Biotechnology Quarter Three Project

This designed to give students a better understanding of the process of bringing a biotechnological product to market. Students must develop a new product/process; research the possible demographics, design specifications, budgetary concerns, and marketing strategies. The final product will be a written paper and class presentation worth 20% of the 3rd quarter grade.

Biotech product development

There are many aspects to consider when you are taking a biotech product from the initial stages of design through testing and into the market place.

• Design

• Feasibility

• Legal issues

• Modeling and testing

• Quality

The original plan must be regularly updated as progress is made and markets or legal requirements change.

Design

The design process is a cyclic, ongoing, developmental process of generating ideas, testing these ideas and selecting the ideas that work best. This developmental cycle begins with a range of possibilities and general ideas (conceptual designs) and gradually reaches a point where particular and fine details of the final product (final specifications) have been decided. Product development often begins with producing a design brief.

Design Brief

A design brief, when the product or service is requested by a client, is developed in collaboration with the client to ensure that it will meet the client’s needs/wants. The minimum requirement for a design brief is that it states the product’s basic function, i.e. what it must do, and a cost/price target. Often, however, it will include more than this. A design brief establishes clear expectations between a business and the designer. A design brief template cannot be a ‘one size fits all’ because design projects vary so much, ranging from product innovation and improvement, to service delivery, software development and graphic design. Use this template as a starting point and modify as necessary. A comprehensive design brief might contain:

Business name: (Insert Business name here)

Introduction

A general description of the project development project and why it was chosen.

1. Specifications

These are specific requirements for your product that may be determined by the designer and the manufacturer. They may also be altered, augmented, or eliminated depending on the nature of the product, its design requirements, feasibility, and time/budgetary constraints.

i. evidence of actual or potential customer demand - finding out customer preferences, identifying gaps in the market, getting customer feedback, identifying any social or cultural issues that may be involved in the production and sale of your product

ii. indication of target user group - detailed description of the target market and marketing approach. Include details such as occupation, gender ratio, average age, nationality/location, psychological demographic, lifestyle preferences, advertising and promotional plans, distribution etc.

iii. basic performance requirements - To be able to provide a workable design, you need to know what the product is supposed to be able to do, who will be using it and in what circumstances.

iv. target costs and selling price - provide an idea of how much money you plan to spend and how much the product will cost. This enables the designer to be realistic when they provide options

v. advantages over existing and/or competing products - finding out about other similar products that are already available, their design, cost, strengths, weaknesses

vi. special features of the product – specifically what are the new or improved aspects of your product

vii. guidelines on appearance, style and image - aim to reflect the purpose of the design project in its title and packaging. If it’s in the public domain title may need to include branding

A template for a design brief is included on page 6 of this packet.

Feasibility

The feasibility of your product needs to be established before any further development is undertaken. You need to answer the following questions:

• Will it work?

• Can it be done in time?

• Can it be done within the budget?

• What about up-scaling? It may be possible to produce your product in small amounts or numbers, perhaps in a laboratory situation, but is it feasible to up-scale this process for mass production?

Modeling and testing

Ideas can be tested in a variety of ways ranging from thinking it through in your head or discussing it with others to building a full-scale prototype of the product or process. One of the most effective ways of testing ideas is by modeling.

Different types of models

Concept models

These are used in the early stages of design to experiment with a range of ideas. They are usually made quickly and inexpensively from paper, card, clay, or polystyrene foam and help to visualize the product in 3D.

Working model

A working model is used to test the function of all the parts of a design or to decide how working parts will fit together.

Prototype

A prototype is exactly the same as the finished product except that it is made by hand. A prototype is fully functional and is used to evaluate a product’s design before the decision is made to manufacture the product

Computer modeling

Computers are commonly used to display, explain and test intended solutions for product, system, and environmental designs. Computer-based models have many advantages. They:

• are often more accurate

• can be changed easily

• convert readily to working drawings

• can show internal components

• are easily manipulated in three dimensions

• can simulate a variety of materials

• can be used to calculate the required strength and shape of components

• can be output to peripheral equipment that creates actual components

• are often cheaper to produce than physical 3D models

• can be viewed and worked on simultaneously from a variety of locations

• are easily transported and displayed.

Marketing

Elements of a good product

• Backed up with strong R&D

• Good positioning

o Distinguishing feature(s)

• Well packaged

o Consistent logo & branding, identifiable

o Accessible to customers

o Attractively packaged

o Value is documented & communicated

• Well advertised

o Customer may need to see it advertised several times before really “seeing” it
