This course is designed to give insight into the science of living things. The emphasis is on the basic structural and physiological information of living organisms. A minimum number of laboratory experiments are required to be performed. Students will sit for the New York State Regents Examination in the Living Environment.

The following topics will be covered:

• Introduction to Science and the Living Environment

• Characteristics of Living Things

• Homeostasis and the Human Body

• Reproduction

• Genetics

• Evolution

• Ecology

Student Assessment:

|Homework |10% |

|Lab Average |20% |

|Quizzes |30% |

|Tests |40% |

Labs

• All lab reports must be completed according to the instructions.

• Late lab reports (2 days) will result in a 20 point deduction.

• All lab reports must be complete and handed in, even though they may be late and only worth 65%.

• If you did not hand in your labs, YOU WILL NOT BE ALLOWED TO TAKE THE REGENTS EXAM IN JUNE.

• If you are absent (legally) from class and miss a lab, it is YOUR responsibility to see me in order to make up the lab within one week of returning to class.

• Discussing the results and write-up with other members of your group is encouraged, copying reports is not permitted.

Test & Quizzes

• Quizzes will be given periodically during instruction.

• Tests are given at the end of each unit.

• A review class will be provided before the test.

• If you are absent (legally) on the day of the assessment, you will schedule a make-up assessment.

• If you miss the review class, you will take the test on the second day of your return.

Homework

• Homework is assigned and expected to be completed by the due date, which is usually the next day.

• Students are responsible for copying their assignments into their agendas.

• LATE OR INCOMPLETE HOMEWORK IS NOT ACCEPTED. NOT EVEN ONE DAY LATE.

• We will go over homework the following class.

Absences:

• Students are responsible for making up missed work and obtaining any missed material. Any work not made up within one week will result in a zero.

Extra Help:

• Extra help will be given on Thursdays before and after school, or by appointment if necessary.

Class Conduct:

• Read your student handbook discussing appropriate conduct in the classroom.

• Disrespect of your fellow students will not be tolerated.

• You are expected to be IN YOUR SEAT at the bell, not entering the classroom. If you are late 3 times, a referral will be sent to the dean’s office.

• If you are absent from class, you are required to have your excuse note in the attendance office within 2 days of the absence or it is considered a cut.
