Meals

A Bryant Pond staff member will serve as the Dining Hall Host to make sure the meals run smoothly. Teachers and chaperones are asked to sit with students and help serve food. There must be at least one adult at each table of students.

Meals at Bryant Pond are served family style. Adults are asked to serve the students a balanced meal with reasonable serving sizes. We ask that everyone waits to eat until all table members are served and that desert is only eaten after everyone is finished with their meals. Please remind students that seconds will be available but it is important for everyone to have time to finish their first servings before asking for seconds, including you!

At the end of the meals adults and staff will ask the students to pass their plates to the head of the table for garbage and compost separation. Adults are responsible for clearing the table of all the leftover food and dishes. Please make sure the tables have been whiped down once the meal is over. Students should not be allowed to get up during the meal unless there is a bathroom emergency.

Our cooks work hard to serve healthy, hearty, home cooked meals. We encourage everyone to try two bites of everything on the table and to drink lots of water. It is important to us that students eat a healthy meal before being allow to partake in desert. A well balanced meal will give students the energy they need to have a successful day.

For many students, sitting down family style is something reserved for special occasions. Please make this a positive learning experience by encouraging good manners and quiet conversation. You might ask the students to share their favorite activity, amusing stories, or animal sightings.

Bunkhouses

The Bryant Pond boy’s and girl’s bunkhouses are rustic, but they do have wood heat, bathrooms and electricity.

We ask the following of bunkhouses/learning group chaperones:

• Never leave students unattended in bunkhouses.

• As necessary, remind students of the rules and expectations set up by you and the Lakeside Classroom staff.

• Please refrain from yelling, telling scary stories, playing pranks, or allowing the students to do so. This does not foster the safe environment that students need while away from home.

• Make sure students remain in the bunkhouses once they have returned from the

evening programs.

• Alert the overnight contact person in the event of any emergency situation using the Emergency Cell Phone (207) 890-8627.

• Help students do a thorough job of cleaning when they leave and check to make sure that no one has left any personal belongings in the bathrooms, under the beds or under the mattresses.

• We ask that students travel with a buddy at all times. Adults should never be alone with one child; always travel as a group of three.

Lakeside Classroom Programs immerse students in a variety of fun-filled, discovery-oriented adventures in the outdoors. Students learn the basic laws of ecology and are challenged to apply their understanding of these concepts in the freshwater and forest ecosystems. Students work cooperatively in group situations to develop life skills, a sense of community, and an awareness of their connections to the natural world.

Teachers and chaperones play a vital role in the success of the Lakeside Classroom. Throughout their stay at Bryant Pond, adults interact with students in a variety of ways, ranging from learning alongside students on the trail to sleeping in the Bunkhouses for overnight supervision.

The classroom teacher will communicate any medical needs or issues to the Lakeside Classroom Coordinator prior to arriving at camp. The information will then be passed on to other Bryant Pond staff on a confidential basis.

Supervision of Children
