at

Concordia College (4-5 MIAC/6-8)

January 19, 2005

Memorial Auditorium

Moorhead, MN

GAME TIME: 7:30 pm

SERIES: Hamline leads 73-48

SERIES STARTED: 1922

LAST YEAR: Last year Concordia swept the series. The Cobbers won by five in the first game played in St. Paul, and then pounded the Pipers by 40 in the return game in Moorhead. In the first game, Soren Nelson bombed away for 26 points as Concordia won 77-72. He went 7-for-9 from the floor, including 3-for-4 from 3-point range and a perfect 9-for-9 from the free throw line. As a team, the Cobbers shot 91.3%(21-for-23) from the free throw line. In the Moorhead massacre, Josh Downey poured in 32 points and the Cobbers won 87-47. The victory helped Concordia clinch an MIAC playoff berth.

SERIES HISTORY: Concordia has won the last 11 games in the series. The last time Hamline defeated the Cobbers was back on January 2, 1999. The 11-game string represents the longest winning streak for Concordia in the 82-year history between the two teams. The longest winning streak for Hamline is 20 games. The Pipers rattled off 20 straight wins from 1931 until 1950…the most points scored by a single team in a single game in the series is 108. Concordia posted 108 points in their 108-80 win in 1970…the largest margin of victory in the series is 46 points. Hamline bettered the Cobbers 83-37 in 1949.

THE INSIDE SCOOP

CONCORDIA (4-5 MIAC/6-8)

THE SUM OF ALL PARTS

Concordia enters tonight's game leading the MIAC in field goal percentage. That should not be surprising since the top two players in field goal percentage in the league sport maroon and gold and the Cobbers have three of the top eight in the conference. Luke Linz has overtaken teammate Jason Miller as the league's most accurate shooter. Linz is hitting on 68.4% of his shots, while Miller is close behind at 64.1%. Keith Eckhoff is the third member of the team to show up in the top ten. Eckhoff is eighth in the league with a 52.1% field goal clip.

AND THE PARTS ARE PRETTY GOOD

- Concordia junior Keith Eckhoff is currently leading the MIAC in scoring with a 22.3 points per game average. He is also first in 3-point field goal percentage (55.2%) and third in free throw percentage (78.9%). As of January 9, he was ranked fifth in the nation in 3-point percentage and 21st in overall scoring.

- Junior post player Jason Miller has picked up where he left off in the 2003-04 season. Last year Miller was second in the league in field goal percentage (58.3%). This season he is also second in the MIAC in that category with a 61.5% clip from the field.

THAT’S A DIRTY 30

Concordia has had a player score more than 30 points in a game on five separate occasions in 2004-05. Keith Eckhoff has scored 30+ points on four different occasions, while Soren Nelson scored a career-high 32 points against Bethel on Saturday.

YOU’RE KILLING ME SMALLS!

One of the Achilles heels for the Cobbers this season has been in the rebounding department. The Cobbers rank last in the league in rebounds per game and offensive rebounds. This category is a little deceiving though, because the Cobbers are second in the league in the number of rebounds their opponent hauls down. Looks like that when the Cobbers play, both teams make a lot of shots and there aren't many rebounds!!

THE INSIDE SCOOP

HAMLINE (3-6 MIAC/5-9)

YOU WIN SOME, YOU LOSE SOME

Hamline has taken the phrase you win some, you lose some to new heights this season. The Pipers are currently riding a nine-game stretch where they have alternated wins and losses. Recently, Hamline has posted quality wins over Augsburg and St. John's (two teams that beat Concordia) and has losses against MIAC basement dweller St. Mary's and at home against Bethel (two teams that Concordia beat). The loss against St. Mary's might be the hardest pill for first-year head coach Barry Wohler to swallow. The Cardinals were winless in MIAC play before they downed the Pipers 83-72 at Hamline.

HOME SWEET ROAD

To go along with their recent up-and-down trend, Hamline has taken to playing better on the road then they do at home. In the last seven games, Hamline is 1-3 at home and 2-1 on the road. Overall, the Pipers are 2-5 at home and 3-4 on the road.

BARRY BALL

Tonight's matchup marks the first time the first-year head coach Barry Wohler will make an appearance in "The Barn". Wohler's name is probably familiar to those who keep up with U of M sports. Wohler played basketball and baseball for the Gophers. He was a member of both the 1982 Big Ten championship basketball and baseball teams, but left the university to pursue a professional baseball career within the Los Angeles Dodgers organization.

SMOKE AND MIRRORS

After looking at Hamline's season statistics, the Gameday staff has one question: how have they won five games? The Pipers have only one player scoring in double figures and are last in the league in scoring defense. Hamline is allowing opponents to score 77.5 points per game. Offensively, the Pipers average only 71.8 points per game. In addition, they are dead last in 3-point field goal defense and ninth in the league in 3-point field goals made. One area that the team excels at is stealing the ball. Hamline leads the MIAC in steals, averaging 10.57 per game.

Cobber Men’s Basketball Coach

Duane Siverson

Duane Siverson has been the

Running Cobber men's

basketball head coach since

1991. He has a 313-211 career

coaching record, which makes

him the all-time winningest

basketball coach in school history.

In his 13 years as the Cobber men's head coach he has already put together three of the four winningest seasons in Cobber history. His 1994-95 team went 18-7 (matching the second best win total in school history).

Last year, the 2003-04 squad made the conference playoffs for the second time in the last four years. The team finished the year with an 18-8 overall mark and a 14-6 record in conference play. Both win totals were in the top five in school history. As a team, Concordia finished the '03-'04 campaign by being ranked in the top ten in Division III in field goal percentage, free throw percentage and 3-point field goal percentage - a first in Cobber men's basketball history.

He served as an assistant coach for the Running Cobbers from 1978-1984, during which time the Cobbers captured two MIAC titles. In 1984 Siverson took over as head coach of the Cobber women's program and guided them to four MIAC titles, the 1988 NCAA Division III National Championship and seven NCAA tournament appearances. He was NCAA Division III National Coach of the Year in 1988. He became head coach of the Running Cobber program in 1991.

Siverson was raised in Casselton, ND, and later moved to Spokane, WA, where he graduated from high school. He received his B.A. degree from Yankton College in 1978 and earned honors for both academic and athletic achievements.

He and his wife Bonnie, and their two sons, Tyler and Jordan, live in south Moorhead.

COBBER LAST GAME RECAP - Concordia 80 at St. Thomas 94

ST. PAUL-- It is becoming more and more commonplace for Cobber guard Keith Eckhoff to put on a shooting clinic from anywhere on the floor. The junior has meteorically risen to the top of the MIAC with his ability to hit jump shots from anywhere on the floor. Coming into the season, Eckhoff was averaging 11.6 points per game and had only scored more than 20 points in a single game on one occasion. So far in 2004-05, he is averaging 22.3 points per game and has compiled four games in which he has scored over 30 points.

The latest Eckhoff tutorial came on Monday night. The long-range gunner exploded for 36 points and was 9-of-11 from 3-point range. He finished the game by shooting 65.0% (13-of-20) from the floor and also added team-highs in assists (5) and rebounds (4). Despite Eckhoff's surgical touch from the outside, the Cobbers were unable to out-slug league-leading St. Thomas and fell 94-80.

The game was not decided until the final 12 minutes of play. Concordia was clinging to a 55-54 lead before the Tommies sprinted to an 8-0 run and seized control of the game from that point forward.

The loss drops Concordia's record to 4-5 in the MIAC and 6-8 overall. The Cobbers entered the day in a four-way tie for fourth place in the league. After the action in the league on Monday, Concordia now stands tied with Macalester for sixth place. St. Thomas finishes their first half of the MIAC season with a perfect 10-0 record. The Tommies have now won seven straight games and are 10-4 overall.

The other two Cobber players who broke into double figures in scoring were post players. Jason Miller finished the game with 15 points and four rebounds. Freshman Luke Linz tallied 12 points. Senior Soren Nelson, who scored 32 points in Concordia's victory over Bethel on Saturday, was limited to only 24 minutes of play due to foul trouble and finished the game with nine points.

St. Thomas had four players score in double figures, and was led by the unlikely scoring figure of reserve Bryan Schnettler. Schnettler came off the bench to torch the net for five, 3-point field goals and score a season-high 23 points. Rebounding machine Isaac Rosefelt recorded his ninth double-double of the season. He added 17 points and grabbed 12 rebounds.

The biggest statistical difference came in rebounds and turnovers. St. Thomas outrebounded Concordia by a 31-23 margin and committed only seven turnovers in the game. The Cobbers turned the ball over 15 times and the Tommies turned those 15 miscues into 23 points.

Hamline Men’s Basketball Coach

Barry Wohler

Barry Wohler enters his first

season as the head coach of

the Hamline men's basketball

program. From 1999-2004,

Wohler was the head boys'

basketball coach at Marshall High School in southwestern Minnesota. His team won the 2001 Southwest Conference championship and represented Section 2AAA in the state tournament.

He was Southwest All-Area Basketball Coach of the Year in both 2000 and 2001.

Wohler was a two-year letterwinner in both basketball and baseball at the University of Minnesota. He was a member of both the 1982 Big Ten championship basketball and baseball teams, but left the university to pursue a professional baseball career within the Los Angeles Dodgers organization.

Wohler played baseball for the Dodgers from 1983-88, where he was a member of the club's AAA affiliate. He then returned to St. Cloud State to finish a degree in physical education. Wohler graduated from St. Cloud State in 1989, after leading the Huskies men's basketball team to the 1986 and 1987 NCC championship. They also appeared in the 1987 Elite Eight.

Hamline Season Preview – (courtesy of Hamline SID)

When a first-year head coach comes into a program, the keyword for the transition is always ‘new’ – new attitude, new atmosphere, new system. The 2004-05 men’s basketball team is no different as they begin the first season of the Barry Wohler era.

Hamline will rely on a young group of returning guards along with some newcomers who will contribute immediately. At point guard, Wohler is high on transfer Sam Wiener (Marshall, Minn.). The sophomore comes in from Div. II Southwest Minnesota State where he started 13 games as a first-year, averaging 3.5 assists per game. Also fighting for playing time are junior Ryan Montgomery (Plainview, Minn.) and transfer Jesse Hendricks (Hutchinson, Minn.), who both can play point and shooting guard positions. First-year Nick Novak (Ladysmith, Wis.) will lend depth to the point guards.

When the Pipers play in the half court, Wohler will focus on getting the ball inside in order to open up outside shooters. On the front line, the Pipers return a big and experienced group. Senior forward Brandon Aukes (Kiester, Minn.) is the leading scorer back, averaging 8.0 points per game. The 6-5, 177-pounder also grabbed 4.5 rebounds per game. Hamline also returns 6-10 center Paul Muenchow (St. Anthony, Minn.), who tallied 5.3 ppg and 5.0 rpg.
