RVH RESEARCH BIOLOGY – PHOTOSYNTHESIS LABThis lab will consist of two parts. The lab notebook will be turned in with data collected for your experiment and a graph of the class data and the Photosynthesis Lab Report will be collected for analysis of the class data. 2-3 References are required for this lab. Listed in APA format. Information from the resources will be used in Student UnderstandingsThe lab will be performed in class and data will be collected to perform statistical analysis with the class data. The purpose of this lab will be to determine under what conditions the marine algae Nannochloropsis oculata have the highest rate of photosynthesis. Go to the following website and read the article: the article on the vision site on the Assessment of environmental stresses for enhanced microalgal biofuel production- an overview. Citation:?Cheng D and He Q (2014) Assessment of environmental stresses for enhanced microalgal biofuel production – an overview.?Front. Energy Res.?2:26. doi: 10.3389/fenrg.2014.00026Part 1: Algae Photosynthesis Lab in Research Notebook (50 points): due in class 1/17(B) and 1/18 (A)Photosynthesis Lab will be done in the Research notebook.Write the lab title and page numbers in the Table of Contents. Write the title of the lab, date and page # on the starting page in your lab research notebook.(Informative title) (The Relationship between (IV) and (DV))Research Model – done in classKey content and Student understandings- answer the following questions (use the articles for help) (reserve 2 pages)– Write the major concepts that each research experience will address. Write 1-2 sentences about why you think the lab is important to our understanding of science. This section provides you a place to record the “AHA!!’ moments as you conduct research. This section needs 3 references cited in APA format for where you obtained your information. Give an overview of the process of photosynthesis. Describe the general chemical components of photosynthesis and explain why each is critical to the process. Describe the following structures and function of Nannochloropsis oculata: Type of Cell (Prokaryotic/Eukaryotic)How they reproduceWhat is the make-up of their cell wallWhat pigment do they utilize to photosynthesize Why is this algae commonly used for biodiesel production?Explain three different conditions that can impact the rate of photosynthesis in Nannochloropsis oculata. Briefly explain how is the oil obtained from the algae (Nannochloropsis oculata) to make biofuels?Experimental Design:Research Question: What is the effect of the IV on the DV? Under what conditions would the marine algae Nannochloropsis oculata have the highest rate of photosynthesis?Null Hypothesis: The IV will not affect the DVAlternative Hypothesis 1: Alternative Hypothesis 2: Independent Variable (IV): Experimental groups: include all groups.? Be specific (not ‘room temperature’, but ‘21oC’) Control group: Dependent Variable (DV): what is being measured, how it is being measured, units Constants: Refer to your model for important constants. Materials and Procedures: paste in lab notebookPaste data table in notebook and fill in with your group’s data and the class data.Make a graph of the CLASS means in your notebook.Photosynthesis Lab Report (50 points): to be turned in to by 11:55 pm Jan 17th(Informative title) (The Relationship between (IV) and (DV))Nannochloropsis oculata Experimental Design:Research Question: What is the effect of the IV on the DV? Null Hypothesis: The IV will not affect the DVAlternative Hypothesis 1: Alternative Hypothesis 2: Independent Variable (IV): Experimental groups: include all groups.? Be specific (not ‘room temperature’, but ‘21oC’) Control group: Dependent Variable (DV): what is being measured, how it is being measured, units Constants: Refer to your model for important constants. Results: (include descriptive statistics table (class means and standard deviations) Graph of class data will go in your lab notebook.Add a statistical data table for the CLASS data:Data table needs (a) a descriptive title (title case), (b) headings, (c) means (Mean Oxygen produced (mg/mL), and (d) standard deviation (mg/mL). It should be neat. Use Word [Insert Table 3 rows and 5 columns (4 rows if you want to put the title inside the table)] Add an ANOVA:Single Factor table for the CLASS data. Add a descriptive title and paste the table from excel. In paragraph format, discuss the following: Make a claim: Write a statement that answers the research question (Does the IV affect the DV?). Summarize trends in the data. (Refer to central tendency and variation (standard deviation).Determine the p value for the data by performing an ANOVA test for the CLASS DATA. Restate the null hypothesis. Was the null hypothesis accepted or rejected?Check your work to make sure you did not use any personal pronouns or contractions. Be specific. Use scientific writing. Do not just make lists. Capitalize proper nouns. Do not capitalize common nouns.Discussion:In paragraph format, discuss the following: Restate the claim to focus the reader on the answer to the research question.Explain the scientific concepts behind the claim so that readers understand how the new information fits into current knowledge – This will be the main part of the discussion section – it will require at least one paragraph to explain the light-dependent reactions. Explain fully and be specific. Convince me that you know how photosynthesis workshow oxygen is made in photosynthesishow the IV affected the DVWhy does less light reduce Ps rate? Why was there less Ps under green light? Explain the negative values. Conclusions: Summarize everything and answer the research question - 3-4 sentences only. Refer back to the original research question involving maximizing oil production in N. oculata.Ps Algae lab – formal reportName ___________________Ps/CR LabPossibleEarnedTitle2? Research Q1?
