FBMC Bible StudyApril 15, 2020Church Theme: “20/20 Vision, “A Clearer Vision of who God is and the Plans He has for you.”The Gospel of John(Chapter 21)In our lesson today, we see some of the disciples decide to go fishing. If we recall the time Jesus first called the disciples, some of them were professional fishermen; fished for a living. Some believe that the disciples resorted back to their previous profession after the death and resurrection of Jesus instead of remaining focus to the ministry Jesus called them to. Let’s look at the first section of John 21 and look at Jesus refocusing His disciples back to their calling of being fishers of men. John 21: 1-6 (NLT)Later, Jesus appeared again to the disciples beside the Sea of Galilee. This is how it happened. 2?Several of the disciples were there—Simon Peter, Thomas (nicknamed the Twin), Nathanael from Cana in Galilee, the sons of Zebedee, and two other disciples. 3?Simon Peter said, “I’m going fishing.” “We’ll come, too,” they all said. So they went out in the boat, but they caught nothing all night. 4?At dawn Jesus was standing on the beach, but the disciples couldn’t see who he was. 5?He called out, “Fellows, have you caught any fish?” “No,” they replied. 6?Then he said, “Throw out your net on the right-hand side of the boat, and you’ll get some!” So they did, and they couldn’t haul in the net because there were so many fish in it.John does not give all the names but says that seven of the disciples were there; went fishing. As professional fishermen, to go out all night and not catch any fish was very disappointingQuestion, why do you think Jesus asked them if they caught any fish when He already knew they did not catch anything? They obeyed Jesus’ command by throwing the net on the right-hand side of the boat; even though they did not know it was Jesus giving the command from the shore.John 21: 7-8 (NLT)7?Then the disciple Jesus loved said to Peter, “It’s the Lord!” When Simon Peter heard that it was the Lord, he put on his tunic (for he had stripped for work), jumped into the water, and headed to shore. 8?The others stayed with the boat and pulled the loaded net to the shore, for they were only about a hundred yards from shore. Question, why do you think Peter jumped in the water when he heard it was Jesus on the shore? John 21: 9-14 (NLT)9?When they got there, they found breakfast waiting for them—fish cooking over a charcoal fire, and some bread. 10?“Bring some of the fish you’ve just caught,” Jesus said. 11?So Simon Peter went aboard and dragged the net to the shore. There were 153 large fish, and yet the net hadn’t torn. 12?“Now come and have some breakfast!” Jesus said. None of the disciples dared to ask him, “Who are you?” They knew it was the Lord. 13?Then Jesus served them the bread and the fish. 14?This was the third time Jesus had appeared to his disciples since he had been raised from the dead.Question, why do you think Jesus had breakfast for them when they arrived on shore?Question, why do you think Jesus asked the disciples to bring some of the fish they caught to add to the breakfast?Notice who served whom in verse 13…what does this say to you?00Summary: Most of the disciples scattered and left Jesus as He was being persecuted and ultimately killed on the Cross. Peter, the one Jesus called the Rock, not only left but denied ever knowing Christ. After the resurrection of Jesus and Him appearing to them, some of the disciples decide to return to their previous occupation; fishing. Perhaps their failure to stay committed to Jesus; scattering, leaving and denying Jesus when trouble came caused them to return to what they used to do instead of what Jesus called them to. Yet, here is Jesus, returning and reaching out to them to His commitment to His disciples. His appearance, love, fellowship, and hospitality to them showed He not only forgave them, but desired for them to still be His disciples and future leaders of His Church.
