remorse, but that will not stop his behaviour.AlcoholismAlcoholism is the most serious form of problem drinking, and describes a strong, often uncontrollable, desire to drink. Sufferers of alcoholism will often place drinking above all other obligations, including work and family, and may build up a physical tolerance or experience withdrawal symptoms if they stop.SymptomsIt can be tricky to spot the signs of alcoholism as alcoholics can be secretive about it and can become angry if confronted. However, if someone close to you is showing any of the following signs, it may be that they’re suffering from alcoholism: A lack of interest in previously normal activities Appearing intoxicated more regularlyNeeding to drink more in order to achieve the same effects Appearing tired, unwell or irritableAn inability to say no to alcoholAnxiety, depression or other mental health problemsBecoming secretive or dishonest technical requirements of the project Research camera Arri Alexa XT Plus 4:3 Camera The ALEXA XT Plus (XT = Xtended Technology) is the most versatile and flexible of the ALEXA XT camera range, and thus a true allrounder. The latest Final Cut Pro release also takes full advantage of the new MacBook Pro with support for the Touch Bar and wide colour workflows. For editor Thomas Grove Carter, the biggest change has been the arrival of Final Cut Pro 10.3. Having brought Final Cut Pro X to Trim years ago, Thomas was eager to use this latest version of his preferred editing tool. His test drive was on a challenging Audi assignment, a spot called “Everyday Extremes”, that demanded complex sound design and smooth visual transitions. The new Final Cut Pro exceeded his high expectations, allowing him to turn his ideas into new cuts faster than ever before. In addition to the big changes in Final Cut Pro 10.3, the update includes many editing refinements that help Thomas move faster through his projects. When trying new ideas or fine-tuning cuts, he can now roll trim on adjacent connected clips and use the handy Trim Start and Trim End commands on multiple clips at once. Thomas often applies colour correction and effects while editing, and the new option to Remove Attributes provides a fast way — and a simple interface — for him to selectively delete unwanted elements. issuesResearch equipment. It does its job, the footprint is very small and it packs up quickly. I bought this mic since with my job I film run and gun most of the time and it works fine when I have to boom it up for an interview, so long as it is very close (it tends to pick up a bit of room noise). The resulting files are usually a little weak and do need some work in post to make them their best. Love the price in case I break it or it gets squashed in transit, etc... The low cut is a nice feature to for such a cheap item. Rode's mics are superior, but for my purposes this is just fine.2)Definitely a B Cam/backup mic. The sound quality isn't great, picks up a lot of low frequencies. Should be okay for most event work but not so much for anything where you want the best sound possible. I suppose if you're looking in this price range though, the budget is limited. I got it because I needed it for my 2nd shooter for weddings. I have a Rode Videomic Pro but didn't want to dish out +$200 on another one that would only be used every once in awhile.Evaluation I think that this would be a half decent mic to get seeing as it is quite cheap and seems to do the job, however being quite cheap it is not the best and if I want my work to be high quality then I might want to think about picking up a higher quality one. Is this overkill for an action camera - absolutely! But I decided to go with the old "buy nice or buy twice" on this one since I also plan on using the GoPro as an additional camera for vlogging so recording good voice audio was one of the purchase criteria. I initially wanted to budget no more than $100 for a good mic which had me deciding between the Rode VideoMicro and VideoMic GO as well as similar competitor models. I liked the fact that those two do not require battery power (versus the Pro requiring a 9V battery) and the simplicity of use (no power switch as the mic is powered by the camera once it's plugged into the 3.5mm jack or mini-USB adapter). But the fact that this microphone is highly regarded by so many videographers, I felt like it could serve me well on many other future platforms and not just on the GoPro. I listened to comparisons between the three Rode microphones and the Pro sounds noticeably less noisy. Voice audio recordings also sound more natural and less harsh on the ears even at high volumes.Regardless of the platform, this product functions very well at capturing audio and is very well constructed although removal of the battery door for the first time can have you second guessing if you're opening it correctly!2) Really wasn't expecting much when I ordered this mic. I knew it would be slightly better than the stock mic on the iPhone 6, but I will say I was pleasantly surprised at how much the sound improved when using this. Initially I needed it for a specific video I was making, but have since used it several times and it continues to impress. The package that it came in is very nice. I've kept it as storage for when I'm not using the mic. Included is the mic, the wind cover, and the plastic stabilizer for the mic, as well as the instructions. The best part about this is you really only need to plug it in and that's it! Once plugged in, the iPhone picks up its sound through the mic and you're good to go.I did several A/B tests on the same subjects with and without the mic and the wind cover and I will say, you can DEFINITELY tell a huge difference when using the mic. Most of my work is done indoors, but the wind cover still helps with smoothing out peoples voices.Evaluation:After looking at this mic and the other one I feel like if I was going to buy one it should be this once, the reviews and features seem to be better and even though it is more expensive I think that the money will be worth it as the quality of the mic does seem to be better and I have previous experience with this mic because someone I know use to blog with it so I know for a fact that it is very good and does everything I need a mic to do. Cost of travel. The cost of travel would be the actors who come to the set, which will probably be in my house. In Sampford Peverell it is very easy to get to my house from Tiverton parkway, the train station along the main line to London Paddington. The cost of the train is ?5.60 and at most, I would have to pay that 4/5 times. Therefore, that would be ?28. I do not know about any other sets but I will try make sure they are in Exeter so I do not have to pay much to go to them and keep production as cheap as possible. Camera’s and tripodI will not have to pay anything towards camera or tripod because I plan to use my own. The camera is a…… and is good quality. I filmed my last FMP with it and I was very happy with the shots. However it is not the best and if I am not happy with the test shots I do with it I will be asking to borrow my friends because I know that, he has very high quality camera and the quality is defiantly of a professional standard. Even if I use my friend’s camera, I will be using my tripod because it will work with his camera too. CastingI think that casting might be a slight problem for me. As I am mainly looking for slightly older actors (around 20-23) I think that it might be slightly harder to find actors because at that age they might want to be paid and for a college student with no job it might be hard to do that. I also have to worry about people being able to make it to production on the same days, which might be difficult as well. EvolutionMy research has helped shaped my project in many ways. The first being the characters and there personalities which I managed to shape around the research I did for mental disorders. I think that the research I did for the mental disorders was the best I did, as it was probably the most important to my project as it is all about their personalities and how they treat other people. With more time I probably could of done more research into more practitioners as I only did one or two. ................
