WHEREAS, the government of Syria is an authoritarian regime with intent on maintaining power at the expense of the well-being of its citizens, and2. WHEREAS, Syria is violating the human rights of its citizens, and3. WHEREAS, U.S. diplomacy has failed to reach peace in Syria, and4. WHEREAS, military intervention becomes necessary to prevent the civil war from extending into Lebanon,5. BE IT RESOLVED by the Student Congress here assembled that:6. The US government should unilaterally intervene with regular military troops into Syria.3) Bill for Alternative Energy1. BE IT ENACTED BY THE STUDENT CONGRESS HERE ASSEMBLED THAT:2. Section 1: The United States will phase out all subsidies to fossil fuel based energies, including (but not necessarily limited to) coal, natural gas, and oil.3. Section 2: The United States will provide subsidies, equivalent to those provided to the oil industry, to all approved alternative energy corporations.4. Section 3: The Department of Energy in accordance with the Environmental Protection Agency will determine the approval standards for subsidies given to alternative energy corporations.5. Section 4: All other contradictory laws shall be declared null and void.4) Bill to Repeal the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act 1. BE IT ENACTED BY THE STUDENT CONGRESS HERE ASSEMBLED THAT:2. Section 1: The Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act should be repealed.3. WHEREAS, the Iranian government is reported to continue to develop WMD's, and3. WHEREAS, the Iranian government continues to support terrorism forces in the Middle East and the civil war in Syria,4. BE IT RESOLVED by this Student Congress here assembled that:5. All economic sanctions against the Republic of Iran shall be reinstated.6) A Resolution to Ban “Fracking”1. WHEREAS, enhanced oil and gas drilling has potentially let to increased earthquake activity, and 2. WHEREAS, enhanced oil and gas drilling pollutes adjoining ground water, 3. BE IT RESOLVED by this Student Congress here assembled that:4. All enhanced oil and gas extraction in the United States be suspended for additional research on safety and efficacy.7) A Resolution to Legalize Recreational Marijuana1. WHEREAS, several states have legalized recreational marijuana, and2. WHEREAS, medical marijuana has been legalized in even more states, and 3. WHEREAS, differences in legal status creates enforcement problems, 4. BE IT RESOLVED by this Student Congress that 5. Recreational use and sale of marijuana be legalized by the US Federal Government in all fifty states.8) A Resolution to Eliminate the Penny as Currency1. WHEREAS, electronic purchasing is becoming more common, and2. WHEREAS, the penny uses resources that could be better spent elsewhere, and 3. WHEREAS, consumers rarely use small coins,4. BE IT RESOLVED by this Student Congress here assembled that:5. The United States Federal Government shall ban the penny.9) A Resolution to End the Privatization of California Prisons1. WHEREAS, the U.S. Department of Justice has announced it will begin phasing out its contracts with private prisons, and2. WHEREAS, more than 9,000 California state inmates are currently housed in private prisons, with the bulk of those imprisoned in Arizona and Mississippi, and3. WHEREAS, in addition to the two out-of-state prisons, California contracts with eight in-state prisons, and4. WHEREAS, California has no specific timeline for reducing the state’s contracts with private prisons,5. Therefore BE IT RESOLVED by the Student Congress here assembled that 6. The California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation begin phasing out its use of private prisons to be totally divested within three years of this resolution’s passage.10)??A Resolution to Designate Federal Election Day as a Public Holiday1. WHEREAS, to increase voter turnout, because increasing civic participation through voting is good for our democracy to indicate a national commitment to create a more vibrant democracy, and 2. WHEREAS nationwide, the total turnout for the 2014 elections was only 36.6%, according to the United States Elections Project at the University of Florida, making it the lowest voter turnout in more than 70 years; and3. WHEREAS in America, we should be doing everything possible to make it easier for people to participate in the political process;?and4. WHEREAS, we should not be satisfied with a “democracy” in which more than 60% of our citizens don’t vote and approximately 80% of young and low-income Americans fail to vote; therefore5. BE IT RESOLVED by the Student Congress here assembled that 6. Federal Election Day, the Tuesday after the first Monday in November in each even-numbered year, shall be a national holiday so that every citizen has the time and opportunity to vote. ................
