PART ONE:

SYNTHETIC PHONICS 1:

A synthetic phonics approach on how to teach to read and write.

ABSTRACT:

Synthetic Phonics is a thorough foundation for reading and writing. It teaches the 42 letter sounds in an enjoyable, multi-sensory way, and enables children to use them to read and write words. Children learn to identify the letter sounds in words, then blend them and spell them.

Who should attend:

Primary English teachers for the lower forms. Ideal for the teacher who wants to make sure they are getting the most out of the programme or those new to Jolly Phonics.

Course outline:

This training course provides background advice for teachers. It explains the principles behind Synthetic Phonics so that your understanding of the teaching, and your ability to help a child, is much greater. You will be taken through sample lessons and demonstrations of real classroom scenarios. It is a step by step course on how to apply the programme and get the children read fluently, clearly and with good pronunciation.

Course content:

This introductory course takes you step-by-step through a phonics lesson and the 5 key skills of the programme: learning the letter sounds, letter formation, blending, identifying the sounds in words and tricky words. Practical ideas and activities are shown that can be used in class. Strategies for helping the struggling child will also be discussed. A first year timetable is also covered, showing the pace at which Jolly Phonics should be taught.

Even though this course is based on Jolly Phonics, other phonics programmes will be discussed in order to analyse the best one to be adopted by the school to cover its Literacy curriculum.

PART TWO:

SYNTHETIC PHONICS 2:

Developing Synthetic Phonics, Reading, Writing and Jolly Grammar.

Who should attend:

This course is for the teacher who has been using a Jolly Phonics/Synthetic Phonics approach successfully for a while or has attended the Jolly Phonics 1/Synthetic Phonics 1. Ideal for Year 1, 2 and 3 teachers.

Course outline:

The Developing Synthetic Phonics, Reading, Writing and Jolly Grammar course is intended to reinforce the teaching of Synthetic Phonics, the understanding and application of Shared, Guided and Independent reading as well as Shared, Guided and Independent Writing. and will take teachers through the principles of Jolly Grammar and how to follow on from the first phases of synthetic Phonics.. You will be taken through sample lessons and demonstrations of real classroom scenarios. It is a step by step course on how to apply the programme and make the best of it.

Course Content:

To develop Phonics through exploring in more details the teaching of synthetic phonics reinforcing its teaching practice, and learn about the grammar programme and how it follows on from the first phases of Phonics. You will be shown how you can continue to develop children’s phonic knowledge enabling them to improve their vocabulary and comprehension into Year 2. This course introduces key elements of grammar, punctuation, spelling rules, (short vowels) as well as revision and extension of phonics.

You will be taken through lesson guides, structure and pace of teaching. Ideas and strategies for teaching both grammar and spelling in a fun and enjoyable way are explored through sample lessons and demonstration of real classroom scenarios in the UK and in Argentina.

Please note: In this course there will not be any introduction to synthetic Phonics 1.

BIODATA:

Grace Vilar is a graduated English teacher who has 30 years of classroom experience. She is currently Head of Primary at Colegio San Antonio, a bilingual school in San Antonio de Areco, Buenos Aires.

She works part time as an Educational and Literacy Consultant offering advice and training to schools and teachers. She is a Jolly Phonics professional trainer for Latin America, providing training in synthetic phonics in English.

In 2006 she visited England invited by the Inspector of British Schools and Chairman of the English Speaking Union in Oxford, Geoffrey Goodall. She spent a month in Oxford where she visited several schools and worked at Rye St Antony School, where she observed lessons and helped deliver the curriculum. There, she gained experience in the best and latest teaching of reading and writing, through synthetic phonics, and learnt about Jolly Phonics.

Once in Argentina she implemented Jolly Phonics at her school training the whole school staff. As a result of the excellent results obtained with the implementation of the programme, she was offered to be a Jolly Phonics professional trainer.

In 2008 she was invited to visit the Jolly Phonics offices in Chigwell, UK where she gained more experience in the field. She also spent a month in Oxford where she visited schools and worked at Rye St Antony again improving her teaching practice and learning about the delivery of the UK national curriculum.
