Travel and Camping on Public Lands

The San Luis Valley Public Lands Center is composed of Bureau of Land Management’s San Luis Resource Area and the Rio Grande National Forest. These two agencies manage 2.3 million acres of public lands and over 3,000 miles of motorized roads and trails in the Upper Rio Grande.

Following the guidelines below will help limit resource damage and ensure that everyone has an enjoyable experience while visiting lands managed by the San Luis Valley Public Lands Center.

Motorized Travel

1. Motorized vehicles are restricted to designated routes on lands managed by the Forest Service and Bureau of Land Management (BLM)

2. Motorized big game retrieval is allowed, but restricted to areas specified on the Rio Grande National Forest Motor Vehicle Use Map. Only all-terrain vehicles (ATVs) may be used to retrieve game between 12:00 p.m. and 5:00 p.m. ATVs must not exceed 50 inches in width and must have large tire surface area and less than 10 lbs of tire pressure. Game retrieval with ATVs must not damage soils and vegetation.

3. Free Motor Vehicle Use Maps may be obtained at any San Luis Valley Public Lands Center office or can be downloaded from the Rio Grande National Forest website on the Maps and Publications page at fs.riogrande.

4. The most current BLM travel maps may be downloaded from the San Luis Resource Area Travel Management Plan page at co/st/en/fo/slvplc.html.

5. You can help the Forest Service and Bureau of Land Management enforce travel regulations by reporting violations to any SLV Public Lands Center office. Please safely obtain as much information as possible, including what happened, when and where the violation occurred and a description of the vehicle(s).

1. Cross-country motorized use is allowed within 300 feet of BLM roads solely for the purpose of dispersed camping.

2. The Rio Grande National Forest Motor Vehicle Use Map highlights areas where cross-country motor vehicle use is allowed within 300 feet of roads solely for the purpose of dispersed camping.

• Dispose of waste properly.

• Be considerate of other campers.

4. Use only certified weed-free hay or pelletized feed for livestock on public lands.
