400 Maryland Avenue, SW Washington DC 2020210 April 2017The Honorable Betsy DeVos Secretary of EducationDear Madam Secretary,My names Hailey White and I attend McKinney North high school where I am in Mrs. Warfeilds first period class learning about education. While learning about education she mentions you a lot and all of your accomplishments and in this letter I will be telling you and about myself and an issue I wish to have resolved. I usually make fantastic grades, last quarter my lowest grade was an 88.43 which was bitter sweet because it is a fantastic grade to have as my lowest but I was only a couple points away from straight A’s. At my school, MNHS, I do feel like this school has a fair system for every student because teachers are constantly checking up on you and making sure you turned your assignments in and if you haven’t that you are aware your grade will suffer. My family is small compared to most only my sister, my dad, my mom and I it may be small but has enough love and support to fill a family of 27. My school has many great things to offer that I have been able to enjoy over the past three years. An issue that could be fixed in my opinion would be the amount of work we get during a period then being told what we do not finish is then homework. An average student goes to seven periods of school day, some students may have sports accounting for one of their periods. This can be very challenging for students because for every class they don’t finish their work they have homework that night and are expected to return the next day with everything finished. In example what if a history class assigns 20 pages of power notes, 35 vocabulary terms, a fryer model all in a 55 minute span but, they have to do the same for their biology class, English class they have an essay and in math they have 3 pages of equations. This can really weigh heavy on a student especially the ones that have jobs after school so they can help their parents or earn enough to pay for gas. In all honesty school can be really tough with constantly getting assignments thrown at you everyday and feeling defeated before you even walk in because you know that you can’t get all the work done in the 55 minute period so you work as viciously as possible but it’s still not enough to spare you from loads of homework in the night that follows. I would like to see a change in this problem but change to this would be very difficult so for now I will just work as hard as I can. While learning about education I learned a lot about you and your successful journey that lead you to where you are today. Not only are you successful but also your family making for a busy schedule in most peoples eye yet somehow you manage to make decisions everyday that impact not only me but every student in the united states for the better. Thank you for everything you do to make my education the best you can make it. Sincerely, Hailey White ................
