Moses Listens to God in the Burning Bush (Exodus 2:11 – 4:31)

Main Point: We can encounter God anytime, anywhere.

Key Verse: "Come here. Listen to what the Lord your God is saying.” - Joshua 3:9b

Materials: Paper and pencil for each student

Personal Connection:

·       Say: Today we heard the really cool story of when God spoke to Moses in the burning bush on Mt. Sinai. I have a question for you. Why do you think God appeared to Moses on the side of that mountain that day? What was so special about that mountain? Listen for answers. I believe that God spoke to Moses on the side of that mountain because that’s where Moses was! God met Moses where Moses was – tending his sheep in the desert. Leader, have you ever had an encounter with God where you clearly knew He was speaking to you? Maybe not face to face or audibly, but a time where you clearly knew that He was speaking to your heart? If yes, please share this with your group.

Group Discussion and Hands on Application:

• Say: God spoke throughout the Old Testament and the New Testament. Ask: Can anyone name a person in the Bible to whom God spoke? Noah, Abraham, Isaac, Deborah, Samuel, Daniel, King Nebuchadnezzar, Mary and Joseph, Paul, and so many more! Say: God spoke to kings and shepherds, judges and servants, prophets and disciples wherever they were. He spoke to people young and old, male and female. Does God still speak to people today? Let’s open our Bibles and read the first sentence of Revelation 2:7. Ask a volunteer to read the verse allowed. Next, let’s turn to John 10:27. Ask a volunteer to read the verse allowed. Who is speaking in this verse? Jesus. Jesus speaks to those who trust in Him. When He speaks, we should recognize His voice and obey Him.

·       Pass out paper and pencils. Say: I want each of you to write down all the places that you spend time. Maybe it’s school, your bedroom, on the soccer field, your friend’s house, wherever. Give students a few minutes to make their lists. Then, go around the room and ask each child to read one of the places that he or she spends time. After each place is mentioned, ask: Can God speak to you… (on the soccer field, on the playground, etc)? YES He can!

·       Ask: How do you know when God is speaking to you? When God’s Spirit speaks to you, He will always speak complete truth (John 16:13); He will always encourage you (Acts 9:31), He will never discourage you (Deuteronomy 31:8). (For older children: When you hear discouraging words in your imagination, that is the voice of our enemy, the devil, who accuses us day and night. Revelation 12:10b) God’s Spirit will remind you of Bible truths that you know (John 14:26). Often, as in the case with Moses, God may tell you something that would not be your natural idea – but it will NEVER contradict, or go against, His written Word, the Bible (John 1:1).

If you have turned from your sin and trust in Jesus, God’s Holy Spirit lives inside of you. Listen for His voice, and don’t be surprised when He speaks to you!

Conversation with God (Prayer): Pray that your children will always have ears to listen for God’s voice. Pray that they will recognize God’s voice and obey Him. Fill in the prayer journal and close in prayer.
