From box office bombs (Once Upon a Time) to record blockbusters (Wolf Warrior 2), it's been an eventful year for domestic movies in China. Here, we round out some of the best films of 2017.Duckweed (Han Han)The third feature film by the writer and the new media icon Han Han Han is the best yet, associating a moving, family-oriented story with a Back-to-the-Future-esque plot device. Racing driver Lang (Deng Chao) has a strained relationship with his father, but after getting into an accident that shakes him back in time until 1998, he meets and befriends a younger version of the man (Eddie Peng), and earns respect for him as he learns the context behind his tumultuous life as a small town gangster. The film has a 93 percent rating on Rotten Tomatoes and was praised for its authentic representation of rural China in the 90s. The legend of the Demon Cat (Chen Kaige) acclaimed director of Farewell My Concubine has turned behind the lens for this lush film and fantastic mystery. Set during the Tang Dynasty and based on a novel by author Yumemekura Baku, it tells the story of a Chinese poet and Japanese monk who teams up to investigate the mysterious death of a famous concubine. Chen spent five and millions of RMB building an entire city with real rivers, palaces and caves for the film, and rumors told them that the set would be turned into a theme park and open to the public. Our time will come from (Ann Hui) widely hailed as one of the best Chinese films of the year, Our time will come offering a fresh perspective on the often-told story of the Japanese occupation of World War II in China, focusing on female characters, such as the protagonist Fang Lan (Zhou Xun), a real-life teacher-turned-resistance fighter. Fang has become active in underground in Hong Kong after her friend decided to work with the Japanese, and director Ann Hui brings her story to the big screen with intrigue and a lot of thrilling suspense scenes. The film also stars Eddie Peng as Fang's leader of resistance/love interest and Deanie Ip as her The most recent film by the famous filmmaker Feng Xiaogang (I Am Not Madam Bovary) is a story about teenage performers in a provincial military cultural band in the 1970s. Based on a work by Shanghai novelist Yan Geling, the story focuses on He Xiaoping (Miao Miao), an idealistic dancer from Beijing who hides a dark family history. The youth was called a sweeping wonder by the Toronto Film Festival and was praised for its elegant cinema and moving story. The film spent its fall screening at film festivals from Toronto to Pingyao, and opened in domestic cinemas after several delays in December. Angels Wear White in a seaside motel in Xiamen, a receptionist (played by actress Vicky Chen, 15, is a rising star) assists a leading local official who is staying in a room with two preteen girls. What follows is an unwavering portrait of the aftermath of sexual assault, from the victims' guilt to politically motivated cover-ups. Beautifully shot and tackling a highly opportune topic, the film saw its limited release in China earlier this year and screened at several film festivals, winning both best film and best actress (for Vicky Chen) at the Turkey Antalya Film Festival in October. Paths of the Soul a (Zhang Yang) This indie docu-road drama film from Beijing director Zhang Yang follows 11 religious pilgrims as they walk for seven months from their hometown to Lhasa, stopping to worship every few steps. Acclaimed for both its piercing story and its striking cinema, the film offers a fictional account of the pilgrimage, chronicling a birth, death, romance in the making and much more along the way. Although it was released in 2015, Paths of the Soul spent over a year at film festivals around the world and presenting in a MoMA exhibition in New York before finally securing an internal release date in China in June this year. Dahhufa (Bu Sifan)A highlight of the year in Chinese animation, Dahhufa is a surreal and exceptionally dark film about a prince trying to free a dystopian village called Peasanttown from his oppressive masters. Baked with social comments (so much so that many critics expressed surprise that the film received approval for release in China), Dahhufa made headlines when its producer announced a self-imposed PG-13 rating because of scenes of shocking violence - the government of Pooltown routinely executes its citizens to quell dissent. Dahhufa was largely funded by the crowd and its wryly slogan proclaims: Thanks for the adversity that everyone brought me. The Thousand Themes of Dunjia (Yuen Wo Ping with Tsui Hark)Directed by the acclaimed action choreographer Yuen Wo Ping (who choreographed Matrix, Kill Bill and Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon) and with a screenplay by the famous Hong Kong film author Tsui Hark, this fantastic bombastic film aims to revitalize the wuxia genre with cutting-edge special effects and a healthy dose of the supernatural. Based on Qimen Dunjia, an old the practice of divination and astrology, the film focuses on a group of martial artists who must save the world from a wicked mystical force. Also, it may or may not be group sex with demons. The Foreigner (Martin Campbell)This buzzed-out Chinese-UK co-production showcases as the chop of Jackie Chan in one of his first-ever dramatic roles. Chan plays a Vietnamese immigrant from London who hunts a group of Irish terrorists after their attack, which kills his daughter. The 10th highest-grossing film of the year in China, The Foreigner also stars Pierce Brosnan and Katie Leung, who Harry Potter fans will recognize as Cho Chang. Film detractors complain that the plot is worded and a little too similar to that of Liam Neeson, but Chan's captivating performance as a grieving, quiet father has been cheered. This is not what I expected (Xu Hongyu)Although domestically-produced romantic comedies may be too saccharine, this elegant love story about a weird and brooding billionaire who falls in love with her through her cooking is nothing short of charming. You've got the Mail-esque story sees a hotel tycoon (played by Takashi Kanenshiro) have several sick-fted encounters on the street with a naughty and high-spirited woman (Zhou Dongyu) before realizing her true identity. While Zhou is playing the slapstick up little too far at times and some of the veer plot points in unrealistic territory, this is not what I expected shines as one of the best Chinese rom-coms of the year.
