PROFESSIONAL POSITION DESCRIPTION Position Title: Coordinator of Tutoring ServicesDivision: Academic AffairsDepartment: Learning SupportLocation:Office on the Portland campus with expectation of work/service in Gorham and LACSchedule: Regular, full time, with nights and weekends as required Reports to: Director of Academic Retention InitiativesSTATEMENT OF THE JOB: This position provides coordination of tutoring services under the direction of the Director of Academic Retention Initiatives. This entails the hiring, training, and supervision of at least 50 student employees who provide tutoring services in the areas of writing, math, English for Speakers of Other Languages, technology, and other academic disciplines. Tutoring and other academic support services are integrated into a collaborative model at The Learning Commons, with tutors and Reference Librarians taking a team approach to meeting the needs of students. Building and sustaining partnerships throughout the institution is an embedded philosophical operating approach in this position. Outreach and the building of partnerships are also significant duties of the job, with a focus upon expanding student access and availability to academic support within numerous academic disciplines. With the prominence of technology in learning environments, a focus of this position is the innovative applications of technology platforms that assist students with completing academic tasks and managing their academic lives. The design and delivery of workshops, passive programming, and online resources is also a priority.ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: Manage day-to-day operations of the tutoring service at The Learning CommonsCoordinate the Tutor Training Program in accordance with the guidelines and requirements of the College Reading & Learning Association (CRLA) International Tutor Training Program Certification (ITTPC)Develop and coordinate other academic assistance programs and resources, based upon the ongoing assessment of students’ needsAssist the Director with the assessment and reporting of all Learning Commons programs through data collecting, survey administration, and focus groupsCoordinate tutoring services for writing, math, ESOL, technology, and other disciplines as appropriateCollaborate with the English for Speakers of Other Languages program in developing and implementing learning support programmingRecruit, hire, and train student employees to serve in the roles of tutors, desk workers, and learning assistantsWork with individual students to help them assess current learning strategies, implement new ones, and connect with other University resourcesCoordinate the implementation and maintenance of the online tutoring and appointment scheduling platformPartner and coordinate with the University Libraries in the operation of The Learning Commons, including the programming of services and daily operations Explore learning-enhancing technologies and partner with others at USM involved with academic application of technology; incorporate appropriate technologies into the Learning Commons physical space and programmingDevelop online academic assistance resources and programsBuild campus partnerships with faculty, academic departments, and other campus entitiesCoordinate Learning Commons tours for admission, other institutions, and professional organizationsCoordinate learning support services among all Learning Commons locationsInvestigate best practices and leading-edge thinking on student learning assistance and learning commons models; propose new strategies, services, and technologies as appropriateCoordinate with the Lewiston-Auburn Campus around the delivery of effective and consistent learning assistance Visit classrooms, student organizations, and other student programs to deliver outreach programs related to academic assistance and achievement Coordinate and implement the marketing of Learning Commons to new and returning students, faculty, and staffRepresent The Learning Commons at University events such as Accepted Students Day and OrientationDevelop and maintain the website for The Learning Commons in partnership with the Gorham campus Coordinator of The Learning CommonsAdditional duties as reasonably assignedSPECIAL ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS/RESPONSIBILITIES*: Broad access, including but not limited to master key or swipe card access, to University facilities, residences, or apartmentsDirect responsibility for safety and security of employees, students, minors, and/or visitors or propertyAbility to provide own transportation (fully-insured vehicle), provide proof of a valid driver’s license, and compliance with Maine law regarding vehicle insuranceSUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES: This position will supervise at least 50 student tutors formally employed by The Learning Commons, as well as other student employees. This includes, but is not limited to, serving as the search chair for hiring, recommending people for hire, conducting performance evaluations, approving weekly work hours, having authority to discipline and assign work, providing orientation and support, and providing support to utilize professional development resources.BUDGET RESPONSIBILITIES:Submit expenditure requests for the upcoming yearMonitor and approve student employee earningsPUBLIC AND PROFESSIONAL ACTIVITIES RELATED TO JOB PERFORMANCE:Maintain membership in appropriate state, regional, and national professional organizationsMaintain professional developmentParticipate in campus efforts to increase student success and persistenceINTERNAL AND EXTERNAL CONTACTS:(see “Organizational Relationships”)KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:Expertise in issues related to learning, academic achievement, human development, and initiatives that support persistence towards graduationExperience with the delivery of tutoring and other academic support services to a diverse student populationAbility to work independently and exercise good judgmentAbility to teach at the undergraduate levelExcellent communication skills including written and oral communicationQUALIFICATIONS:Required:Master’s Degree in a related field and 2 years of relevant experience in an academic environment, or equivalent combination of education and experienceStrong management skills and ability to work effectively with students, faculty, and staffPreferred:Experience coordinating a tutoring function within a higher education institution, or with programs that promote academic successStrong group facilitation skillsStrong computer skills including word processing, spreadsheets, and other pertinent applications Demonstrated proficiency with learning new technologies Web development experience*NOTE: All individuals who are recommended to fill and subsequently offered a position with special essential responsibilities as listed above, or other licensure or certification, shall have the following additional applicable background screening completed (in addition to regular and standard background screening) based on the responsibilities of the position: Credit history screening, and/or Sex offender registry screening, and/or Federal criminal history screening and/or License/certification verification.
