WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW

Welcome Back

IN THIS ISSUE

FROM SUPERINTENDENT BARKER

On behalf of the SCM Board of School Trustees and our entire SCM team, it*s my

privilege to welcome you to the 2021-2022 school year! It is a great pleasure to

welcome both our returning families and those who are new to Mishawaka. All K-12

students* first day of school is August 11, 2021.

The start of each school year brings much excitement and perhaps even some

apprehension. Those feelings are made even stronger following this past school year

where we dealt with masks, contact tracing, quarantine, changing schedules, illness,

and loss. We cannot thank you enough for the way in which you trusted and worked

with us to make it a successful school year. Our students, families, teachers, and staff

did an amazing job under the circumstances.

Even though the virus is still very real in our community, we are thankfully in a much

better place as we start the new school year thanks to readily available vaccinations.

Having said that, we must remain vigilant and mitigate risks while balancing our

desires to live freely. As you know, our SCM Board of School Trustees approved our

plan to be mask optional for the start of the upcoming school year. While the St.

Joseph County Department of Health strongly recommends universal masking for

any unvaccinated individual while indoors, they did approve our plan for students,

families, and employees to make that choice for themselves.

I am honored, humbled, and excited to work with you and our incredible team of

educators, support staff, administrators, and school leaders. Like you, we all care

deeply about the success of each child. Our team works tirelessly to make our

schools a place where your children want to come each and every day to challenge

themselves, to socialize, and to achieve all that they can as learners. We are lucky

to have such a dedicated and caring staff whose priorities are all in the right places,

building positive relationships with each and every student and helping them to

achieve their full potential!

We are striving to provide the best possible education we can for each of your

children as we implement procedures to ensure the health and safety of the students,

our staff, and our families. It is my sincerest wish that we work together to ensure the

new school year provides exceptional learning, safety and well-being for everyone.

Welcome back!

SCHEDULE PICK每UP AND

WALK每THROUGH

JOHN YOUNG MIDDLE SCHOOL

We greatly encourage students and parents to attend early

schedule pick-up. This event gives students an opportunity

to find their classes and lockers and to have their device

repaired or new enrollments can receive a device. It is also

beneficial for students to practice their locker combinations

prior to the first day of school. School counselors will be

available to help answer questions regarding student

schedules. Schedules will only be available during these

two days. If you cannot make it, students will get their

schedules on the first day of school or get it in Skyward

(Skyward). Students must be

accompanied by a parent or legal guardian to pick-up

schedules early August 4 and 5, 2021. P.E. uniforms will be

available for purchase during Schedule Pick-Up days. The

cost of the uniform is $10.00 per set.

Elementary

Open Houses

We invite you to attend the open house at your

child*s school. This is a great opportunity to meet

their teacher(s), see their classroom, and help your

child feel confident for the first day of school.
